(Southern Slope. Mineral Ridge. Last recorded transmission)
We had not received authorization to proceed.
But the surface emitted a signal, like a thought surfacing from the crust.
We approached with caution, but the ridge enveloped us.
Not with force.
With something subtler, an unsettling familiarity.
The contact wasn’t physical.
It happened beneath the surface, like a silent connection.
It became a line.
A threshold.
A fissure.
Each rock seemed to read our steps.
Each ridge returned our weight.
It was not matter to cross through: it was an organism that recorded.
We stopped speaking.
The sensors reset themselves.
Beneath that dense surface, something held warmth and intention.
We understood too late that the ridge didn’t separate anything:
it contained.
And as the wind fell silent, we perceived the true purpose of our arrival:
not to document.
Not to explore.
To be recorded.

(Versante Sud. Crinale minerale. Ultima trasmissione registrata)
Sotto quella superficie densa, qualcosa tratteneva calore e intenzione.
Abbiamo capito tardi che quella cresta non separava nulla: conteneva.
E mentre il vento taceva, abbiamo percepito il vero scopo del nostro arrivo:
non documentare.
Non esplorare.
Essere registrati.
Urice is incredible. He made my week/month/year. I met him on the corner of Adams and Wabash. He was with Larry, one of his friends. I went to shake his hand and he said "I don't shake anyone's hand without taking my glove off". Then he proceeded to tell me that he was on the news last night talking to a reporter about the bitter cold that was coming and how they were planning on dealing with it. He continued to talk and was brilliant, so I decided to record his comments. Then he said "walk with me!" So we started walking and he was telling me how he feels like he is a spokesman for the homeless (and he truly is!) He talked about how people stereotype the homeless and think they're all drug addicts. To the contrary, he said they're people like you and me, people who've lost parents, or lost a job, or plans fell through and they found themselves on the street. It could happen to any of us. He was so passionate about everything. He talked to me for at least 30 minutes about homelessness, life, and some of his personal experiences. We continued to walk and he was going to show me where he lives, so we made it to Columbus, near Lower Wacker and there were a bunch of makeshift beds under a heating vent. We walked up to a neatly made bed with water bottles on it (to keep his blankets from blowing away from passing cars), and he said "this is my bed". He didn't say it in a "woe is me" voice, but just matter-of-factly "this is where I live". The city only allows him to have three large garbage bags of belongings. Any more than that and they have to throw the excess away. He said sometimes the police will stop by and bring them coffee and donuts. One police officer came by and gave Urice two pillows. There was so much more he said which I don't have time to post (but I will at some point). These were his ending words to me: "People in general are amazing. And I learned that being homeless. I learned that being homeless. You got a lot of people out here that don't judge us. And those are the ones that are amazing. This police officer...it really shocked me--she drove up and she said, "you know what? I got a couple pillows in the back seat. They're not brand new but they're great, they're good. and the police officer gave them to me. and I was so happy. you know, that made my day. Some of these people really care about the homeless. It doesn't matter who you are. It doesn't matter whether you're a police officer or a fire fighter. It doesn't matter whether you're a preacher, deacon--it doesn't matter who you are. If you've got a heart for people, it's a good thing...'cause I've got a heart for people. When people do something for me, that's the type of person that I am! and then I can relate to someone like that, knowing I would do the same thing that they're doing for me right now. That's the reason I do what I can to help the homeless. Because they're in the same position that I am. So I do whatever I can to help them. I do more for them than I do for myself, because I know God's gonna bless me as well. I'm not doing it for a blessing, I do it because I LOVE these people, because they remind me so much of myself...and I don't judge. The Bible says that if you judge, the judgement will be greater at the end, so I don't judge people. I love everybody man, I love EVERYBODY, and there's nothing they can do about it, me loving them. What're you gonna do? I say "I love you". What're you gonna do to me? You can't do anything! That's the great thing--I love that word, "LOVE", I love the word "love"."
no visit to this spot would be complete without a look at it's long term resident the tug proceed which continues to rust away , and has featured on these pages several times
it was built in belgium in 1954 as the hendrick 11 and has worked at antwerp , poole ,london, plymouth and the tyne under various names , It arrived here under it's own power in 1995 and has simply decayed ever since .

