A protest, organised by the recently formed group Stroud District Together with Refugees, took place outside the Subscription Rooms on Monday evening.
Around 70 people gathered on the Sub Rooms forecourt, with plaques and banners, and staged a 30-minute silent vigil opposing Government plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. A similar protest was held in June.
Leader of Stroud District Council, Cllr Catherine Braun (Green, Wotton-under-Edge) later addressed the protestors, saying: “I think the policy is horrendous and there are no legal and safe ways for people to claim asylum in the UK and if legal and safe routes existed, desperate people who are fleeing violence, conflict and persecution would take them and they would not risk their lives embarking on dangerous journeys like crossing the channel, so the most important thing is that the government sets up safe and legal ways for people who are in need of refuge to come to the United Kingdom.”
Caroline Beatty, one of the organisers, said: “We are holding this vigil today because it’s the first day of the High Court hearing to decide the legality of the government policy to transport people to Rwanda. It’s going to take five days as far as we know and then there’ll be a second hearing in October. We’re horrified that they appear to be going ahead without even knowing if it’s legal or not.
“There will be people all over the country who are showing their deep concern about this. I think it needs to be exposed for what it is, and I was looking at the definitions of smuggling and trafficking – people smuggling is the action or practise of illegally transporting people from one country to another and that is what the government policy may well turn out to be, a form of people smuggling – nationally and internationally sanctioned.
“I think the government is playing a very strange game and it’s horrible, but they’re kind of legitimising the very behaviour that they claim to be trying to stop.”
Cllr Braun added: “It’s just so great to see the number of people who’ve turned out on a Monday evening to be part of a National Day of Action here in Stroud. This is a new group, Stroud District Together with Refugees, which has been set up just in response to this new policy around deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda.
“People feel very strongly about it. I think the Conservative Party have really timed this wrong. They haven’t captured the mood of the country. People want to welcome refugees to our country and to provide them with safe and legal routes to apply – we see how people have opened their homes to Ukrainian refugees during the war.
“I think most people in this country would like to see ways for people to safely claim refuge in the United Kingdom.”

CHITRAL: Shandor Awami Adalat (Public Forum & protest public meeting)
was held at Ayun valley some 22 KM from here under auspices of
Muhammad Ali Mujahid Editor of a monthly Magazine (Shandor) and Saifur
Rehman Aziz chief editor of an online paper from Chitral
(chitraltimes.com). During the public forum a protest public meeting
was also held under the chair of Ghulam Hazrat Advocate president
District Bar Association Chitral. Addressing to the protest meeting
the speakers said that brutality cutting of forest is causing for
polluting environment of the area as well as tremendous flood and
natural calamity. They said that we raised a voice against cutting of
forest but local administration lodged FIR against the innocent people
under Anti Terrorism Act (7ATA) and former UC Nazim Rahmat Elahi is
still in Temergara Jail as prisoner. They said that Timber Mafia
involved in eradicating of forest from the valley which will bring
disaster for next generation and mountains of the valley will remain
barren. Timber contractor pay rupees 200 to local royalty holders per
foot but they selling this precious timber of Deodar at 4500 per foot
at Chakdara which is totally injustice. Rate of royalty holders must
be increased they added. They alleged the government agencies for
ignoring the valley because there is no facility for inhabitants of
the valley. There is acute shortage of Doctors, health professionals,
Teachers in hospital and schools of the valley while roads have big
ditches in its middle. People of this valley are deprived from basic
amenities and fundamental rights & facilities. They urged on local
administration to compensate them by kicking off infrastructure and
uplifting schemes in the valley. The speakers also demanded immediate
banning of forest cutting and offer for table talk and dialogue with
local administration for solving this issue.
They alleged forest department for their apathy and wood (timber) of
million rupees were gutted in Achangoal forest last month but no
action was taken against the defaulter. It means that forest
department also involve in this gang. The anger protestors alleged a
local contractor involving in timber smuggling and using hundreds of
feet timber for constructions of boats while local people are issuing
permit only for 60 feet despite that they deserving for hundreds of
feet. Those who spoke on the occasion were Subadar Muhammad,
Muhammad Mujeeb, Fazlur Rehman, Muhammad Ali Mujahid, Ghulam Hazrat
Advocate and other. At last the shandor Awami Adalt cum public form
and protest public meeting was disbursed with praying words of Qazi
Yakhya. A large number of people belonging to all walks of life
participated in the public forum.

