World Chambers Congress Day 3: Best Unconventional Project: World Chambers Competition

This was the official opening of Wick's Pulteney Town People's Project, a project 10 years in the making. The £4 million pound facility is heated by a 220 Kilowatt biomass boiler which was installed with the support of a £55,000 grant from the Scottish Government's Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES). The grant was administered through Community Energy Scotland which also provided help and support throughout the process

Project 3 reflection

During the past weeks I have learned about how to take pictures with a moving object also known as motion. There are three terms we learned that involves motion, which includes stopped and blurred motion and panning. A picture with stopped motion is achieved with a high shutter speed and a low aperture and will be shown because the object that is moving is in complete focus. Blurred motion requires a low shutter speed and which means a higher aperture and the object that is moving will be blurred while the rest of the picture in focus. On the other hand, panning requires a low shutter speed and the subject is sharp while the background in blurry. This project was easier than I thought due to the fact that I knew how to do it because the previous project we did, the depth of field project, which helped me prepare for this one. For my blurred and stopped pictures my subject was my sister playing with her volleyball. I choose to do this subject because as children we played all the time together, so it brings back memories. For my panning photo I choose to do a car. Although this doesn't have a sentimental connection to me, it represents me progressing as a photographer because personally this was very difficult for me to achieve and for me to finally get a shot I was proud of means I have reached my goal for this project. Also to get my panning photo, it required me to step out if my comfort zone, because I had to take picture of random people driving as they stared at me.

For my first picture, the upper left hand picture is an example of stopped motion. As you can see the ball, which is the object in motion, is in focus with the rest of the picture. I choose to use and aperture of 4.5 and a shutter speed of 400 because to achieve this you must use a fast shutter speed.

The upper right hand picture is a demonstration of blurred motion because the ball and my sister’s hands, the moving objects, are blurry while the background is in focus. To get this I used a shutter speed of 15 and an aperture of 22 because a low shutter speed is required.

For my last picture, the bottom one, I used a car to show an example of panning. This by far was the hardest picture to capture because you had to shoot at the right time. Also you have to follow the subject while you take the picture, rather than staying at one place. I used an aperture of 7.1 and a shutter speed of 15 to get the subject sharp and the background blurred, because you must have a low shutter speed. All in all, I really enjoyed this project because I know I have grown as a photographer and furthered my learning. I can’t wait to apply what i have learned in future projects!

The Mound

Conspicuous in the scene is the earthen mound, or raised, artificial road, which forms one of the lines of communication between the Old and the New Town. This is a modern work, and though neither an object of beauty, of science, or of art, is of great public accommodation and convenience.

"This huge deformity, of lumpish length," extending from Hanover-street in the New Town, to Bank-street in the Old, owes its origin to a tradesman, named Boyd, who raised some planks across the north loch for the purpose of obtaining a nearer line of communication - from the former to the latter parts of the town.

The excavated materials which were dug to lay the foundations of new buildings, were ordered to be thrown into this place, and gradually accumulating, soon formed a large and substantial bank.

Although its precise contents and measurements cannot be accurately ascertained, it may be calculated at 720 feet in length, 160 in breadth, and 78 feet in height. Its solid contents are estimated at two millions of cart loads, or seven thousand entire yards of earth.

Since 2013 the Foundation has supported a tanker truck that distributes water in the slums of Cité Soleil, every day, three times a day, and 6 days a week. Having understood its effectiveness and need, the Foundation has decided, since 2014, to double its commitment with a second truck.

My sketchbook from a self-support Grand Canyon trip was promised to the Art House Coop for a nation-wide tour, which ends with all the sketchbooks becoming permanent parts of the Brooklyn Art Library.
