Ancient chapel of Santa Maria Superiore built by Robert Guiscard and Roger I of Sicily in 1071, converted to profane use in 1520. Restoration of the Hall of the Four Columns, so called in the 16th century when it was decorated with stained glass windows by Simone de Wobreck, author in 1560 of the painting Painting of the Island of Sicily, a work documented in the palace.

11 years have passed since I was last in the Sicilian town of Alcara Li Fusi, for me it is easy to know, I just need to see when I took the photographs of the double and contemporary anniversary held in Alcara Li Fusi, photographs that I have posted at the time on Flickr, they are two holidays that are celebrated on the same day of June 24, both holidays proceed together and parallel without ever mixing with each other, one dates back to an ancient pagan rite, the other is a purely religious occasion, probably in the past the Church tried to suppress the pagan rite by superimposing the cult for San Giovanni, but in fact this fortunately did not happen, so that in the early afternoon until the early evening we witness the procession for San Giovanni, while with the late evening arrival we witness the pagan rite of “Muzzuni”: the photographs that I present here try to describe what I saw in Alcara Li Fusi on June 24th. The "feast of Muzzuni" originates from an ancient pagan rite, on the brochures we read that this is the oldest popular festival in Italy, with characteristics that seem to originate from the Hellenic civilization, enclosing ancient rites from the peasant world, as a rite propitiatory turned towards the fertility of the earth, in a broad sense it is aimed at love, nature, rebirth (U 'Muzzuni others is only a phallic symbol); the term "Muzzuni" which would seem to have similarities "with the severed head" of St. John the Baptist, actually comes either from the "neckless jug" or refers to the mowed and collected wheat in bundles called "mazzuna"; this propitiatory rite that has come down to us, is of Greek and profane origin, it was imported by the ancient peoples who arrived in Sicily and from the Minor States of Greece: these peoples venerated rural divinities, among these Demeter (of the Earth), Kore (of Vegetation), Aphrodite (of Love), Adonis (of Fertility), and Dionysus (of Euphoria), these populations maintained these cults in the territories they colonized, and this is how their survival in Alcara Li Fusi is explained ; in the streets that cross the town small altars are prepared, on them will be placed "U 'Muzzuni" which is therefore a jug with a stub neck, from which ears of corn and carnations emerge, covered with a silk scarf and adorned with gold which belong to the families of the neighborhood, the walls of these altars are adorned with typical carpets woven with a pedal loom (the Pizzare), on the Pizza plates are placed with the "Laureddi", which are stalks of wheat sprouted in the dark; this "the pagan component", then there is the "Christian component", dedicated to the beheaded martyr Saint, St. John the Baptist.

My attempt here was to conjure themes of mortality, ritual, and transcendence through its curated symbolism and dramatic lighting. The crucifix and rosary evoke spiritual devotion, while the skull crowned with a melting candle suggests the passage of time and inevitable decay. The thurible introduces a liturgical element, hinting at purification or the presence of the divine. its presence adds a potent layer of symbolism. The priest’s collar encircling the crucifix visually binds institutional faith to personal sacrifice. It’s not just a garment; it’s a signifier of clerical authority, devotion, and spiritual duty. By wrapping it around the crucifix, the composition suggests a merging of human vocation with divine suffering—perhaps even a commentary on the burden of spiritual leadership or the tension between dogma and transcendence.
The circular form of the collar also echoes themes of eternity and enclosure, reinforcing the idea of ritual cycles and the inescapable nature of mortality and redemption. Its stark whiteness against the darker tones draws the eye, acting as both halo and shackle—depending on how one reads the scene. It’s a subtle but powerful gesture that deepens the narrative and invites theological reflection. The red light painting casts a somber, almost infernal glow, intensifying the gothic mood and drawing attention to the textures of metal, bone, and wax. Each object feels deliberately placed, inviting the viewer to contemplate the tension between sacred and profane, permanence and impermanence. The composition’s stark contrasts and symbolic layering create a visual meditation on death, faith, and the mysteries that lie beyond the veil.
Excerpt from ticino.ch:
The church of S. Francesco, near the convent of the same name, dates back to 1316, according to the tradition. The current building has however been reconstructed in 1583 with the stones of the Visconteo castle. The facade of the basilica is in roman style. In its inferior part there are low-reliefs decorated with symbols representing, according to the tradition, the emblems of the three corporations of the population of Locarno: the eagles of the noble, the beef of the bourgeoisie and the lamb of the landlords. It also presents an inscription in gothic characters with the name of Franchino Rusca and the date 1427. The three naves are cut by impressive columns of granite and, on the sides, some chapels shelter stucco and marble altars dating back to the XVIII Century. On the walls of the minor naves, we can observe fresco traces from the XVIII Century, characterized by perspective effets of profane style, works of the Orelli painters from Locarno.
The adjacent convent, from the order of the miner brothers, has been transformed into a cantonal lecture institute after its reconstruction in 1893.

