how this flower managed to grow out of the rock-hard lava underneath it is beyond me, but kudos to whoever decided to build this little fence to protect it from the strong winds.

The Tufted Puffin is distinguished by its bulbous orange beak, white face mask, blonde forehead plumes, and black body. The sandy soils of Protection Island provide ample room for excavating nesting burrows where puffin parents tend to just one egg. Unlike Rhinoceros Auklets, Tufted Puffins search for fish during the day, returning to their burrow to feed the lone nestling until it fledges.

Protection Island is thought to be the third largest rhinoceros auklet colony in North America, a nesting pair of bald eagles, one of the last two breeding sites for tufted puffins in the Salish Sea, the largest glaucous-winged gull colony in Washington state, and the first location in Washington where northern elephant seals were observed to come ashore and give birth.
In order to protect this fragile habitat the Refuge is closed to visitation. Visitors may view the island by boat, but a 200 yard off-shore buffer is enforced to ensure adult birds are not flushed from their nests.
