I've been waiting to find the right 1960 Thunderbird to make this image with for years. The car isn't especially rare, but the taillights are usually smashed or just gone before they make it to the salvage yard. This Big M rescue was complete! Socked in total darkness, lit with about 10 individual hits from the Protomachines flashlight.

'57 Caddy Fleetwood, melting into the grass at my favorite junkyard, 'round midnight. Green and cool white light from the Protomachine flashlight. Ig

I play in the dark underground in an old shelter, light painting with a Protomachines LED8

Old mining buildings. Lightpainting with a Protomachines Led8.

Testing my new toy, the Protomachine Led 8.

Never showed this warm-balanced purple variation to anyone. I dunno, sometimes you just want to sit on them for a while to see if it ages right. Yermo, California, August 2015. 192-seconds of full moon with purple-set Protomachines flashlight.

...in an abandoned underground shelter room.

Beneath the weird Big Valley sky, with full moon and Protomachines flashlight.

Testing my Protomachines Led8.

The towers of a ghost city on a distant planet . . . or a forest of steering columns at a junkyard in Fresno. What do you mean it can't be both? Red and green from the Protomachines flashlight during a 114-second exposure.

1956 Buick Special, parked in a warehouse for so long, not only did the tires go flat, they're crumbling to dust. Very close quarters, there is a shelf full of starters just out of view on the right, Night, total darkness with red, white, and blue light, from the Protomachines flashlight.

1950s Electrolux vacuum, on an abandoned farm in the Big Valley. No idea what to make of that horn made of spider web, it was like that when I got here. Camera placed on the floor in total darkness. With with the Protomachines flashlight.

Killer whale-colored junkyard '71 Thunderbird. Lit by the full moon and Protomachine flashlight.

Olds 98, one of last year's employee yard cars, now retired and stacked on a gutted Crew Cab, on a cold and wet evening at the junkyard. Night, with accumulated full moon and sodium vapor from nearby industrial complexes for 184 seconds, with a lot of Protomachine flashlight producing many colors from many directions.

Right rear door of a '54 Packard, mouldering at the junkyard. Funky in there, like it hadn't been opened in a very long time. 66 seconds of full moon with red, lime and white from the Protomachines flashlight.

The slow-moving tidal wave of sand from the dry Mojave River engulfs the houses on the north edge of Newberry Springs. Purple and green from the Protomachine flashlight during 2:17 of burned in ambient moonlight and the glow of Barstow in the distance.

Planted school bus. On special occasions it's filled with flammable materials and lit like a giant, mutant, olympic flame. Found at the International Car Forest of the Last Church, Goldfield, Nevada. 295-second exposure, lit with red and blue-set Protomachine flashlight. Ig

It’s hard not to feel so small wandering around these massive aircrafts.

(Night. 4 minute exposure. Landing gear lit with a Protomachines LED2 light.)

The moon rises over erosion patterns in Pliocene-era bentonite clay in a former lake bed in Cathedral Gorge State Park near Panaca, Nevada.

The eroded hills were partially lit by the moon, but also illuminated using a ProtoMachines LED2 light set to approximately the same color temperature as moonlight.

I still have a few images to post from The International Car Forest of the Last Church, this crazy-cool art project in the middle of Nevada that I shot last summer. That's the full moon rising into that afternoon's thunderheads. An hour later, all the clouds were gone. Composite of four 3-minute-ish exposures, lit with the Protomachine flashlight.

Marin Headlands, San Francisco, CA

Multi image blend. I shot one shot for the ambient lighting then individual shots for each of the rooms with red light from a Protomachine LED2 flashlight, then blended in Photoshop.

You know, like from Starship Troopers. 1970 Bonneville. Protomachines flashlight.

Northrop RF-5E Tigereye at Aviation Warehouse. August 2012. 253 seconds of full moon and Protomachines LED flashlight.

One of the face-planted school busses at the “International Car Forest of the Last Church” in Goldfield Nevada. Night, right after sunset, red and yellow Protomachine flashlight.

Marin Headlands, San Francisco, CA

This is a two image blend. I shot one for the ambient scene plus some light painting in front of the lookout station, then a second shot of the station's interior with blue light from a Protomachine LED2 flashlight.

Intense sodium vapor streetlights here, so I kept it short (35-seconds: short for me) and overpowered them with a cool-white-set Protomachines flashlight. That's the full moon masked by the light fixture.

1950s-vintage International Harvester Metro van, another yard ornament at Nelson, Nevada. Shot October 2021. 2:43 of full moon and Protomachines flashlight.

Airliner parts under the full moon, at Aviation Warehouse. Purple and red from the Protomachine flashlight, in 49 seconds.

The end of the once great Packard line, when they stopped making their own designs and turned into re-badged Studebakers. They did this for two years before shutting down completely in 1958. Night, 93-seconds in deep shade, lit with the Protomachines flashlight.

Post WWII British Riley RMA (RMB? I dunno), rotting away at the mosquito farm. Hosed by a sodium vapor lamp behind it, I had to put the camera very low to try and hide from its effects. I ended up with a glimpse of it backlighting that spider web, Bob Ross happy accident-style. 59-seconds of full moon with warm and cool white from the Protomachines flashlight. Have I said thanks for making that light lately George? Thanks!

One of the bug and guano-filled WWII-era barracks buildings at Eagle Field. Skimmed and scorched with a Protomachine flashlight.

The Love of the Road

I'm an air-conditioned gypsy. Mojave Desert, Nevada. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. This photo will most likely appear in my fourth history/night photography book I'm working on now. And this photo takes places at Nelson Ghost Town, where we are having a night photography workshop. Go to my website for details. Thank you.
