Night photo in the Mojave Desert with a very old school schoolbus that seems straight out of Mad Max or Wasteland Weekend. I lit the bus with warm white and blue light from several different angles with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. This was with a night photography trip with George Loo, Tim Little, and Steve McIntyre, exploring the abandoned areas in the desert.

The Gold Eye and the Heavens Above (6322)

You know you are somewhere quiet and remote when you are keenly aware of that barely perceptible "hum" and are conscious of how well you can hear your breathing. Silence is louder and the stars shine brighter. This is Ojo Oro Arch, a hidden gem located in a secret corner of the Mojave Desert, not a strange new world from "Star Trek" but almost as far. Bodhi Smith, Chip Morton and I hiked several miles and hung out during this night photography trip. When I finally settled down to sleep under the stars around 3:30 am cocooned by a canopy of stars and the Milky Way arching directly overhead. Every several minutes, I saw shooting stars streaking through the night sky. Much thanks to Bodhi for inviting me on this fantastic trip. I illuminated the rocky arch with warm white light and red light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. Thank you very much for looking!

A vintage motel sign points the way to a warmly lit room and the eternal celestial movements of our night sky beyond. Speaking of light, I illuminated the scene with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light while the camera's shutter was open during this long exposure night photo. This was on a trip with night photographer Tony Donofrio and George the monkey for a short November trip.

A musical night winterland holiday scene, Mojave style, located in El Dorado Canyon in Nevada, with a rather weathered piano for accompaniment. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. An utterly forgotten mid-'70s Ford, the Elite was in the line for only 2 years, as sort of a downmarket Torino, or Mercury Cougar. In '77 this body-style became the Thunderbird. Yeah, nice face under the hood, didn't even notice it until I got home. Night, 3-minutes of full moon, with direct red, snooted blue and reflected purple and blue light from the Protomachines flashlight.

I was on vacation in Mammoth Lakes with my girlfriend, but snuck off for some night photography one evening, heading over to Mono Lake to photograph their otherworldly tufas. When some guys go out for the evening without their girlfriend, they might hit a bar; I grab my camera and go outside in the starlight. I've always been a bit strange. Anyway, I felt really creative this evening, having a lot of fun illuminating the tufas with a warm white light from my ProtoMachines LED2 while the shutter of my tripod-mounted camera remained open for the exposure. I was thankful for a beautiful night, not too windy, but serene and gorgeous, and here, I could easily see the Milky Way arching completely overhead, something that always fills me with awe. This was the last photo of the evening, something I saved for last because I wanted the Milky Way to seem like it was emanating from the tallest tufa in this grouping.

Ruins of a hotel built after a mining company built a smelter and the post office being established in 1907. The town was abandoned after 1919 with most of town being demolished by 1930.

I don't know if you have ever seen a UFO? Unfortunately, this is about as close as I've gotten recently. No abduction or alien probe, thankfully This is a night photo with light painting on a cold winter evening in the Arizona desert. Inside the farm-fresh '51 Plymouth Cranbrook at Big M last full moon. In total darkness before the moon rose, mint, purple and warm white from the Protomachines flashlight, in 69-seconds.
Yesterday's '53 Kaiser Manhattan. I loved the faded sticker, dew, moss and rust back here, so much texture and detail to sink my teeth into. Yes, complete and restorable . . . but it'd be a gigantic undertaking. 37 seconds, no chance for the full moon to burn in. Protomachines flashlight, purple bounced off the ground, warm white straight down and also backlighting the crazed taillight lens.

I Followed The Lights To the Mojave Barn (4904)

Near the top of a rise is an immense barn, rising up out of the Mojave Desert amidst the Joshua Trees and the pines, where the stars shine more brightly. And sometimes, if you are a night photographer and you ask really nicely, you could enter the barn and shoot light out from every crack. I was such a night photographer. Dusty but grinning from ear to ear, I walked through the cavernous two-story structure, throwing out warm beams of light with my faithful ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device while my camera faced the barn and registered all 195 seconds of the exposure in this resultant image.

While I was down in the Mojave holding a secret alumni workshop this weekend, I learned that the long abandoned gas station at the North Edwards exit, on highway 58 is gone. When I stopped here to do a couple of set ups, in the middle of the night, last June, the back wall was partially collapsed, and it was obvious it was on it's way out. I've lost count of how many times I've night shot here (I recently found some from 1999–with pumps still on the islands–a post for another day). And how many other roadside night photographers have shot here? All of you, I think. There must 10,000 artsy-fartsy daylight pics of it floating around on the web too. This iconic tin shed was a touchstone for me, and every other frequent driver of the Bakersfield to Barstow run. Gonna miss this one. About 3 AM, lit with the Protomachines flashlight.

You didn't think I'd pass up an opportunity to shoot ol' GM once more, did you? Three of us made the trip up from Barstow to meet up with one of my favorite photographers and descend upon the place where my night photography adventures really started. We shot here for nearly seven hours. Every time I looked at my watch, another hour had ticked by despite feeling like just a few minutes. Guess that's what happens when you really get in the groove. This was the most productive and fun night I had had there in years. This was also the first time I had shot there with something other than clear skies and I really liked what I was getting. This is a three minute shot. The bus was lit with a Protomachine LED 2. We wrapped up around 2:00, dropped off someone at a local motel and then made the two hour drive back to our basecamp. www.capenightphotography.com

Avon Court opened in Afton Oklahoma in 1936 with seven units. Each with a covered carport. It was operated by W.R. Trebilcock between 1951 and 1955. Harry Glover ran it until 1958.

Another cold but beautiful winter night near Joshua Tree National Park, having fun with a fisheye lens I had just purchased while photographing this water tower. Instant fun. Instant creativity. This is a long exposure photo. I love how a single image can show the passage of time (50 minutes here), showing time in a way that we cannot ordinarily perceive. 77% waxing moon. I illuminated the foreground from multiple angles with a handheld flashlight while the tripod-mounted camera held its shutter open.

Taking advantage of a little sodium vapor bounce from that PG&E light that never turns off at Eagle Field, the night before the workshop started. Loved them shadows, so I filled them with a little purple light from the Protomachine and let it burn in for 268 seconds. It's a Lockheed Harpoon, a Ventura variant used for patrol in WWII.

Did you ever have your parents wish really hard that you would follow in their footsteps? This is part of an abandoned cattle farm, something the kids did not want to continue. This was photographed near a full winter moon, one of my favorite times for night photography. I love it nice and cool with a longer night for photography. I lit the small cottage with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. Ruins of a gas station formerly owned by a man named Ed Young. In the late 1920's during prohibition he discovered he could make more money selling moonshine than gas, so he sold a lot of moonshine.

A late evening scene of two buses angling in at a distant mill. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening, a great success. Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. I illuminated the interior of the two buses with warm white and green light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure.

I believe both school buses were built in the 1930s, although I don't know this for a fact. That's all the information I have on these other than to say that they would probably make a cool RV conversion. Then again, remember, I'm a person who thinks that maybe I should convert either the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile or a large taco truck into an RV, so take it for what it's worth.

Cabooses were once commonplace at the back ends of freight trains. The conductor could watch for trouble from the cupola on top, while the crew could eat or rest in the accommodations below. Starting with deregulation in the late 1980's cabooses were phased out in favor of the FRED (flashing rear end device).

Night time at the abandoned Dixie Inn, a surprisingly tiny former restaurant located in Hinckley, CA (PG&E and Erin Brockovich infamy). I illuminated the night scene with warm white and Teal (GST-TM) light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than typing key prompts for AI-generated art.
