I can still see such beauty

When I open my inner eye

I can feel all those people waiting

Sense them swirling by

Down through the ages

Connected deep in stone

Often right beside me

Stopping me from being alone

The pull of the sacred

And the push of the profane

Entwine all of our worlds

Which one will claim

Celestial geometry

Creating signposts on the way

Reading the universal mind map

Can I come back some day

This image had to be taken in Winter so that the base of the Celtic Cross could be seen, and the view through to the church in the background. Once the grasses start to grow and the meadow flowers this view becomes obscured. I became almost obsessive about it as it took me repeated attempts to achieve it. Not to mention the weather having its little games with me. But I am not one to give up, and finally I managed to capture the elements altogether in the right place and time. I wanted to explore the relationship between the Celtic Cross and the Italianate style Church, see if I could get them working together. The starkness of Winter enabled me to do that, and this work is the result.

This church is Glynde Church in East Sussex, UK, and as you all probably know by now, one of my most favourite places on earth.

I have paired this work with Clannad’s ‘In A Lifetime’ featuring Bono, another of my favourites where the connections with the land and the elements within it run deep.

Last December we went for a day trip from Nagoya to Inuyama, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The Inuyama Castle ("犬山城") is one of only 12 surviving Japanese castles built before the Edo period. Walking up to the castle you pass by the Haritsuna Shrine, on the side is a colorful Torii passage.

I processed a balanced HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance.

Surrounding St. John the Baptist church, Markyate, Hertfordshire. This is a very old fence and I do not know who put it there. If it was the Church, then in order to place a boundary between the sacred and the profane (sheep and cow very likely being in the profane bracket). If it was the landowner, the person owning the mansion Markyate Cell, it was probably meant to keep the commoners off his land. Anyway, the iron fence is still there and telling you to respect boundaries. Leica M8, Voigtlaender NC 1.4/35 wide-open.

In the city of Catania (Sicily) in occasion of the feast of her patron Saint Agatha, which took place on the 3, 4 and 5 February (this dates commemorates the martyrdom of the young Saint), and on 17 August too (this date celebrates the return to Catania of her remains, after these had been transferred to Constantinople by the Byzantine general Maniaces as war booty, and there remained for 86 years), when the Sicilian city is dressed up to feast, with a scent of orange blossom and mandarins, and its citizens show that they possess an extraordinary love and bond with the young martyr saint Agatha.

The religious sicilian feast of Saint Agatha is the most important feast of Catania, its inhabitants from five centuries, during the three days of the feast in honor of her "Santuzza" (young Saint), create a unique setting, with celebrations and rituals impressive, which means that this event is regarded as the third religious festival in the world (some say the second ...) after the "Semana Santa" in Seville and the "Corpus Christi" in Cuzco, Peru. Unlike other religious holidays, more sober, to Sant'Agata highlights a vocation exuberant typical of the south Italy, who loves to combine the sacred with the profane.

The cult of the young Santa dates back to the third century, when the teenager Agatha was martyred for refusing the roman proconsul Quintiziano. One year after the death of the young Agatha, on 5 February of the year 252, his virginal veil was carried in procession, and it is said it was able to save Catania from destruction due to a devastating eruption of Mount Etna.

The festivities begin with the procession of the "Candlemas", that are giant Baroque wooden "candlesticks" paintings in gold, each representing an ancient guild (butchers, fishmongers, grocers, greengrocers, etc.), which are brought by eight devotees; the candlemas anticipate the arrival of the "float" of Saint Agatha during the procession. Devotees, men and women, wearing a traditional garment similar to a white bag, cinched at the waist by a black rope, gloves and a white handkerchief, and a black velvet cap, and it seems that such clothing evoke nightgown with the qule the Catanese, awakened with a start by the touch of the bells of the Cathedral, welcomed the naval port, in 1126, the relics of the Holy which fell from Constantinople. On float, consisting of a silver chariot sixteenth of thirty tons, which is driven by a double and long line of devotees with the robust and long ropes, takes place the bust of Saint Agatha, completely covered with precious stones and jewels. On February 4, the parade celebrates the so-called "external path" that touches some places of martyrdom in the city of Catania; the next day, the 5 instead the procession along the "aristocrat path", which runs along the main street, Via Etnea, the parlor of Catania. On this day the devotees carry on their shoulders the long candles of varying thickness, there are some not very big, others are fairly heavy, but some skim exceptional weights.

