The Exeter Canal was the first pound lock canal in the country. In 1564-6 John Trew of Glamorgan cut a 13/4 mile channel to by-pass shallows on the River Exe which prevented boats from reaching Exeter. The canal was only 16ft wide and 3ft deep. It was often impassable with the result that many merchants preferred to unload their goods at Topsham and bring them to Exeter by road
In 1676 the canal was extended to Topsham and in 1698-1701 it was further straightened and enlarged to 50ft wide and 10ft deep to accommodate ships.
The canal was extended to Turf in 1827, where it could be reached by ships at all states of the tide. The Canal Basin was opened in 1830 as an alternative to the river Quay. The fine Victorian warehouses on The Quay were built in 1835
The city's prosperity from the late Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century was based on the woollen industry and trade with Europe. For several centuries Exeter was one of the largest and richest towns in England. When Daniel Defoe visited the city in 1714 he wrote 'Exeter is large, rich, beautiful, populous, and was once a very strong city'.
During the Napoleonic wars (1793-1815) trade with Europe ceased. By the time peace was restored the centre of the textile manufacturing had shifted to the northern industrial towns and the Devon woollen industry never regained its former importance.

Filadelfia, Estados Unidos.- Este jueves, en el centro de investigación académica Perry World House (PWH) de la Universidad de Pensilvania, el vicepresidente de la República, Otto Sonnenholzner, presentó la conferencia “Ecuadorian Biodiversity Protection: A Model for the World”, donde se refirió a las acciones y desafíos del país para el desarrollo sostenible.
En su intervención, destacó que para lograr la sostenibilidad se deben considerar tres pilares fundamentales: sentido económico, respeto ambiental e impacto social positivo. “Todas las actividades generan un impacto, lo que debemos preguntarnos es cómo reducirlo. Debemos avanzar en pequeños pasos, pero que hacen grandes cambios. Por ejemplo, hemos prohibido el plástico en Galápagos», aseguró.
Además, agradeció el trabajo que desarrolla esta institución de educación superior en el archipiélago, porque “hace que las personas en las islas sepan lo que tienen a su alrededor y de esa manera puedan protegerlo. Nadie puede amar, ni cuidar lo que no conoce”.
El segundo mandatario participó como Líder Global en Residencia de PWH, entidad que tiene como misión facilitar el diálogo, la investigación y el análisis a temas relevantes de la política mundial y contribuir a una formación multidisciplinaria.
En este sentido, el vicepresidente Sonnenholzner enfatizó en la importancia de “educar sin adoctrinar. Para aprender de verdad se necesita pensamiento crítico, resolver problemas. El mensaje de Darwin está presente, si no evolucionamos, morimos. Es momento de cambiar, aportar nuevas ideas, ese es el rol de los jóvenes y de la universidad”, señaló.
Como parte de su agenda de trabajo, el vicemandatario mantuvo varios encuentros con la comunidad educativa de esta universidad. Dialogó con el equipo de investigación de Galápagos, donde conoció sobre los proyectos académicos que se desarrollan para apoyar la conservación.
Así mismo, durante una reunión con estudiantes y docentes del programa de estudios latinoamericanos, se abordaron temas relacionados a la situación del Ecuador y a las acciones impulsadas desde el Gobierno Nacional en materia económica, política y social. Finalmente, junto al Secretario Nacional de Educación Superior, Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación, Agustín Albán, se reunió con representantes de organizaciones estudiantiles de tercer y cuarto nivel.