GM&O southbound "The Limited" stops at Joliet Union Depot behind, E7, E8 (103A-100A); a "Diverging Clear" signal awaits the train's departure, probably to proceed down the G-Mo's own "main line" to Mazonia at the South Joliet interlocking. The alternative would be to join the Santa Fe for the shared double track to "Pequot", and then on a short connector to Mazonia after the Santa Fe took off for Californny (and Texas) on its own.
The same CN/GTW train that could be seen a short distance away in my previous post stopped for a meet at South Bend, is now on the move again and has just come off of Conrail and is heading over Lincolnway East to proceed out of town.
This was train 390, powered by a matched set of GTW GP38-2s and as with all CN trains, they had to utilize Conrail trackage for a short distance near downtown before re-entering CN/GTW rails to continue up into the state of Michigan and on towards Durand.
This location has not changed all that much since that June day back in 1996 - and it also appears that the cool “GRAND TRUNK WESTERN” sign is still visible on the railroad overpass as of the 2024 date of this posting. ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

Following a brief stop at Clematis station the guard of the Climax Twilight Outing instructs the driver to proceed onwards to Menzies Creek.
1694, colloquially known as "Climax" after its manufacturer, sees sporadic use on the railway throughout the year, and only ventures out for special trains such as this. With the summer fire season drawing closer and closer, October's Twilight Outing is likely to be the last time it will be in steam until the following April.

To cap our Sinulog Saturday, we proceeded to the SM Mall, had dinner with old flickr friends Maning and Tet and at 8PM, we all went up to the SM roof deck to watch the 1st Sinulog Pyrotechnics Competition.
As pyrotechnics go, I’ve seen more impressive fireworks but then, I really wasn’t expecting anything grand, what with the current economic crunch...

One roads leads to two and suddenly there is a junction for traffic and the scope for decision, revision and division til contemplation arrives at cognition and transmigration induced by transmutation, we can somewhat transmogrified continue our transportation.
The metamorphosis that awaits at the cross roads, or the junction of ways gives us a chance to look at the roads not chosen as different fates, or potential we have the chance to transmogrify into the pupa and to transfigure through the imago and transmute into the butterfly that flutters down the right road, or the best road, or the only road beating our wind evoking wings as we proceed and progress in due procession to our ultimate goal.
The Chthonic Hekate is underwhelmed in the underworld by the sparkle of the above and the dark intentions from below that make some of the sparkle. She knows the outcome of each of the ways ways available to us. She might like to be acknowledged, but that does not mean that she will share her knowledge, unfortunately she is happy to leave us in self-knowledge that is mis-knowledge. The Triple Form of Hekate is full within the three phases and yet there is also a Forth Form. Her light in the darkness includes sparking, lighting, spluttering and also none igniting. Her symbol of three Moon in reflected illumination is also a symbol brightly obscuring her other form within the Dark, or New Moon. She is happy in the dark with her unilluminated vision and her brightness in the Full Moon also knows the New Moon visible on the horizon for just a few moments. Called for and sought at the Trivia Three Ways and crossroads also asked for and answered within the home where all junctions are started and ended and where insight and protection are often most required. From the ignition of Fresh Flame to Full Light through Dying Embers and within Extinguished Ashes she is never absent always available if you call on her without subconscious desire, rather with intent to take her hand with resolve to lead you on towards where you aspire.

So we're at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, a little west of Philly, on Thursday, and it is so cold out they cancelled their famous dancing fountains. Therefore I'm on the nearly five acres of botanicals inside, and I see this woman contorting to take a picture; I ask her how it worked out, and she shows me, saying she's playing with shooting lights out of focus. "Nice," I say, thinking that's not for me, and I go on taking close ups of flowers and leaves. Then we go for a late lunch, leaving the restaurant just about at sunset. So I go to shoot some of the many gazillions of tree lights, and, of course, the camera is still set for close-up, and the lights are all out of focus, and look like this image. This time I begin to appreciate what the woman was shooting for, and proceed to shoot a lot of holiday lights, of which this is the first example. I hope you're as taken with the way it came out as I am.
This was taken on day two of our trip to Bulgaria, within a night it went from a tiny dusting of snow on the peak of the mountain to a whole foot of snow. We awoke to a a beautiful cold white landscape which was absolutly beautiul.
Half of us got into the 4x4 and made our way to the peak. With a km still left to walk to the Buzluzdha monument that was right at the top we proceeded to hike in knee deep snow carrying cameras bags and costumes and lights. It was a test of endurace, by now rain had begun and it drenched us in cold winds from all sides, finally out of breathe we made it inside. But it wasnt a relief, there were still howling winds inside and rain poured from the falling apart roof. A few times lightening clapped and part of the ceiling fell to the ground.
The poor model Dorina faced a freezing couple fo hours to continue with the photoshoot. She was truely amazing as myself and Nicola got her into the stunning costimes of Agnieszka Osipa, I set up my light and shot it as quickly as humanley possible. I had help from the others at all stages to help it go as quickly as possible. After the shot, we wrapped her in as many blankets as possible. Tired, cold and drenched we made our way back down the mountain, the rain finally stopped and when we reached the 4x4 we decided to try and fit all 10 of us inside, with some of the guys hanging out the doors and others on the bumper, we drove slowly back to our hostel to warm up. It was the hardest shoot I have done to date for my Underworld series, but completly worth it.
Buzludha is a former communist monument at 1441 metres high. The monument was built in 1981 but has fallen into disrepair and is no longer looked after by the Bulgarian government.