I am posting here, on Flickr, photographs taken during the two days of February 4 and 5 of this year 2023.

The 4th room is the broom-room. Here about 100 large, mostly self-bonded brooms are exhibited by my broom-collection.

Brooms are not only common, mundane, cheap polish machine for home and surroundings.

One wonders about their uniquely original, often mysterious symbolism with almost holy character - worldwide.

Unfortunately, people are often criticized and despised with this activity, though they provide a comfortable, aesthetic, orderly environment.

Broom also make great brush. Appropriate painting from me already exist or are being prepared.

About a year ago, I had the idea to build a fishing town inspired by Lovecraft's Innsmouth. I have not built large MOCs for a very long time. The last one was the Profaned Capital, which I built back in 2018. For the most part, I built small or medium-sized works for various competitions. But the desire to collect something grandiose did not leave me.

At the end of the summer, I nevertheless began to build a fishing town. But in the process, something went wrong, and it turned out not at all what I wanted to see (the fisherman's house, which I posted in October last year). Then I did not have the time and opportunity to continue this work, but I realized what result I want to get.

And so, at the end of January, I resumed work on the fishing town.

So far, about 60% of the planned MOC is ready.

I think everyone knows what terrible things are happening in the world right now, and no one knows what else will happen tomorrow.

Perhaps Russia will be isolated from the global Internet. Maybe not.

I live 20 kilometers from Kazakhstan, so I think I can access Flickr/Instagram from there anyway.

So hopefully everything will be back to normal. And I will still finish this MOC.

Stay safe!

A torii stands as an iconic symbol of Japanese culture, predominantly positioned at the entryway or within the precincts of a Shinto shrine. This archetypal structure serves as a metaphysical boundary, demarcating the profane external world from the hallowed grounds within, and acts as a welcoming point for the kami. In Shinto belief, kami are revered entities that encompass gods, divine spirits, and various phenomena or essences that command respect. They manifest in myriad forms, including elements of the natural world, potent forces of nature, or as spirits of esteemed ancestors. It is not uncommon for kami to be regarded as the primordial forebears of entire lineages, deeply embedded in the spiritual heritage of clans. The torii, therefore, is not merely architectural; it is a portal for the sacred, inviting the ethereal presence of the kami into the shrine and, by extension, into the lives of the faithful. #ENG: I stood in the middle of Augsburg on the Rathausplatz and enjoyed the wonderful ensemble of the city. Whether on the left the "St. Peter am Perlach" church with the Perlachturm or on the right the magnificent "Town Hall" with its chic facade.

The Augsburg Town Hall was built between 1615 and 1624 on the eastern side of Augsburg's Town Hall Square. The 57 metre high profane building is considered one of the most important Renaissance buildings north of the Alps and, together with the Perlachturm, is the city's landmark. Until the completion of the Behrens Building in Berlin-Oberschöneweide in 1917, it was the highest building in Germany. Due to its historical significance, it is subject to the Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.

The town hall not only looks great from the outside, it also has a few special treasures inside. But more about that later.

Streets of Bologna, Italy. This priest was resting watching his smartphone and I thought it would been a good subject for a photo. I have been lucky he didn't see me.

____________

St. Lambertus was a Roman Catholic parish church in the Immerath district of the town of Erkelenz in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Since May 14, 1985, the church has been a listed building, but despite protests it was demolished on January 8, 2018 in favor of the Garzweiler lignite opencast mine. It was the only church in the district of Heinsberg with a double tower facade. The building was popularly known as the "Immerather Dom".

