Yes, I've used the 'Use Hearing Protection' title before but I couldn't resist using it again for this photo. I has to be said that the old, gypsy saxophone player isn't exactly Sonny Rollins -more annoying than musical. Just when I shot the photo, he interrupted his playing as the lady walked past.
A dike of basalt blocks protects the pretty low lying Lajes do Pico against the forces of the sea.

Le donne provano la temperatura del ferro da stiro toccandolo. Brucia ma non si bruciano. Respirano forte quando l’ostetrica dice “non urli, non è mica la prima”. Mother elephants invest a very great deal in their offspring - a 22 month long pregnancy and up to three years of suckling. The bond between mother and calf is exceptionally strong, probably the closest relationship of any animal on Earth. Calves look to their mothers for care, nourishment, wisdom and protection and, if the calf is female, the relationship will be maintained for as long as both are alive.
