Springtime Shack

Night photo of an abandoned shack along historic Route 66 in the Mojave Desert in California. The structure is on the property of a house that was destroyed in a fire a week earlier, the same day that the Goffs General Store was also burned, both under suspicious circumstances. I had special permission to photograph this property. Illuminated by a full moon and warm white and red light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2. Thanks.

Welcome! Sit and relax inside an abandoned early 1900s cattle ranch in the Mojave Desert. This was photographed near a full winter moon, one of my favorite times for night photography. The evenings are so often beautiful, clear, cool, and long, perfect for night photography. I lit the scene with warm white and green light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. This trip, I met up with Tony Donofrio for a two-night trip filled with a lot of fun and good food. Thanks!!

Bathroom in the psych ward at the WV Penitentiary. The West Virginia State Penitentiary is now a retired, gothic style prison located in Moundsville, WV. It operated from 1876 to 1995. It closed after a riot broke out in 1988 resulting in the deaths of 3 inmates and exposing the facility to the fact that it was not designed for todays criminals.

The Road to the Upside Down

Night falls on what appears to be an upside-down 1949 Cadillac 62 Series, one of about half a dozen cars buried in the sand of the mysterious Mojave Desert. This appeared to be the only car in which the paint is somewhat intact. The other ones are considerably more rusty. This $3500 Cadillac, about half the price of a house in 1949, gave you your money's worth for durable paint, that's for sure. This is many miles from the nearest paved road, after which, we also walked for a while to get to the location. This was my first visit in over five years. After two long years, my night photography friends and I got together for an eight-night trip to Nevada and California. This was a 1856-mile night photography safari with Tim Little, Mike Cooper, and George Loo, and George the monkey. Illuminated during the exposure by a full moon and a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. This photo may appear in an upcoming history/night photography book I'm working on now. Thank you.

One of the many water features at the zero depth entry kiddie pool, this having a slide that comes out the mouth. Construction started around 2010 and was stalled due to money constraints. Work was restarted in 2013 but to date it has never opened.

Beautiful starry night in Joshua Tree National Park, CA, my spiritual home for photography, on a perfect night in mid-June. I met my friend Dave for dinner and then drove out to this picturesque area of the Park for the beginning of my photog adventure in this area. To the left of this photo was a strange humming sound, and as I walked closer, I realized that it was a giant bee hive. That area could wait for another time to explore. Time to walk to a different area and photograph! I lit the trees just a little with a ProtoMachines LED2 handheld flashlight during the exposure.

Night photo of the interior of the charred remains of a heavily tagged city bus and missile assembly building are what remain after wildfires completely burned the area in the mountains at 3000 ft. above Los Angeles, setting the fog aglow with its city lights. From 1958 to 1974 there was an Army base with Nike Hercules missiles armed with nuclear warheads. 16 missile bases around Los Angeles known as the "Ring of Steel" were created during the Cold War to defend against attack. These were capable of launching missiles with an intercept range of 100,000 feet. None were ever launched for defense. On a surprisingly foggy evening, I photographed this site, towering over the north part of Los Angeles, illuminating the subjects with my trusty handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during a creative evening of night photography in the mountains. This may appear in my second book of night photography that I am presently writing.

More of Paul's Scenicruiser. The crossed cracks in the double-pane glass stopped me in my tracks. Difficult to pull this off, but I had to try: The camera was backed up as far as possible, right against the stack of scrap metal visible in yesterday's post, the tripod, set up on a wobbly piece of metal that buckled and bounced with every step. Even with the fisheye, there was just barely enough depth of field, and I had to do a lap of the bus as well as the entire interior to get all the light down before the moon popped into view. Water fountain sitting in front of a college that was founded in 1886 by a Presbyterian minister. When it opened it was available black women in the state of Texas. It functioned in various forms until 1972.