By 2045, about 5,000 people will be resettled by the Garzweiler II opencast lignite mine, including the village of Immerath. On October 13, 2013, the church was deconsecrated in a solemn service and the eternal light was extinguished.

On June 21, 2017, the two tower crosses were recovered by industrial climbers. In December 2017, a stone crucifix worked into the apse was detached from the wall in individual parts and salvaged. It will be attached to the apse of the Church of St. Francis in Bonn. In an emergency operation by the "Glass Painting Research Center" from Mönchengladbach, led by Annette and Ernst Jansen-Winkeln junior, part of the artistically designed glass windows could be saved in the last four days before the demolition.

On Sunday, January 7, 2018, around 300 people said goodbye with a vigil and displayed long banners to demonstrate against the demolition of the former church beginning the next day. Subsequently, some Greenpeace activists entered and occupied the profaned church.

Demolition of the church began the following Monday after the squatters were escorted out of the building. On January 9, 2018, the two towers that were still standing after the first day of demolition fell.

A preservation or a translocation (relocation) of the church as in the similar case of the Heuersdorfer Emmauskirche was not considered.

We are back to the northern suburb of Mowbray in Launceston, Tasmania. Here is the site of the once proud James Nelson Textiles (founded 1967). It remains fenced off to prevent further vandalism as it now awaits demolition. What's the real crime here?

"The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionising the instruments of production, and thereby the relations of production, and with them the whole relations of society. Conservation of the old modes of production in unaltered form, was, on the contrary, the first condition of existence for all earlier industrial classes. Constant revolutionising of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones. All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions, are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind.

The need of a constantly expanding market for its products chases the bourgeoisie over the entire surface of the globe. It must nestle everywhere, settle everywhere, establish connexions everywhere."

Sixty-six stalls forming the choir of the canons: twenty-eight lower rooms and thirty-eight upper stalls which are accessed either from the ends or from the north and south sections. The main entrance, at the back, is surmounted by the pulpit of the rood screen. Above the backs of the high stalls runs a baldachin formed by a succession of semicircular arches bearing an entablature. It is decorated with a frieze of "grotesque" style motifs that were very popular in the Renaissance. Above the entablature, a series of triangular pediments are adorned with cartouches, heads of angels, trophies and stylized foliage.

But most of the decorative verve of the artists seems to have been concentrated especially in the sculpture of the glazing beads - separations - and the misericords - tablets added, out of mercy, to the back of the stalls to allow the canons to rest. They mixed in the liveliest fantasy fabulous or mythological animals, human beings in their most caricatural forms, rediscovering, above Gothic sculpture, the best creative vein of Romanesque art reinterpreted in Italianate terms of the Renaissance. Indeed, the artists of Saint-Bertrand de Comminges seem to have drawn their repertoire from very diverse sources of inspiration, popularized by the proliferation of religious, biblical, secular, popular, moralizing, historical or epic engravings and the rediscovery of ancient art.

I took several shots of this painting that my mom and dad bought over 50 years ago. I have inherited it and it hangs proudly on one of my walls. It is of "The Court Jester" and though I don't know the artist, I think he did a magnificent job. I will be posting a couple other shots of it later. Hope no one minds. I'm doing some photography practice! :)

A bit of history:

History of the Court Jester

There's No Fool in the Jester

By Glenn Church, published Apr 22, 2008

The jester has a long, historical tradition. Contrary to modern perception, the jester is more than a clown or an entertainer. Although usually associated with medieval Europe, the jester goes back to the earliest period of civilization. Rome, China, India, even Africa and pre-Columbus America had varying roles for a jester.

It was in Europe where jesters had some of their greatest influence. Often called a fool, joker, clown or even less honorable names, the jester's position was actually one of entertainment and political advice. The jester often walked a fine line between the acceptable and the profane. This, however, was because the jester could speak of things no one else in a king's court dare.

Since the jester did outrageous things all the time, he could speak the grave truth and get away with it as something said in "jest". The jester could dispense advice to a king that no one else dare. Undoubtedly, many who wished to influence the king did so through the jester.

