The Green Haunting
~~~~~
Night trains pass behind the eerie abandoned Pendergast Hotel in Ludlow, CA. You can actually see the train through the front door. I had visited this house on the way to Amboy Crater in the Mojave Desert a few years ago before I began doing night photography, and thought I would revisit this at night. I illuminated the exterior with a warm white light, and the interior with blue light from various angles using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device while the camera's shutter was open. This photo will appear in my third book, this one about abandoned Route 66 night photography, history, and stories.
Oh Oh Oh Oh Riley (7521)
~~~~~
I've really liked this 1954 Riley for a while, but never photographed the front until this evening. I met friends Ivan, Tami, and Tyler at an old decommissioned WWII airfield. I ended up staying until 4:30 am catching up with Tyler before driving back while guzzling Monster energy drinks and listening to metal and Lakers podcasts. I illuminated the scene with a handheld Protomachines LED2 during the exposure.

The Ghosts of Boondocking Past
~~~~~
Night photo near an old abandoned general store in Goffs CA, one of several ghost towns along a lonely stretch of Route 66 in the California desert. Goffs was an old mining and railroad town until, as with many other towns, evaporated when Interstate 40 took the travelers away, bypassing the town. Today, there are several residents and an excellent cultural center in town who keep the history and the town alive. You can regularly hear trains rumbling past.
This is one of the first photos I created with my new camera, a Pentax K-1, which was a joy to use. I've been using Nikons for many years, so finding the controls and everything else was a bit of an adjustment. I photographed up and down Route 66 at night, using Barstow as a home base. While taking this night photo, I illuminated the RV with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure.
The Gold Eye and the Heavens Above (6322)
~~~~~
You know you are somewhere quiet and remote when you are keenly aware of that barely perceptible "hum" and are conscious of how well you can hear your breathing. Silence is louder and the stars shine brighter. This is Ojo Oro Arch, a hidden gem located in a secret corner of the Mojave Desert, not a strange new world from "Star Trek" but almost as far. Bodhi Smith, Chip Morton and I hiked several miles and hung out during this night photography trip. When I finally settled down to sleep under the stars around 3:30 am cocooned by a canopy of stars and the Milky Way arching directly overhead. Every several minutes, I saw shooting stars streaking through the night sky. Much thanks to Bodhi for inviting me on this fantastic trip. I illuminated the rocky arch with warm white light and red light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. Thank you very much for looking!

What appears to be a terminal or control tower and windsock at a airfield that was established after WWII. The airfield does not appear on 1945 maps but does appear in 1946 maps. Aerial photograph taken in the 50s shows this building a T-shaped hanger and 2 unpaved landing strips.

Here's another favorite from one of those broiling hot summer nights in 2012 at Aviation Warehouse. Never online before, but in the "Boneyard" book. Broken airliner landing gear tower over the endlessly shifting dunes. 25-minutes total exposure (in several stacked images) with blue and pink from the Protomachines flashlight, and then layered together in Photoshop.
The Mamie S. Barrett was built as a towboat at the Howard Shipyard in Jefferson, Indiana for the Barrett line. She is 146 feet long and 30 feet wide.
She was sold to the Army Corp of Engineers in 1923 and sent to Florence, Alabama in 1935 and used as an inspection boat.
In 1942, she would serve as headquarters for President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In 1947, the Mamie S. Barrett was sold to Volman Brothers Construction company and later sold to Spencer Merrills as a clubhouse and restaurant for the Harbor Point Yacht club of Weston Alton, Missouri.
In 1981, she was sold to Dick Oberle and moved to Eddyville, Kentucky, restored and served as a restaurant on the Cumberland River. In 1983 the boat was added to the National Historic Registry. Just a few years later, in 1987 the Mamie S. Barret was purchased by John and Mary Houseman and brought to Vicksburg, Mississippi and converted to a showboat complete with a 120 person theater on the main deck and a restaurant on the second deck. These mark the last of the Glory Days of the Mamie S. Barrett. She was purchased in 1990 to use as a casino but this plan never materialized. The Mississippi River flood of 1993 landed the boat on dry land pretty much right where it now sits.
Night, near full moon, 300 second exposure, protomachines flashlight set to gold, aquamarine and a shot of white.
UPDATE: May of 2017 the boat caught on fire, some of it remains but the upper portion of the boat was badly damaged.