The election for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court was very close, but was won by Allison Riggs by a margin of about 800 votes. After the announcement, challenger Jefferson Griffin and his legal team disputed over 60,000 votes claiming administrative errors. It’s become a flashpoint in the state that is still smoldering. The election was in early November and the issue is still not resolved. Many of the protesters in these pictures were notified of administrative issues with their votes. A hyphen in a voter’s last name was a common “administrative issue” that caused a vote to be cancelled. The recount of votes without the 60,000 votes will certainly put Jefferson Griffon on the bench of the NC Supreme Court.

On 1 May 2023, Palestine Action organised outside UAV Tactical Systems, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems UK, to protest against the company's alleged manufacturing and supply of armed drones to the Israeli military. The “siege” was stationed outside the factory and in a nearby woodland, with many protestors setting up tents and intending to stay until the factory closed for good.

I arrived at the capitol at about 6:50pm. You could hear the protesters 2 blocks away yelling "Shame" and "Let us in!" I make my way up to the King St entrance and I'm there all of about 2 minutes when it falls silent instantly. Everybody is listening intently to something and it's soon made known that some republicans are trying to leave the building, so people start going to many different exits to block them and I head over to the main MLK street entrance that I believe is the governors office, but I could be wrong on that, along with a huge flow of other people. There's a stream of people milling around and chanting so I make my way up the steps to the second floor entrance where there's a large crowd shouting "Shame!" I push closer and closer and there's a wall of police blocking the doors. We keep thinking they're about to escort someone out, but it never happens. Finally some police form a single file line and march out, but the doors are still locked with police on the inside looking out.
Meanwhile, I've pushed up to about 2 people behind the doors when all of a sudden, a window to the left of me beside the doors opens up and there's a woman waving people to come in quickly. The window leads into a bathroom. People look around in amazement and wonder what this is all about. The woman again motions for people to get in here. So the most amazing thing happens. A bunch of people press up against the main doors and use their signs to block the view of the open window that people are now filing into. I start firing off pictures, which is what you see above. About 10 seconds pass and I'm wondering if I have a chance of getting in. All sorts of complications are running through my head. A: it's been made illegal as of last week to enter after 6. B: is it a trick? C: The cops have gotta see this and are probably right inside there where I can't see. D: But what is inside? This is the start! GO!
I decide I might not have another chance. I hop through. No sooner than I make it to the door of the bathroom that I am met with police. Oh crap is all I can think. However, it immediately reminds me of a college beer party bust. They weren't even looking at me. They were trying desperately to push past me to get to the window while I was trying to push past them to get in through the door. In the moment of confusion I realized I wasn't going to be in any danger since it was clear all they wanted was to shut the window and stop the flow of people coming in. So I just flattened against the door frame to let the 3 get past me and then I proceeded to get into the hallway.
I can a lot of cheering inside and it turns out there were a couple hundred inside still from before the capitol closed for the night that hadn't left. And this, of course, is when it got interesting. A couple more times huge roars would erupt as a dozen or so people come running in from different hallways. There must be more sneaking in. After about 10 minutes chants of "Let Them In!" began. After only a minute or so, it fell silent and a handful of people ran to the west exit. Another moment of silence followed by huge eruptions of cheering as what seemed like hundreds after hundreds came flowing in from all directions. They gave up and opened the doors!
On a rather cool and sunny Sunday morning, well over 100 individuals arrived at Willowbrook High School in the Chicago suburb of Villa Park. They gathered in the parking lot to listen to citizens of the community, school staff, students, alumni and activists speak out against perceived injustice and make an appeal for a lasting committment to ending the status quo that in their view disproportionately harms African-Americans and their communities. Attendees were also encouraged to continue to educate themselves on institutional racism, to speak out against injustice in their respective family and friend circles, and to commit to voting in the upcoming elections, with an emphasis on making sure to vote in the local races that so often determine what types of policies are implemented close to home. Eight minutes and forty-six seconds of silence were observed, with many taking a knee, in remembrance of George Floyd. A short march and protest was then commenced around the local residential area before returning back to the high school. This event was one example of the increasing number of local rallies in recent weeks in the Chicagoland suburbs.
