Lonely Wigwam

An abandoned wigwam in the once popular dome shaped Meteor City Trading Post along historic Route 66 in Arizona east of Winslow. I illuminated the structure with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. This was part of a three-night trip with night photographer Mike Cooper, exploring the remote corners of the desert.

Bombay Beach, Salton Sea recreation area in southern California. A post apocolyptic environment that has a quirky art festival every year, sometimes art is left behind for others to create another version. Added orange light from behind the door with Protomachine LED and added incandescent in the front with Luxli led light. In the distant background is the semi toxic waters of the Salton Sea.
Front of a mill that was built in 1915 from bricks dismantled from a nearby mill that was torn down. Unfortunatly the mill shut down in 1917.

Night time at the cattle ranch bunkhouse. This was photographed near a full winter moon, one of my favorite times for night photography. I love it nice and cool with a longer night for photography. I lit the scene with warm white and green light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. This trip, I met up with Tony Donofrio for a two-night trip filled with a lot of fun and good food. Thanks!!

Pointing Toward the Heavens (6726)

Photographers often suggest you look in back of you when you are photographing or you might miss out on something better. While photographing Comet NEOWISE in late July, that's exactly what I did. Comet in front of me, Milky Way in back. I had to photograph both. This is the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains by Owens Valley. At over 10,500 ft (3200m) in elevation, the sky is clearer, the stars more visceral, and the smile much larger. The bristlecone pines are some of the oldest living things on the planet, some growing before Buddha or George Burns walked the earth. I illuminated the ancient pine with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure for the earthbound elements, and let the universe do the lighting for the rest.

Be careful!! This dinosaur looks like it's about to poke its terrifying head through your screen and take a chunk out of you! I photographed these in Borrego Springs on a cool spring evening. These magnificent sculptures were created by Ricardo Breceda. It was illuminated by a full moon and light from a handheld ProtoMachines light painting device during the exposure. This may appear in a future book of night photography and history that I am working on right now.

When Knowing is Glowing

Night falls on the Goffs Schoolhouse, which was originally built in 1914 along historic Route 66. The schoolhouse served the town of Goffs as a 1st-8th-grade one-teacher school until the spring of 1937. During its 23 years of operation, some 425 different students and 18 teachers passed through its doors. Located on Route 66 at the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association in Goffs, CA. I illuminated the scene with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light while the camera's shutter was open during this long exposure night photo.This was on a trip with night photographer Tony Donofrio and George the monkey for a short November trip.

Red Jaguar (2857)

I love spontaneous trips. I planned this night photography trip several hours before leaving. What made this unusual was that it was a Halloween with a blue moon. I drove north to a decommissioned WWII airfield and photographed underneath the full moon. This is an old Jaguar. Much of the night, I experimented with a weird new tilt-shift lens I just purchased. You can selectively throw a slice of the image into focus and create these creamy blur effects. Why not? As if night photography isn't strange enough already. I lit the scene with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. The doors were locked, so I illuminated the interior from outside, which has a very different alien sort of glow. An Oldsmobile 88 with a bit of patina along historic Route 66 on a night in which heavy clouds obscured an almost full moon. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. I illuminated the car with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. This photo will most likely appear in my third history/night photography book I'm working on now. Night photo of the burned out hull of a city bus in the mountains at 3000 ft. above Los Angeles, setting the fog aglow with its city lights. From 1958 to 1974 there was an Army base armed with Nike Hercules missiles armed. 16 missile bases around Los Angeles known as the "Ring of Steel" were created during the Cold War to defend against attack. These were capable of launching missiles with an intercept range of 100,000 feet. None were ever launched for defense. The charred remains of a heavily tagged city bus and abandoned structures are what remain after the Sesnon Fire in October of 2008 completely burned the area. On a surprisingly foggy evening, I photographed this site, towering over the north part of Los Angeles, illuminating the subjects with my trusty handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during a creative evening of night photography in the mountains.

What is your favorite plant in the American Southwest? For me, it just might be the Joshua Tree. Strange, resilient, and otherworldly, I can't help but feel a connection. This was a beautifully cool, cloudy January evening in Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave Desert. I photographed and scouted a bit for a night portrait photo shoot the next evening. "Stars on Stage" I had the opportunity to trek back out to Stage Harbor Light during an unusually warm evening in October and this was the result.
At this point in the year, the Milky Way has pushed west making such compositions possible around 9pm... rather than 3am like earlier in the season.
I used a Protomachine LED 2 to throw some light on the lower half of the light house and residence. The beam from nearby Chatham Light created an amber glow on the upper half.

