Rivets and Curves (7480)

~~~~~
A night fisheye photo accentuating the curves of the front of this rare vintage bus. I snuck in a quick visit just before Thanksgiving Day, photographing for two nights in a row in the California desert near the Mexican border. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening, a great success. Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. I illuminated the scene with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure.
This is a rare 1930 Nite Coach made by Pickwick. The transport industry was then regulated by the railroads, stipulating how buses would be built. This one was built from aviation aluminum and was designed as a touring bus. The lower half had beds, bathrooms, and showers. The upper half was for sitting and dining. While this sounds elegant, apparently they were not too popular since they were smoky and noisy. Thanks for looking.
Can't tell you how good it was to get out last week and do some urbex shooting after an almost two-year layoff (between my shoulder surgery rehab and the pandemic). I was taken (via cross country 4x4 ride) to an abandoned prison deep in the woods, surprisingly close to my home. A wonderfully overgrown and decrepit sixties complex, complete with A-frame structures. It was refreshingly free of heavy vandalism and tagging, probably due to the difficult access. We could hear animals, large ones, breathing and rustling in the bushes around us. This was my last shot of the night, but it's of the entrance gate, so it feels like a good lead off image. 1:16 under a foggy full moon, with red, white and blue from the Protomachines flashlight.
Sierra Stars (0839)
~~~~~

Lake George, up in the snowy Eastern Sierras. So many people miss the amazing night sky. I am thankful for the opportunity to have a few friends who are willing to share in adventures and experience new places, escaping from some of the struggles life throws at us for a short while. Going to the Sierras and hiking, kayaking, biking, and slowing down and connecting with the night sky is a luxury. Many cannot do these things, and I never take it for granted. In our fast-paced world, we rarely have a chance to see the stars drift across the sky. This beautiful location is located in Mammoth Lakes, Eastern Sierras, California, with Crystal Crag in the distance, and the inspiring Milky Way overhead.

Aware of The Night

~~~~~
I always find myself wondering who lived here and why they left. Stars streak overhead on a quiet night at a very remote abandoned cinder mining camp in the Mojave Desert. The mine is located near one of the numerous cinder cones in the region, the result of ancient black basalt lava flows. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device, illuminating everything during the exposure. I hadn't had a flat tire in many years. However, some of the very rough roads brought that long streak to an end around midnight. That aside, it was a beautiful quiet night for photography.
Castles Made of Sand
~~~~~

Long exposure night photo of a house hopelessly buried in sand somewhere north of Route 66, our Mojave version of Kolmanskop. This is a result of a combination of nature taking the earth back coupled with some foolish actions that led to more sand drifts than nature intended. This was considerably more buried in sand than last time I visited a couple of years ago. And it had been burned, something that put me in a rather bad mood when I first saw it. Regardless, I can't help but wonder about who lived here, and how helpless they must have felt from the onslaught of drifting sand. I lit the scene with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. Thanks.

From Days Distant (4083)

A night photo of what felt like ancient ruins hundreds of years old. But no, this was decades old, not hundreds. This is the "interior" of an abandoned structure near a former zoo in Two Guns, Arizona. I lit the structure from several different angles with a handheld ProtoMachines light painting device during the exposure. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip a day before meeting up with Mike Cooper, Tim Little, and George Loo.

This prewar Chevrolet pick up is crammed into the crowded Northwest corner of Paul’s Junkyard. Many workshop students have struggled with shooting this truck, so I wanted to give it a try. Its cut in half, just behind the cab, so it sits with its nose pointed in the air. I got down very low to accentuate this strange angle, setting the camera on some metal debris laying just in front of the bumper, with the lens pointed up, nearly vertical. This was my first shot of the evening: with the still low moon hidden just behind the peaked hood, I had only a few minutes before the rising moon flared into the shot. Protomachine flashlight: turquoise behind both tires, snooted warm white on the headlights, and pink, straight down on the hood. This battered old truck is pretty scarred up and ugly in the light of day, so I kept it mostly dark to read as shapes instead of details.

I don't know what circumstances exactly may have led to this bus being buried in sand, but it seems to be nature taking the earth back coupled with some foolish decisions that led to even more sand drifts than nature intended. This is one of the first photos I created with my new camera, a Pentax K-1, which was a joy to use. I've been using Nikons for many years, so finding the controls and everything else was a bit of an adjustment. I photographed up and down Route 66 at night, using Barstow as a home base. I used a warm light from a ProtoMachines LED2 to light the interior of the bus and some of the sand outside as well.

Last Stop of the Rio Grande (1822)

~~~~~
Night photo showing the movement of the stars in this long exposure photo. As a small child, one of the first words I liked to say was "choo choo train". I loved trains so much as a four year old, my grandmother used to take me to the rail yard in Skokie, Illinois to watch the trains come in. Having the opportunity to photograph them at night feels so special to me. This is a view of the night stars streaking over a 1920s Rio Grande dinner car which had an air conditioning unit with an ice system. Built by American Car and Foundry for The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1927, the "Castle Peak" was one of four cars built concurrently, named for famous "Peaks" along the route of the D&RGW. This car was used until the late 1960s, and has been resting under the stars of the Mojave for decades. Back in the distance is a Union Pacific railcar. I lit the dinner car with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure, while the light of the car in the distance were already on. Also, I know that some of you know where this is, but I was asked not to reveal the location because they don't want too much publicity. Thanks for your respect and kindness. This might appear in my second book of night photography images, which the publisher hopes to release later this year.
Building that housed mens and womens bathrooms at a former mineral spa. The nearby artesian wells and bubbling mud pots making this a spa to the stars were complicated by the floods of '76 and '77. The nearly full moon illuminating the strange, stark desert landscape in Devil's Garden, Staircase-Escalante, Utah. Illuminated with a handheld flashlight from several angles while the tripod-mounted camera was doing a long exposure, which also shows the celestial movements of the stars over 45 minutes. I love how a single image can show the long passage of time in a way that we cannot perceive when we are there. Devil's Garden involved a 12-mile drive down a dirt road from the town of Escalante. Kelso
~~~~~

Night falls around the historic post office and historic L. J. Packard Store of Kelso, a remote railroad town. Kelso had a reliable water source from Providence Mountains, and provided water for steam locomotives. Kelso also had extra "helper engines" that would help trains make it up the grade that came after. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. The Federal Six (2766)

~~~~~
Night time light painting allows me to highlight some of the beautiful details of vintage vehicles. This 1929 Federal school bus was no exception! This busused for the processing of honey, the owner removing the seats and glass windows and installing screens over the window openings to keep the bees out. The owner installed a centrifuge, honey heater, and containers to can the honey inside. The bus was made by the Federal Truck Company and has a 72-horsepower six-cylinder flathead engine with seven main bearings and was considered a rugged engine for its time. I lit the front of the bus with a ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. This may appear in my second book of night photography that I am working on now.
