Today's Project365 Pic was taken at the Ballarat Gold Museum.
I went there this morning to continue my research into the two mines that were in my backyard during the gold rush.
While I didn't find much info (Will go to Public Records Office next week) I did snap a photo of the second largest gold nugget ever found, "The Welcome Nugget".
Actually it's a copy of the nugget. Theres another one near the Thai restaurant at the bottom of Sturt Street, and a monument where it was found outside the Ballarat Leagues Club.
From Wikipedia:
The Welcome Nugget was the name given to a large gold nugget, weighing 2,217 troy ounces 16 pennyweight. (62.37 kg), that was discovered by a group of twenty-two Cornish miners at the Red Hill Mining Company site at Bakery Hill (near the present intersection of Mair and Humffray Street) in Ballarat, Victoria, on June 9, 1858. It was located in the roof of a tunnel 55 metres (180 feet) underground. Roughly shaped like a horse's head, it measured around 49 cm (18 in) long by 15 cm (6 in) wide and 15 cm (6 in) high, and had a roughly indented surface. It was assayed by William Birkmyre of the Port Philip Gold Company and given its name by finder Richard Jeffrey. Eclipsed by the discovery of the larger Welcome Stranger eleven years later in 1869, it remains the second largest gold nugget ever found.
The finders had been among the first to introduce steam-driven machinery into the field at Ballarat and had looked first at nearby Creswick with no luck. Their luck changed at Bakery Hill, however, and several smaller nuggets weighing from 12 to 45 troy ounces had been uncovered before they found the Welcome.
Sold for 10,500 pounds sterling, it found a home in Melbourne until being sold again on March 18, 1859. It weighed only 2,195 troy ounces (68.28 kg) and fetched 9,325 pounds sterling at its resale. From there it was conveyed to Sydney and exhibited there before being transported and exhibited in the Crystal Palace in London. The Royal Mint bought it in November 1859 and minted gold sovereigns out of it.
Models of the Welcome Nugget were made and distributed to the Geological and Mining Museum in the Rocks in Sydney, and the Museum of Victoria, as well as the Powerhouse Museum, who purchased their model in 1885. Models are also a feature of two displays in Ballarat, the Pioneer Miners (Gold) Monument on the corner of Sturt and Albert Streets in Ballarat Central (1951) and at The Gold Museum opposite Sovereign Hill at Golden Point.

Mar 4 - I must confess I ran out of time today...so I returned to the various vintage cameras I've picked up at flea markets or as gifts and picked this Konica because I liked its retro look.
When I was playing with it, I opened the back...to my surprise, there was a roll of film in it, all wound up as if it's been taken. Now I'm wondering if I should get it developed...
Highlight of the day was the Manchester United match against Fulham. A packed stadium, with 79,600 supporters, it was a great atmosphere but sadly a poor performance from Manchester United.
The flag being passed across is in remembrance of players we lost in the Munich are disaster 56 years ago.
Aug 26 It has been rainy and cold for a few days now. Where the poles are to the right is normally a place where you can stand.
I often have this image
that
we
each one of us
move along
our life
each one of our lives
like
a swarm
of fireflies
constantly moving around
following the attraction toward the others around us
or sometimes repulsed by them
pushed by a gust of wind
slowed down by the weight of the thigns we want to keep and accumulate
swayed by a sudden movement of the flock
or wanting to create distance from others
wanting to come closer to another one
or following our path ...
Each one of us
following
so many voices
from the inside
from the outisde
at the same time
then following just one
for an moment
and another one
the next one
I have this image
that if we looked very quickly
focused on a very short moment
we could see
only
a random crowd
agitated
by random movements
It might be beautiful
All these lights
moving in all sorts of directions
We could
get mesmerized by them
And with good reason
But if we looked a little longer
then
we would begin
to
see that some of these trajectories
are not so random
after all
that some of these
fireflies
are going straight ahead of them
and some
are almost not moving
and some
are following another one
and some
are following the majority of those around them
and some
are going opposite of those around
and some
seem hesitant
and some
seem are going back and forth between two direction
or three
or ten
and some
are indeed as random as it gets
and some
...
and
we could
describe each of these
trajectories
and
we could
feel that we understand them
and that the more precisely we describe these trajectories
the more we would come close to undertand the motivations behind them
and what goes in the mind of each of these
fireflies
It would be very clever
to be able to do that
and
we could get very satisfied
with out cleverness
and with good reason
But if we looked a lot longer
then
oh then
these
trajectories that we understood so well
would start to deviate
and to lose
the beautiful clarity
we could find in them
earlier
they
to shift
to bend
to angle
to spiral
to ...
they would appear
more complex
and if we could trace the path
of each one of these fireflies
across enough time
then
we would see
that no two would look alike
and that
what we we understood
about firefly beahavior
doesn't apply
anymore
each path unique
and unpredictable
beyond a few seconds
We could
be amazed by the
infinite
invention
of life
And with good reason
...
And if in addition
we considered
all
the paths
all of them together
all of them
at once
then
we could see
at once
the movement
of all humanity
as a whole
and as individuals
at the same time
It would be a beautiful sight
of unfathomable complexity
...
And
if we contemplated it
for some time
then we would start
to have a sense
of
all these trajectories
as they unfold
together
a sense
of billions of lives intertwined
and moving together
influencing each other
dancing
with each other
I have this image
of bilions of fireflies
moving along together
twirling around each other
for a while
or for a lifetime
some of them dying
disappearing
and some of them
crossing each other
and melting for a moment
and giving birth to a new one
appearing
and take part
and follow its own path
and all of it
incessantly
bustling with life
moving along
I have this image ...
I am one of these fireflies
and you are of them
and we are twirling
dancing
and we exchange
...
and no one can tell
the details
of what will happen
beyond
a few seconds
I am in the middle
of this
incessant
vibrant activity
and it will be
a great joy to see all the lights
around me
as we all
keep going
.............
Today
my brother called me
to tell me that his daughter was just born
A new light
has just appeared
...
welcome to the dance !
The postman was a bit late delivering this gift to me: This advent calendar can be lit with a candle and shows beautiful ornaments.

It's interesting how this tree has chosen to grow. I often sit down here for a rest on my walks in the woods. There is also a geocache hidden under it!

Random Lonsdale Quay cuteness. Hopefully will be the first of many more "people" shots to come this year - after all, it's the one area I really need to improve in.
