On January 14, 2012, hundreds of people defied the rain and took to the streets of Beirut to protest against rape.

Protesters marched from Sanayeh to Riad El Solh square in Downtown Beirut, where security officers cordoned off the area to prevent them from reaching the Lebanese Parliament.

The march was organized by the Beirut-based feminist collective Nasawiya.

I was stunned, overwhelmed, and astonished by the protest at Shahbag. Within minutes I was engulfed by the spirit, energy, and excitement of the crowd there, immediately drawn in the public's desire to get "proper" justice. The environment was phenomenal--there were people from all backgrounds, ages, and religions--and the air was electric with the slogans, optimism, and hopefulness of the crowd.

The country has finally united against an enemy that has burdened it with corruption and hatred even before it was born.

I went the other way; protests are one of the things I actually am a little scared of in Mexico.

Protest against police brutality in New York, 2020.

Marches all over the United States, and later around the World, were triggered by the murder of George Floyd by police officer Darek Chauvin.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an arrest for allegedly using a counterfeit bill.Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down, begging for his life and repeatedly saying "I can't breathe".A second and third officer further restrained Floyd while a fourth prevented bystanders from intervening.[4][5]:6:24 During the final three minutes Floyd was motionless and had no pulse[6][7] while Chauvin ignored onlookers' pleas to remove his knee, which he did not do until medics told him to.The following day, after videos made by witnesses and security cameras became public, all four officers were fired. Two autopsies found Floyd's death to be a homicide.[12][13] Chauvin was initially charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, to which was later added second-degree murder; the three other officers were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

Ice Out of Marriott! In 2019 Marriott International made this statement "Our hotels are not configured to be detention facilities, but to be open to guests and community members as well. While we have no particular insights into whether the US government is considering the use of hotels to aid an in the situations at the border, Marriott has made the decision to decline any requests to use our hotels as detention facilities." (Source ABC News)

Unfortunately, some hotels "owned" by Marriott in the nation has broken that promise. People stand here in front of one Marriott owned hotel in protest to stop renting rooms to ICE agents.

This is not to say this particular hotel is doing this, but the protests are in general to the corporate owners of Marriott. N-DSC4468cr. 9/12/25. Tucson, AZ. Video by Dyan Bone.

The Swedish Democrats held a political rally in Handen today. As per usual there was also a street protest by a few left wing parties, including the Socialist Justice Party. Fifteen police vehicles and fifty police officers surrounded Poseidon's Square during the rally. I decided to stay and document the event.

So this was one of three protests that was going on during my walk three blocks to pick up lunch. At one point two of the protests met on the street and one had to wait for the other to turn before they could continue.

They are very interesting to watch (and hear from the office where I work) as they use firecrackers and drums to make as much noise as possible to draw attention to their cause. I am not sure what this one was protesting, but it is a daily occurence on this street.

Taken during the Singing Women protest in Tel Aviv, which drew some 400+ protesters.

The protesters were objecting to the fact more and more parts of the public sphere in Israel are closed to women, and to the fact the army recognizes demands that women not sing in the presence of (Jewish-Orthodox) male soldiers.

London Students in Anti Vietnam War Demonstration

Throughout 1968 countless anti-Vietnam war protests were held all over both the UK and the world. Many of these demonstrations descended into violent riots, the most severe in Paris and Mexico City. On Sunday 17th March a crowd of protestors, largely made up of students, clashed with police outside the American embassy in London, in what is now known as the Battle of Grosvenor Square. The march was lead by Tariq Ali and Vanessa Redgrave, culminating in a portion of the 25,000 strong crowd being cordoned off in the square by police, both mounted and on foot. Mick Jagger was present for the ensuing violence, resulting in the song Street Fighting Man; even ‘sleepy London town’ had joined in the global activism.

This photograph, taken outside The London School of Economics and Political Science in May of 1968, shows students protesting against the support of the British government for the American war with Vietnam. The comparatively peaceful sit-in was comprised of around 200 students of LSE, largely made up of the Socialist Society, and was hoped to be the start of a revolution of the French model by its organisers. Here we see a section of the multitude of students, an air of hope and positivity as they congregate outside the university. The crowd has an undulating uniform surface, reflecting the shared ideologies of the gathering, punctuated by the static policeman in the foreground.