Charity
Why do the wealthy wicked boast,
And grow profanely bold?
The meanest portion of the just
Excels the sinner’s gold.
The wicked borrows of his friends,
But ne’er designs to pay;
The saint is merciful and lends,
Nor turns the poor away.
His alms with lib’ral heart he gives
Amongst the sons of need;
His mem’ry to long ages lives,
And blessed is his seed.
His lips abhor to talk profane,
To slander or defraud;
His ready tongue declares to men
What he has learned of God.
The law and gospel of the Lord
Deep in his heart abide;
Led by the Spirit and the word,
His feet shall never slide.
When sinners fall, the righteous stand,
Preserved from every snare;
They shall possess the promised land,
And dwell for ever there.

The monastic complex of San Paolo reached its greatest splendour in the 15th and 16th centuries during the regency of the abbesses Cecilia Bergonzi and Giovanna da Piacenzza.
This room is the room of the abbess Giovanna da Piacenzza and was frescoed by the Parmesan artist Alessandro Araldi in 1514.
The painter created the ceiling of the room with a system of grotesques in the ancient style, very close to the canons of Roman painting of the time, representing profane and sacred scenes.
There is a vault decorated with candelabras on a blue background, surrounded by roundels, panels and lunettes illustrating scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
Fushimi Inary Shrine, Kyoto
Torii is a traditional Japanese gate commonly found at the entry to a Shinto shrine, although it can be found at Buddhist temples as well. It has two upright supports and two crossbars on the top, and is frequently painted vermilion. Some torii have tablets with writing mounted between the crossbars. Traditionally, torii are made of wood or stone. In recent times, makers have started to use steel and even stainless steel. Torii mark the transition from the sacred (the shrine) to the profane (the normal world). Inari shrines typically have many torii. A person who has been successful in business often donates a torii in gratitude. The Fushimi Inari shrine in Kyoto has thousands of such torii.
A plane tree in my garden
Inspired by the aria "Ombra mai fu" from the Opera "Xerxes" by George Frideric Händel (1685-1759)
The aria, from the Italian as "Never was a shade" is sung by the main character, Xerxes I of Persia while enjoying the shade of a plane tree.
"Frondi tenere e belle
del mio platano amato
per voi risplenda il fato.
Tuoni, lampi, e procelle
non v'oltraggino mai la cara pace,
nè giunga a profanarvi austro rapace.
Ombra mai fu
di vegetabile,
cara ed amabile,
soave più."
"Tender and beautiful fronds
of my beloved plane tree,
let Fate smile upon you.
May thunder, lightning, and storms
never bother your dear peace,
nor may you by blowing winds be profaned.
A shade there never was,
of any plant,
dearer and more lovely,
or more sweet."

It was already 04:05 in the afternoon when this picture was taken. It was the first picture of the day. Sometimes it's funny, because some days just go strangely. We had already been on the road all day and hadn't taken a single picture. Then came the turn, because in Nowy Kościół a loaded train was departing for Złotoryja and further to Legnica.
Newer information wants to prove the mine in Wilków should have lost its concession. No one knows more precisely. However, if this information is true, the traffic there will end quite soon. Hurry up for the last photo!

