Abandoned on the outskirts of Mojave, CA. This was done shortly after dark, so there’s still some vestiges of weirdly warm ambient light infusing the scene, mixed with the rising full moon. California City glows, just over the horizon. Lit with the Protomachines flashlight.

Post Apocolyptic Bombay Beach, left on the beach after the annual Art Festival in April. Using light from the moon, Luxli and Protomachine to light the scene.
Early 1960s Spartan Royal Manor trailer, left in a shady spot near the flight line, at the abandoned NASA Crows Landing airfield. Now gone, fate unknown. 211-seconds, dappled full moon light, red and blue-set Protomachine flashlight. Unpleasant in there.

Lit with 2 colors from one spot: from inside the building, behind the slim wall between the door and window. I bounced red off the floor and ceiling to give the room some ambient glow, and purple out the door onto the melted '56 Chevy. Protomachines flashlight. Ig
1971 Dodge Coronet with the three-pointed Fratzog logo, randomly named by the designer because his boss told him it had to have a name. It took a minute-thirty to snoot the headlights with white, skim the hood and pop the logo with green and then bounce some purple in from underneath from that fancy Protomachines flashlight. Full moon too.
Remains one of two bunkers at a long abandoned naval air station at the salton sea. The bunker and much of the base is being overtaken by the drifting sand.

Some things are more famous in death than in life. I suspect nobody ever gave this boat a second look back in the days when it was working the waters outside the bay, but in its current home on the sand bar it serves as the local town's primary attraction. Curious tourist and photographer alike were left wondering how it came to be.

Junk section of portable building, going trapezoidal in the endless wind, the Mojave airliner boneyard in the distance. About 25 minutes of star trails, lit by the protomachines flashlight and full moon.
End of a couple of duplex units in a small duplex housing development. Located in Picher Oklahoma they entire town became nearly a ghost town after the government declared it a hazardous place to live due to the local mining causing the ground water to became toxic..and then a tornado hit and nearly everyone who was still there left. It is now a superfund site with only a few residents remaininng.

One of the few remaining buildings at what was once known as Ella's Frontier Trading post. The trading post was first established in 1927 and by 1947 it was owned by Ray & Ella Hubbell and was know as The Last Frontier Trading post. In 1955 Ella became the sole owner after she and her husband divorced which the name then became Ella's Frontier.

The old Clark Inn Motel sign pointing the way in Nelson in the Nevada desert. I illuminated the scene with warm white and red light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light while the camera's shutter was open during this long exposure night photo.This was on a trip with night photographer Tony Donofrio and George the monkey for a short November trip. Inside the blast-proof bunker at the abandoned mountain-top radar base. I came in here specifically to dodge the torrential rainstorm that stalled on the peak for part of the night. Bad air in here. Dusty, stale. This claustrophobic space was was dark as dark gets, lit with Protomachines flashlight.

Years go, when desert drives took much longer, this car braved the dirt roads of the Mojave, and now has come to rest among the cholla in the Mojave Desert. I lit the vintage car with warm white and blue light from a ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device from numerous angles while taking great care around the cactus. This photo was created during a night photography trip with George Loo, Tim Little, and Steve McIntyre, exploring the abandoned areas in the desert.

An eerie glow caught my eye as I shuffled through the darkness. I wondered how this light fixture miles from the nearest power source managed to stay lit.
When I finally reached its base, I noticed someone had hidden tiny a solar panel atop the post and snaked a garden LED into the salt crusted lamp shade. Hats off to the individual who thought of this.

Creative parking from a pilot? Nelson Ghost Town, with an airplane tail pointing the way to the midnight moon. I illuminated the scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. Photographed during a night photography workshop that we taught in the Nevada desert. The title is one of my punny puns, as this reminds me of a sundial, but also, "mundial" is "world" in Spanish, so there's that. Fun with words. This will appear in my fourth book of night photography, history, and experiences.

747 and 737 wreckage at Aviation Warehouse, 2 two-page spread in the "Boneyard" book, but never online before. EXIF notes say: 7/31/2012 12:23 am. 280 seconds, under full moon, broken by summer monsoon clouds. Lit with the Protomachine flashlight using red, lime and warm white settings.
Feeling crappy with allergies or a sinus infection, or some such misery, so I blew off the road trip I had planned for this months full moon. But I did manage to drag my ass out for a night at Big M. I can't stay away from this place. There's always a farm-fresh barn find, or some old treasure uncovered as cars move around . . . like this ragged 1960 Plymouth Fury, looking ready to roar down some haunted highway, a direct descendant of the mythic Furies, out for blood and vengeance. Loving the enhanced aggression in the splayed distortion that comes from pressing the frame's corners. Almost total darkness with Protomachines flashlight in 1:54.