The fine line between entertainer and advisor did not give the jester immunity, however. Advice that was too critical could lead to the same fate as any other who opposed the king. Many jesters lost their jobs and lives by overstepping their verbal license.

A jester did not have to be of noble birth. He could be a commoner. He could be learned as a monk or a scholar. He could also be an apprentice of a trade or even a peasant. Jesters were often employed by nobles and could move up to the royal court, as their antics became known. As such, the jester was one of the few upwardly mobile positions in medieval times. Some became quite famous in their day, like a David Letterman or Jay Leno.

Jesters were entertainers foremost. Even their clothes were to make them look like a clown. With dangling bells, colorful and mismatching patterns, the jester was amusing to look at. The jester's cap or cockscomb had three points for the ears and tail of the ass.

Holy Week (Good Friday ) is the period in which Christianity, and in particular the Catholic Church celebrates the faith of events related to the last days of Jesus, including in particular his Passion, Death and Resurrection.

In Trapani ( Sicily)It 's the longest Italian religious festival and among the oldest.

The theatrical representation of the Mysteries is set in Medieval times as that at the time of the Roman occupation of Palestine.

And sometimes becomes a perfect mixture on the borders between the sacred and the profane,

Couple months ago I finally played Dark Souls 3. I was inspired for building something epic and titanic.)

This is Profaned Capital - one of the most memorable location.

Keeping to the Sierra Blanca theme (see previous upload). Still another abandoned gas station in the speck-of-a-town in far Western Texas.

I was aiming for another B&W, but color seemed the better option in this case.

One might have supposed that whoever turned "Truck Stop" into "Sunk Stop" might have chosen a more profane alternative as regards the first word.

Long Exposure photography of a Torii.

A torii is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the profane to the sacred.

11 years have passed since I was last in the Sicilian town of Alcara Li Fusi, for me it is easy to know, I just need to see when I took the photographs of the double and contemporary anniversary held in Alcara Li Fusi, photographs that I have posted at the time on Flickr, they are two holidays that are celebrated on the same day of June 24, both holidays proceed together and parallel without ever mixing with each other, one dates back to an ancient pagan rite, the other is a purely religious occasion, probably in the past the Church tried to suppress the pagan rite by superimposing the cult for San Giovanni, but in fact this fortunately did not happen, so that in the early afternoon until the early evening we witness the procession for San Giovanni, while with the late evening arrival we witness the pagan rite of “Muzzuni”: the photographs that I present here try to describe what I saw in Alcara Li Fusi on June 24th. The "feast of Muzzuni" originates from an ancient pagan rite, on the brochures we read that this is the oldest popular festival in Italy, with characteristics that seem to originate from the Hellenic civilization, enclosing ancient rites from the peasant world, as a rite propitiatory turned towards the fertility of the earth, in a broad sense it is aimed at love, nature, rebirth (U 'Muzzuni others is only a phallic symbol); the term "Muzzuni" which would seem to have similarities "with the severed head" of St. John the Baptist, actually comes either from the "neckless jug" or refers to the mowed and collected wheat in bundles called "mazzuna"; this propitiatory rite that has come down to us, is of Greek and profane origin, it was imported by the ancient peoples who arrived in Sicily and from the Minor States of Greece: these peoples venerated rural divinities, among these Demeter (of the Earth), Kore (of Vegetation), Aphrodite (of Love), Adonis (of Fertility), and Dionysus (of Euphoria), these populations maintained these cults in the territories they colonized, and this is how their survival in Alcara Li Fusi is explained ; in the streets that cross the town small altars are prepared, on them will be placed "U 'Muzzuni" which is therefore a jug with a stub neck, from which ears of corn and carnations emerge, covered with a silk scarf and adorned with gold which belong to the families of the neighborhood, the walls of these altars are adorned with typical carpets woven with a pedal loom (the Pizzare), on the Pizza plates are placed with the "Laureddi", which are stalks of wheat sprouted in the dark; this "the pagan component", then there is the "Christian component", dedicated to the beheaded martyr Saint, St. John the Baptist.