The Red Eye Flight (1745)
Night photo, back end of abandoned B-52 aircraft that looks like it has a couple of red eyes. This Cold War relic was destroyed and left to rot in the Mojave Desert for decades. Brandishing a flashlight capable of producing different colors, I illuminated the foreground while the tripod-mounted camera shutter was open for this long exposure photo. The streaks in the night sky are star trails created by the movement of the stars during the long exposure photo, accompanied by some beautiful high clouds this cold moonlit winter evening.

Taking In The Cosmos (2462)

Two immense "ears" listening to the cosmos. Owens Valley Radio Observatory, run by Cal Tech since 1958, and located in the beautiful Owens Valley near Big Pine and Bishop, CA. I illuminated the dish with a handheld ProtoMachines LED flashlight during the exposure. The sky was murky with the Georges Fire near Mt. Whitney, which was caused by lightning, so I had to be patient, waiting for the skies to periodically clear. This photo shows the celestial movement of the stars over 20 minutes in a single image, an interesting compression of time. Thank you to the people at Cal Tech for giving me the opportunity to photograph here!

Piercing the Arizona Skies (0860)

Spectacular Arizona night skies behind Twin Arrows. And there's that name. Twin Arrows. Despite visitors migrating west during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s along Route 66, Canyon Padre Trading Post still had little business. However, inspired by nearby Two Guns, they changed their name to Twin Arrows Trading Post and added a service station and two giant 25-foot (7.6m) wooden arrows to attract motorists. It worked. Travelers continued to stop until the much faster Interstate 40 was built, causing business to evaporate. In 1995, the business closed and remains abandoned today.

This is a long exposure night photo. I lit the two arrows from several different angles with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. I like the in-your-face visceral, very tangible quality that the arrows have here. And the night sky yielded some spectacular colors, revealing both the sun setting in the western sky but also some gorgeous stars poking through the Arizona clouds. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip a day before meeting up with Mike Cooper, Tim Little, and George Loo. This photo may appear in a third book of night photography that I am working on now.

What's your favorite sort of portrait? Do you prefer them outside or in a studio setting? I had a band that wanted to get outside, do night portraits with light painting, and wanted to get WEIRD. Naturally, I was only too happy to oblige!! :D Here we are in Joshua Tree, a place I hope you love as much as I do! Oh, and here, I'm using a 28-105mm lens. Turns out, wow, this lens is not only quite flexible - it's also great for night photography. Good and sharp! I used a fisheye for some of their photos, but kept it slightly more "normal" here, haha!

Oh boy, a new fisheye lens! This should make my weird pictures even weirder. And pose lots of new challenges, like getting lights, tripod legs and shadows in the shot.

St. Dominic's church was built in 1853(ish) from limestone/sandstone and timber hauled by ox-wagon from Medina River. It was abandoned in the early 1900's and at some point caught on fire.

As a kid, I loved Indiana Jones movies, and so I was excited to photograph the Aeropuerto de Nazca fuel truck used in one of those movies, now rusting away in a decommissioned WWII airfield, photographed on a cool April evening. This is a long exposure night photo which shows the movement of the stars over long periods of time. I illuminated the truck with a ProtoMachines LED2 handheld flashlight from camera right while the tripod-mounted camera's shutter was open. And indeed, the developer of the ProtoMachines, George Loo, as well as Dave Dasinger, joined me during a thoroughly enjoyable night of photography and tacos.

Night photo of a the door of a 1950s Lincoln Cosmopolitan. A full-sized luxury car, President Truman and the White House leased ten black Cosmopolitans, which were modified to provide extra headroom to accommodate tall silk hats, which were in fashion at the time. I used a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device to illuminate the scene while the camera shutter was open in this long exposure photo. Photographed with my friends Ron and Dave on a windy December night near the full moon. This photo will likely show up in an upcoming night photography book I'm working on now!

What's the strangest thing you've encountered in the desert? For me, it just might be this teleportation device, pulsing with an eerie energy. Being a night photographer, I had to photograph it. I illuminated this strange device with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. The streaks of light in the sky are...well, what do you think they are? Are these created during the dematerialization process? This was photographed during a three-night trip with night photographer Mike Cooper, exploring the remote corners of the desert.