I was actually trying to photograph the leaf when Tyler dutifully walked in front of the camera and proceeded to pose for me. He made certain these photographs were of him rather than just some silly leaf!
As our cruise ship proceeded along the Rhine, we stopped for a day in Heidelberg -- one of the oldest university towns in Germany, and all of Europe.
I decided to go along on the tour with the rest of the group on this particular morning -- even though it was foggy and raining, and there wasn't much opportunity to wander around. After seeing several parts of the old campus, we were taken back down to the town square and given an hour to amuse ourselves in the rain.
As usual, I wandered about and took some photos...
**********************************
During the first two weeks of September 2015, we took a river cruise down the Rhine River, and wrapped up the trip with a few days in Berlin. This Flickr album contains various photos from that trip …
We spent the first couple days recovering from jet-lag in Interlaken, Switzerland. This is the site of the Jungfrau and various other spectacular peaks in the Alps range — but it was so foggy that we could hardly see anything. I’ve included a couple of videos of a tram ride down the mountain, as well as some paraglider who floated down into the town park.
We then traveled to Bern, where we got on-board a Viking Cruise ship that headed north for the next several days — eventually arriving in Amsterdam, after making stops nearly every day to see ancient castles and fortresses, as well as various villages and small towns that have survived various wars, tyrants, and regimes for well over a thousand years.
From our final cruise destination in Amsterdam, we flew to Berlin — where we spent a few days at a very nice hotel that turned out to be in what was once East Berlin. Indeed, the separation between East and West Berlin, once so obvious and important, is now almost impossible for a visitor to spot. Except for some rubble, and a few small mementoes (like Checkpoint Charlie, a few blocks from our hotel), there is no obvious difference between East and West from pre-1989 days.

This female Belted Kingfisher was fierce. She flew up the branch with a fish and proceeded to whack it against the branches before swallowing it (and yes she did). Based on the time stamps on my photos, she mercilessly beat this fish for more than five minutes before eating it. And yes ,this is a big crop (unfortunately).
This great blue heron had just submerged itself in the water, while fishing. It came up empty “beaked” and proceeded to to vigorously shake itself dry, thus its ruffled feathers, by darkening the background post editing I think I brought out its distinctive blue color.
Abigail first waking up and realizing the kitty was on her belly sleeping too... She thought it was her teddy bear at first (in the background) and proceeded to get all kinds of excited when she realized it was real! :)
The next day we proceeded to Uncle Bud's Hut, which had an even more spectacular view of the mountains. At 14,440 feet (4,401 m) Mount Elbert is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains of North America and the highest of the fourteeners in Colorado.

I finally decided to step forward and yesterday I purchased my very first DSLR camera n_n a Nikon D60.
Phew, I'm going to have a very busy summer, trying to get the hang of the new cam... anyway, I'm looking forward for it n_n !! I'll do my best O_O !!
I was going to finish the last of my 'raptor kinda day' experience, when after lunch I noticed the squirrel digging in the back yard. I went to the patio door and heard something, looked up and saw what I think is a juvenile Coopers Hawk. The birds all flew away, but the squirrel proceeded up the latice to take a closer look at the hawk, probably not a good idea, but it 'startled' the hawk, flapping it's wings and keeping a close eye on the squirrel as it made it's way by...it was quite funny to watch. I wish I could have gotten the squirrel by the hawk!...best seen large!
