I illuminated this moss-covered fog-enshrouded vintage automobile with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light while the camera's shutter was open during this long exposure night photo. This was photographed while on a trip visiting my friend Lee in Atlanta and doing night photography with Tim while checking out locations for future night photography workshops. We photographed on a damp foggy December evening in Old Car City, filled with 4000 abandoned vintage vehicles in a forest dripping from rain earlier that evening.

The eroded hills were partially lit by the moon, but also illuminated using a ProtoMachines LED2 light set to approximately the same color temperature as moonlight.

The Church of the Blue Sky

Behold this breathtaking wooden church at twilight, perched atop a hill overlooking a valley that's nestled in the mountains at about 7400 feet in elevation in Nye County, Nevada. This 4/5 replica of a historic Catholic church, crafted with meticulous attention to detail, takes you back to the charm of the 19th century. But what truly brings the magic to life is the power of light painting! Armed with my trusty handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light, I illuminated the church's exterior with a warm white glow. Inside, I summoned hues of yellow to illuminate the sacred space, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. And that's a beautiful thing since it was just a few degrees above freezing on this gorgeous May evening.

1960 Plymouth Fury at Big M at the end of a long night of shooting. 110-seconds of full moon, and splashed with color from the Protomachine flashlight.

I caught last week's celestial event, the alignment of Jupiter and Venus in the western night sky, seen as a width-changing star trail along the right edge of the frame. No, the fisheye is not the ideal lens for capturing celestial events. It is, however, the ideal lens for capturing bitchen junkyard cars, like this '61 Imperial. 3 colors from the Protomachine light and the full moon, 120-seconds.

Mixing red and blue light on the cracked earth surface of a dry lake bed. I bought a ProtoMachines LED2 light for the night photography workshops I lead in the Wild West ghost town of Bodie, so I've been testing it both with colors and with cool to warm temperatures of white.

There's something special about this long red bus that I really like. The curves and lines are beautiful. I illuminated the vintage bus with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. Photographed during a night photography workshop that we taught in the Nevada desert.

Lost In Space

Mobius Arch, Alabama Hills, CA, framing the awe-inspiring Milky Way. I photographed this right after photographing the Manzanar Camp. Perhaps because of that, I don't know, I decided to illuminate just the edges of Mobius Arch, keeping much of it dark as well. Regardless, it's a moody, mysterious image. I illuminated the arch with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.

Caught Between The Moon and Yucca Valley (9405)

The moon behind a silhouette of a Joshua Tree in beautiful Joshua Tree National Park, CA on a perfect night in mid-June. I met my friend Dave for dinner and then drove out to this picturesque area of the Park for the beginning of my photog adventure in this area. To the right of this photo was a strange humming sound, and as I walked closer, I realized that it was a giant bee hive. That area could wait for another time to explore. Time to walk to a different area and photograph! I liked the way the moon appeared to nestle between the branches of this Joshua Tree, and the stars this evening were magnificent, shimmering on that way that stars shimmer only in the desert night sky.

Important news on the progress on my upcoming book "Boneyard". The schedule has been moved up: it will be published in July. My manuscript has been approved with virtually no changes—so happy they kept all my goofy alliteration, cryptic references and swear words. I should have a cover image and a preorder date soon. So far so good!

This image, "Stagecraft", was originally in the e-book version of Boneyard, but was cut from the print edition. I knew they were gonna have trouble reproducing these gamut-smashing purples and blues using the CMYK process, so I left it out. Never shown this one online before.