Beware of the Dog
~~~~~
Eerie night photo on the remains of the property of a house along historic Route 66 that was destroyed in a fire a week before I arrived, the same day that the Goffs General Store was also burned, both under suspicious circumstances. The home had long been abandoned prior to the fire, so not to worry, there was no dog here. I had special permission to photograph this property. Illuminated by a full moon and warm white and red light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2. This will likely appear in a book that I am working on now. Thanks.
The Dam Keeper's House and the Stars Above (2567)
~~~~~
After a fun day of kayaking, I photographed the Milky Way as the moon rose over Big Bear, and then quickly drove over to the Dam Keeper's House. This was built using hand-cut granite blocks in 1890, using the same quarry for the rocks as the dam. This dam, built in 1884, regulated mountain water for citrus farmers in Redlands. The house was comfortable and had the first phone in Big Bear. Dam keepers and their families lived here, keeping an eye on the dam, until 1977. This included local Big Bear legend Bill Knickerbocker, the "Paul Bunyan" of the region, who cut the large timber beams for the house. A larger-than-life man, he chopped down a large tree, whose stump five feet across can be seen in the local museum. And he did this when he was over 80 years old. I also want to mention that despite the fact that we were up here for our one-year anniversary, my wife insisted that I run out and take a photo of the observatory anyway. She figured she was going to sleep anyway, and besides, she knows that night photography is like breathing to me. All the same, I made sure I woke up reasonably early so I wouldn't ruin our day. As usual, I lit the house with my trusty handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. By this time, the half moon had been out for quite some time, but I still managed to get a very faint Milky Way nonetheless in this single exposure.

While compiling images for the next book, on SoCal car junkyards, I keep running across images that I've forgotten about and never posted online before. This is the prop 1960 Imperial Ghia-bodied limousine, an original body and custom interior on casters, from the movie "Lemony Snicket" in storage at Pauls. Shot in 2013, it's since been returned to the prop company and is warehoused in LA. 96 seconds of full moon with blue and red Protomachines flashlight.
Under The Snow Moon Sky (5941)
~~~~~
There's such a beauty, however faded, in these vintage vehicles. An old Chevrolet flatbed soaks up the winter moon. This was photographed at a decommissioned WWII airfield in California. Interior illuminated with a red light, exterior with a warm white light from the ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device on a chilly night in February. American Natives sometimes referred to the February full moon as the snow moon, and while we were missing snow in this area, it still seems fitting. Maybe, we will sneak this into my second book of night photography, which I hope to finish by fall.
A 4 hole outhouse at the original location of 2 Guns tourist trap/gas station along route 66. The stone & wood outhouse had 2 doors and 4 holes but must not have had much of a wall in the center as there did not seem to be much of any signs of a divider still intact.
Night photo of a beautiful if rusty old Packard. A prospector from nearby Cadiz didn't have much money, so he ate dog food so that he could purchase this gorgeous 1948 Packard brand new. Fullerene Sphere (7626)
While exploring at night, I found myself wondering why the ancients built this geometric dome. Perhaps they built it to chart the heavens. To explain the unexplained. I was asked to photograph this sphere, and so I did. I illuminated the pavilion during the exposure with a ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. And all was good. Um...or maybe it was something a bunch of students built in the 1970s in a canyon in California.
I was excited to photograph at night at an interesting site full of old vintage train cars and locomotives. My joints and muscles felt sore from my second jab, but this didn't dampen my enthusiasm. I met up with my friends Ron, Dave, and Ivan on this beautiful warm March night. The site had much more ambient light than anticipated, but we still managed to make it work. Navajo Peace (1872)
A beautiful moonlit night, I had the whole night to wander in peace through Bryce Canyon in Utah and create photographs. This photo shows the passage of time through a long exposure photo, showing the movement of the stars. The Light Blessing (6843)
~~~~
I had been trying to get to Patriarch Grove, at the end of a 12-mile dirt road way up in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, for several years. Every year, something would happen. Trees would topple. Too much snow. Lightning storm. On this day, I thought my efforts would again be scuttled. A large big rig had overturned in Highway 168. A motorist told me to turn back. I kept going. I pulled up to the accident. A policeman waved me through. Whewww! That was that! This photo was the last photo of the evening. Midway through, a truck pulled up and saw me on the dirt road with my flashlight and pulled up. "You okay?" I said I was. "Okay, just makin' sure. God Bless!" I thought his headlights ruined my photo. Turned out they blessed them. They looked pretty good. I was going to photograph the trees as silhouettes, and, well, he illuminated them for me instead. The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is located in the White Mountains by Owens Valley. At over 10,500 ft (3200m) in elevation, the sky is clearer, the stars more visceral, and my smile much larger. The bristlecone pines are some of the oldest living things on the planet, some growing before Buddha or George Burns walked the earth. This time, I did not use the ProtoMachines to light anything, letting the universe do the lighting for the rest.

The Road to Desert Springs

Night falls on one of about half a dozen cars buried in the sand of the mysterious Mojave Desert. This is a remote location many miles from the nearest paved road. We also walked for a while to get to the location. This was my first visit in over five years. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. This photo will most likely appear in my fourth history/night photography book I'm working on now. Thank you.

The Mojave Desert version of Kolmanskop in Namibia, with homes reclaimed by the desert, forcing people to abandon their homes as they filled with sand. I explored part of the area on a warm cloudy evening with heavy winds, carrying the voices of those who felt the inevitability of encroaching sand dunes. The homes had me reflecting on how they must have felt, putting mine into perspective more. I lit this scene with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight from several different angles during the long exposure. Thanks for looking.
