Prostate cancer is unique among cancers in that often times patients will choose "ease of treatment" over the treatment they think has the best cure but has unwanted side effects. Who are you...a "limit the risk" type or a "cure first only" person?

A lot of patients wrongly believe that if they have the prostate removed that they will most assuredly be cured. Well...it does happen that he cancer got out (undetected by bone scan or CT scan) before the surgery. The Partin table helps predict the possibility of this. Well, I may not have explicitly used the Golden Ratio... although I'm sure you can find examples if you look hard enough. However, being the last day of November, I was going to take a picture of my mustache today regardless of what the challenge was.
If it makes you feel better, the Golden Ratio is approximately 1.61 and my camera has a 1.6 crop sensor. So any picture I took was aligned with the Golden Ratio anyways. ;)
Primary light came from my almost-finished DIY softbox sitting on the floor in front of me (no diffuser panel yet) and there is a wee bit of fill light from the room lights overhead.

That's standard.
Perhaps to you. Remember, I'm the patient. Patients need to prepare themselves, psychologically. And please, don't feign that you've no idea what I'm referencing. Seeing how this is Mount Sinai, couldn't you have at least made it 8?

Hadn't Moses ascended Mount Sinai 8x to receive the ten commandments. So, what's next? We need to wait on the results. Irrelevant. What's the next step? A PET scan. Do I need a referral? No. May I schedule one now. Yes.

I need to hit the ground running on this. And the first person I need to confer with is 8,500 miles away from me in Southeast Asia.

It’s time men face some startling health facts:
- 1 in 4 Canadians will die from cancer.
- 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
- Men commit suicide three times as often as women.
- A man is 35% more likely to develop prostate cancer than a woman is to develop breast cancer.
- 1 in 20 Canadians- at least 1/3 million people aged 12 and over- have diabetes.
- More than 9 out of 10 Canadians will develop high blood pressure (hypertension) unless they follow a healthy lifestyle.

When one begins to ponder the treatment options for his prostate cancer he has to consider his underlying health. It would be silly to choose to remove the prostate, with all the risk that entails, if one has heart disease or a longevity of a few years. One must asses his health, years at risk and make a decision in that context. Your doctors can help here...listen to them. If you don't trust them...get new ones.

Another technique is thinking of the very best thing about a treatment option. For me it was that I could possibly have the trifecta...cure, potent and continent. The icing on the cake? No radiation in my body. I chose prostatectomy. What will do it for you?

Men need to accurately evaluate their voiding symptoms prior to any decision about prostate cancer. Obstructive symptoms will worsen with radiation and you need to know that "before" treatment because of limited surgical options to correct this issue "after" radiation. These abnormal patterns are also important as they can be seen as a side affect to treatment. The male needs to know that as well "before" the decision.
Whatever the level of your sexual function, it will take a negative hit after any of the treatment options. As a rule the better your function before treatment the better it will be after treatment and the better chance it will recover. Radiation affects it over time but not initially...but affects it just the same. Surgery affects it up front...but has the potential to recover with time. You need to know the difference.
When the prostate is removed the males anatomy in regards to voiding becomes similar to that of a female. Continence then depends on a large part on the external sphincter. When and what degree the sphincter in the male will "step up" and make the male continent after the prostate is removed is variable. This reason alone is often the reason men will not elect to have their prostate removed.