A birthday image ( March 10 ) created for XandraM of the "Shock of the New/Award Tree/ Max Fudge" association of Groups.
I started with two very divergent Pano images, one of The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York and one of a mannequin in a store window on Bloor Street in Toronto, and worked from there. All aspects of the completed piece come from these two images. A lot of photo manipulation was done to their variants and layered repeatedly in varying aspects. Both images were originally shot in 2015.
When I was done it struck me that I had created something that had a more 'classical' or 'painterly' feel to it. The image of the 'magically transformed' cathedral ( looking like a castle in the forest ) along with the mannequin and the indeterminate, twisting form in front of it made me think of Jean Cocteau's film "La Belle et la Bete" ( Beauty and the Beast ), from which the Disney film was derived. So I went with the connection to Cocteau in the titling.
While the Cocteau reference and homage are there, this is also a metaphor for the "beauty and the beast" of modern life. What often appears to us as beauty is quite often very much the beast. I chose these two images at 'random', as contrasting elements, but soon realized that there was a definite dialogue between them that had much to say about the sacred and the profane, the spiritual and the material. David Bowie, in his 1977 song, "Beauty and the Beast" expressed this in a very powerful way, closely echoing Hermann Hesse's "Steppenwolf"/"Narziss und Goldmund" theme.

A Pit 'di Terranova di Pollino is one of the eight Lucanian tree rituals that have been renewed for centuries between the Regional Park of Gallipoli Cognato and the Pollino National Park, between the sacred and the profane.
Unlike the others, that of Terranova di Pollino does not celebrate the "wedding among the trees", while remaining faithful to the script during the cutting of the tree in the days preceding the party.
This extraordinary ancestral ritual coincides with the feast of St. Anthony of Padua, on June 13th, the day when the fir-raising and the ascent of the "a pit", and culminates with the procession in honor. of the saint.
In the days before the tree is cut, in the locality of Cugno dell'Acero, and the shoulder transport by the local men begins.

No, that's the cooling tower of Neckarwestheim nuclear power station. It's already out of service with German Energiewende. But obviously still needs cooling down before dismantling starts. Looks like a giant soup bowl from close up - so quite artistic for something so profanely industrial.

The University of Oñati is the most representative example of the Renaissance in the Basque Country, both for its architecture and for being one of the most significant institutions of the Renaissance spirit.
The best example of Renaissance civil art in the Basque Country
Discover the first university in the Basque Country with our guided tours, accompanied by an interpreter and open to everyone.
Its founder
Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola was born in Oñati at the end of the 15th century. He stood out in the fields of religion and politics, serving as bishop in Ávila and Mallorca. He was also president of the Chancellery of Granada.
Zuazola himself founded the university in 1548, which, for three centuries, primarily offered studies in law, medicine, philosophy, theology, and literature.
Today, it houses the Archive of Protocols of Gipuzkoa, the Basque Institute of Public Administration, and the International Institute of Legal Sociology.
Plateresque Facade
It is the work of many stonemasons and sculptors. In it, we can clearly appreciate the humanist spirit of its founder, as well as a blend of the sacred and the profane.
Among the Plateresque elements that adorn the façade, we cannot fail to mention the semicircular arch, which depicts the founder in a prayerful position. Also noteworthy is the large coat of arms belonging to King Charles I (V of Germany), who was patron of the University.
Mudejar Coffered Ceiling
Built in Ávila by Gibaja. The material is oak wood, manufactured in the same province. This type of coffered ceiling is not often seen in the Basque Country, but Zuazola wanted to do something different.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Typical Renaissance Cloister
Two floors connected by two staircases with six arches on the narrow side and seven on the wide side, giving the cloister a quadrangular shape. The most representative features are the 32 medallions, which depict mythological and royal couples, distinguished for their virtue.
Oteiza Sculpture
THE EARTH AND THE MOON (Antonio and Francisco) – According to the sculptor, it represents "The obligation to open our hearts to the outside world."