Set Your Controls for the Heart of the Moon

This was interesting, walking on a gangplank high off the desert floor at night, trying to figure out how to place my tripod legs so they wouldn't slip through the metal-hole flooring. This is a large metal control room high up on a gangplank of a large abandoned mining operation overlooking the Mojave Desert. This would not be a great place for someone scared of heights since you could see everything below. I suppose that's part of the adventure. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. I photograph a lot of different kinds of abandoned vintage transportation at night. Abandoned aircraft, trains, buses, trucks. But never a street sweeper. Until now. This is a 1926 Austin Street Sweeper. In the late 1880s, street sweepers performed an important function given the constant horse droppings. During this time, the first mechanized sweeping systems were developed, with a water sprinkler dampening the dirt and debris to reduce dust flying. This four-cylinder street sweeper grew out of that, and included not only the water spray system but a gutter broom and a large rotating rear broom. Although almost 100 years old, the design is not so different from the street sweepers of today. I lit this amazing vehicle with warm white light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. This was located at the Motor Transport Museum near the border of Mexico. This may appear in my second book of night photography that I am working on now. Thank you for looking!

Light up the Sky with Diamonds (6519)

Comet NEOWISE was just discovered by scientists in March 2020, and here, just a few months later, some of us get to enjoy this heavenly spectacle. This photo shows it, both tails visible, over the Big Ears of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, run by Caltech since 1958, located in beautiful Owens Valley CA. I usually don't photograph specific celestial events, but with a comet coming around every 6800 years or so, I couldn't stay away. And I'm glad I didn't. I could easily see it with my own eyes, and it was a fascinating, beautiful thing to behold. To get the comet larger, I dusted off my 50mm f/1.4 lens and gave it a try here. I illuminated the dish with a handheld ProtoMachines LED light painting device during the exposure. My title is an unholy mashup of Van Halen and the Beatles. Not sure why. Thank you to the people at Caltech for giving me the opportunity to photograph here! And thanks to Comet C/2020 F3 for creating a magical display of light. I'll have some spectacular cameras to photograph you with next time you come around. ;)

The Family Car (1970)

Charles Manson and the "Manson Family" lived at Spahn Ranch, an old Western town movie set, in the late 1960s, and have left an indelible mark on Southern California, and movies such as "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" show that they will not be forgotten. Manson had a "right hand" man named Bruce Davis who drove a Corvair. This rusty 1960s Corvair is hidden in the rocky mountains just above where Spahn Ranch was and is likely his. Some now call refer to this car as the Zodiac Car due to a popular myth that Bruce Davis was involved in the Zodiac killing, although this was never fully established. If this car could tell stories, they'd likely be stories of horror and violence. How this or any other cars got up here, I'm not sure. This long exposure image was photographed on a warm breezy evening, hiking almost 2 miles round trip to get here. On the way back, I discovered another car, making me wonder how many other secrets these hills hold.

Bathrooms, which were locked for your safety behind a long closed restaurant in the desert that caught on fire a few years ago. Back in the day if you wanted to use the bathroom you would have to ask for the key (outside bathrooms) and so the key would not get stolen they would attach the key to a club, baseball bat, block of wood or anything that was large enough it wouldn't fit in your pocket.

Captain Gas

Night photo with some spectacular Mojave Desert evening clouds and traffic whizzing by a former gas station along Route 66. The appearance is some sort of space alien or robot looking for signs of intelligent life or directions to Alpha Centauri. Building the interstate caused traffic on Route 66 to evaporate, and eventually, many gas stations such as this one were eventually abandoned.

This is a long exposure night photo. I backlit the gas pump from several different angles with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip a day before meeting up with Mike Cooper, Tim Little, and George Loo. This photo may appear in a third book of night photography that I am working on now.

A beautiful night in the Car Forest, Mojave Desert, Nevada. I lit the buried car from several different angles with warm white and red light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the long exposure. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip with Mike Cooper and Tim Little. The place has been tagged up considerably since I first came here, but it is still a fantastic place to photograph.

Ra and Nut at the Temple (2040)

The imposing Temple of the Sun, rising up from the desert floor of Cathedral Valley in Capitol Reef NP, which involves a cool drive along a 17-mile dirt road from Caineville, Utah. The North Star appears directly over the highest point of the Temple of the Sun, showing the celestial movements of the stars over 2 hours. I love seeing how one can compress so much time into a single image. A beautiful moonlit night, I had the whole night to wander in peace and create.

Realizing Your Dream

A prospector from nearby Cadiz didn't have much money, so he ate dog food so that he could purchase this gorgeous 1948 Packard brand new. I photographed this amazing machine on a cool, cloudy desert night. I am grateful to Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association for granting me special permission to photograph at night on their property. This might appear on a forthcoming book on night photography of abandoned places. We shall see!

This is one of the first photos I created with my new camera, a Pentax K-1, which was a joy to use. I've been using Nikons for many years, so finding the controls and everything else was a bit of an adjustment. I photographed up and down Route 66 at night, using Barstow as a home base. While taking this night photo, I illuminated the Packard with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. I wanted the background to be dark, so I chose a shorter exposure than most of my other photos that evening.

Odd tilt-shift style night photo of a rare 1927 Gotfredson Model 20B stake bed truck. In almost complete darkness, I lit the truck with warm white and blue light from my trusty handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure in the inside of what was once an enormous feldspar mill at Motor Transport Museum near the border of Mexico. This may appear in my second book of night photography that I am working on now. Thank you for looking!
