“… to make profane golfers contemplative, and the contemplative golfers better men.” unknown
On August 8th, 1931 the Rainier National Park company opened its nine hole golf course here in Paradise Valley. It featured four par 3s, four par 4s, and one par 5 and boasted spectacular views of Mount Rainier at every hole. (the first tee box was three hundred feet above it's landing area!) :) Alas, or fortunately, depending on your views, the shortsightedness of opening a golf course in the middle of nowhere during the great depression combined with the fact that it could only be played for three or four months a year before it looked like this image doomed the venture in just two months as when the snow fell in October 1931 it buried the course literally and figuratively.
I got the numbers and that quote from an article entitled 'the short, spectacular life of Paradise Golf Course, Mount Rainier written for a mag called NW Hickory Players. It's a short read, but the best part is a staged photo of a guy teeing off from a precipice I can only assume is somewhere atop one of the peaks of the Tatoosh Range, pretty amazing.

This is Sisters of Mercy energy. This is Joy Division meets Siouxsie Sioux meets every darkwave playlist that ever made you feel something. This is goth not as costume but as religion. As lifestyle. As the only logical response to a world that's too bright and too loud and doesn't understand why some of us prefer our music dark and our fashion darker.
She's not trying. She just is. Born for basement clubs and foggy nights and that moment when the DJ drops the perfect track and you realize you're exactly where you belong.
The crosses aren't irony. They're iconography. Sacred and profane all at once. Beauty in blasphemy. Power in the symbols others fear to wear.
This is Lucretia looking back at herself and liking what she sees. This is the reflection that stares down the world and doesn't blink first.

grand papillon de forme vaguement triangulaire possédant une queue, d'une envergure de 50 à 70 mm (le mâle est plus petit que la femelle) et reconnaissable à ses grands vols planés. Sur un fond blanc à jaune pâle, l'aile antérieure présente six rayures noires disposées en éventail et l'aile postérieure une bordure noire et des lunules marginales bleues ainsi qu'un ocelle anal bleu cerné de noir et surmonté d'un arc orange.
Plus rarement, les profanes (dont moi) peuvent le confondre avec le grand porte-queue Papilio machaon !
Aujourd'hui j'ai appris à les différencier !
The flambé
is a large, vaguely triangular butterfly with a tail, a wingspan of 50 to 70 mm (the male is smaller than the female) and a long, gliding flight. On a white to pale yellow background, the forewing has six black fan-shaped bands, while the hindwing has a black border and blue marginal lunules, as well as a blue anal ocelli surrounded by black and topped by an orange arc.
More rarely, laymen (myself included) may confuse it with the great hairstreak Papilio machaon !

Pour l’œil profane du touriste de passage, nul doute que la fresque du Cobaty est un piège efficace. En marchant le long des halles, place de la Motte, sans connaître la supercherie, difficile en effet de ne pas croire que se dressent, en face, deux bâtiments séparés par une étroite ruelle que semble cacher un long rideau de scène. Et c’est peut-être là que l’illusion se révèle : c’est un trompe-l’œil, et le rideau qui s’étend a bien des choses à dire.
Maurice Bordes, président du Cobaty Limoges à l’époque de la réalisation de la fresque, se charge de l’explication. « L’idée était d’abord de créer une perspective sur un mur plat. Il y a donc cette impression de ruelle entre deux bâtiments, ruelle dans laquelle se sont installés des bateleurs qui répètent leurs numéros. » Et c’est ainsi que se dresse un rideau de scène reprenant des images marquantes de la ville, historiques ou culturelles.

"Get of exit 7." Siri cheerfully chimed in the English accent I programmed her to speak because it sounded less annoying than the American accent. About twenty miles down the main state route she told me to turn right. I then went down a few miles and instead of retail stores and gas stations I was on a narrow two lane road with scattered small houses and farm fields. About four or five turns later with a few miles between each turn I was now going up a ever narrowing road with nothing but dense trees and brush on each side. A pickup truck came down going the opposite direction and I had to ride on the side of the road to let him pass. Siri told me to make another turn and now I going down a rough broken road that looked liked it was paved once fifty years ago and then people forgot about it. "Where the f**k are you taking me?" I muttered to my I-Phone's AI. I was then told to make another turn and this time I'm going down a totally unpaved road that is just dirt and rocks for a couple more miles uttering more profane curses to Siri but thankful I have an SUV that was built to take such things. I finally reach a large dirt parking lot with about twenty vehicles haphazardly parked all over the place. I park my Pathfinder and look across the parking area to see a perfectly paved nice two lane road connected to it where other arriving vehicles were coming down and cursed Siri one last time for taking me down the out of the way scenic route again. I put on my hiking shoes, grabbed my gear bag with a few bottles of water and proceed to hike a summit about less than two miles away. Compared to other hikes I've done recently it was not that strenuous and I reached the summit in about an hour and half at a relatively leisurely pace. The summit had only one point that wasn't obscured by trees. At the top there was a small plaque dedicated to some ten year old kid that died up there back in 1963. Sad story but in the end that was the kid's parent's fault. So I take a few shots which wasn't easy as the atmospheric and smog haze was really bad that day and I had to use every photo software trick in the book to extract a decent image from the horribly washed out image I started with.

Once a pleasingly designed advertising locomotive, the 186 381 now bears only the somewhat mundane design of the leasing company Akiem. However, the locomotive is still in service for HSL. On 19 June 2025, it transported a gas tank wagon train from eastern Germany heading south. A photograph of the locomotive in action was taken at Bernhards in Haunetal in eastern Hesse.

L’église de Sainte-Anne a été entièrement rénovée en 2017 Sainte Patronne de l’église paroissiale du village, Sainte Anne est célébrée tous les ans le 26 juillet Ce jour-là, après la traditionnelle messe, la statue de la sainte est portée dans les rues du village en toute fin de journée avant de revenir à l’église.Les habitants de Saint-Florent se retrouvent après autour du verre de l’amitié et sont invités à manger des cuisses de grenouilles comme le veut une tradition plus profane.

Wall and gate of our local Baptist Church. This is a very distinct demarcation line between the sacred and the profane, but the gate is open. In fact, it is this Baptist congregation that is offering a warm welcome to many asylum seekers accommodated in a hotel nearby - most of them Muslims very likely. Celje, Old Counts' Mansion
This most beautiful Renaissance building in the town was built between 1580 and 1603 on the southern side of the city walls. At the beginning of the 17th century it was further embellished by arched hallways, and during the 1930s restoration its aesthetic value was increased by the discovery of the famous Celje ceiling. Since the end of WWII, it accommodates the Celje Regional Museum, which holds permanent and temporary exhibitions. Its cultural-historical exhibition is a walk through time from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, while the exhibition on Alma M. Karlin enables visitors to learn about this worldwide traveller, writer and distinguished woman from Celje.

One of the main attractions of the Celje Regional Museum is the Celje Ceiling, a sole example of profane painting at the transition from Renaissance to early Baroque.
