Less than a year after its birth, the National Aeronautics and Space Agency announced its first astronaut class, the Mercury Seven, on April 9, 1959. Project Mercury proved that humans could live and work in space, paving the way for future human exploration.
This cutaway drawing of the Mercury capsule was used by the Space Task Group at the first NASA inspection.

Mana Island at dusk, seen from my friend's house on the day I helped her with packing before she moved out.
Wednesday, 24th July 2019.
I saw him standing in a doorway outside a store in downtown Toronto. He was in conversation with a friend/coworker. I couldn’t put my finger on it but I thought he had a cool look. I apologized for interrupting the conversation and introduced myself and my project and told him I thought he would make a good portrait subject. He smiled and readily agreed to join my Human Family project. Meet Tyler.
His friend stepped back to watch as I positioned Tyler in the doorway with the painted stone façade behind him. I took a few quick photos, then suggested he moved into the center of the doorway for a more symmetrical photo. Tyler was very cooperative and low-key which made it easy to explain a bit more about the project and give him my contact card. He typed his email into my cell phone notes and I asked him to tell me about himself.
His friend excused himself and said he was going back into the business we were standing near. He assured me that my interruption wasn’t a problem. I learned that Tyler is 26 and manages a cheque-cashing business on Yonge Street. He had just stepped outside and was on break, about to return to work. Born in New Brunswick, Tyler grew up in Nova Scotia which is on Canada’s Atlantic coast. He came to Toronto for the job and although he’s been here two years, he said he is still adjusting to life in Toronto. I’ve been to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia so I know that life in the Maritime provinces is more laid-back, slow-paced, and friendly.
When I asked Tyler about his greatest challenge he said it is his ongoing effort to not sweat the small stuff and to accept the “now” without constantly worrying about what he needs to be doing next. “I’ve always been a go-getter type, kind of driven, so I’m working on easing off and enjoying today.” I asked about formative experiences in his life and he said “That would be the death of my father when I was 21. He was definitely the patriarch of the family who made sure that my brothers and I stayed on track and made something of ourselves. When he died I had to step up to the plate and become my own motivator and guide.” I could understand because there is nothing to make one realize they are in adulthood like losing a parent. I asked if he was propelled into the role of patriarch of the family when his father died and he said “You’ve got it. Pretty much. Even though I’m living in another city and province, I’m still offering support and guidance to my brothers in Nova Scotia.”
His message to the project? “Your worth comes from within, not from without. Believe in yourself.”
We shook hands in parting and Tyler said he thought this was a great project and told me he had enjoyed the experience of participating. Thank you Tyler, for sharing your work break with me and for participating in The Human Family Group on Flickr.
This is my 231st submission to The Human Family Group on Flickr.

Follow-up:
Tyler was kind enough to write me when he received his photos:
“What a great experience to lighten up my Monday. The story is great. One small detail, I'm 26 not 30 :) and for the record, the symmetrical photo is my favourite!”
I finished my Project 365 on the change of the year (project started on the beginning of year 2009) and thought of making a collage of all 365 photos and here it is.

I am revamping an old chair of mine as a fun art project. I have collaged the seat and the back rest parts of the chair with magazine images, and the rungs and legs are going to all be covered in old sewing pattern paper. This is my progress on the project thus far. I'm enjoying it, and i think it looks pretty good!

Project Loon provides the internet directly to the cell phone from a network of high-altitude balloons. This material is recyclable polyethylene.
The only navigation control is vertical (adding or removing air as ballast; the helium remains in a separate part of the balloon) so they can catch or avoid the prevailing winds.
