We took a little trip down to Georgetown to take pictures. I spotted this awesome mural/artist collection on the side of a building and we stopped to take some shots.
The Problems of First Contact: First contact is one of the lasting tropes of SF. But once contact has happened, then what? Should an advanced race hide itself from us for fear of stunting our natural growth? Is it immoral to leave individuals in primitive poverty in the hope that they might one day develop their own culture? Can advanced peoples colonize a planet inhabited by primitives and live in peace with them? Are there any useful object lessons from science fiction? How about from our own history?

The biggest problem I had with with taking these shots wasn't the exposure or even the difficulty in swinging the lights, my shutter release cable (a knock off of the Canon timer cable) wouldn't trigger the shutter after the mirror was locked up.
I lost at least 5 shots that were all fine to this. Long story short, I'll not be using mirror lock up when trying this next time. The funny thing about it though, when I was sitting behind the camera, pressing the button and waiting, it worked fine every time. I did the same thing and walked away, it never worked?

The Indiana Supreme Court hosted a Law School for Journalists on July 20, 2011 in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis. The sessions served as tutorials on problem-solving courts, court structure and funding, juvenile court, sentencing, least understood areas of the law and tips on how to get court information. Former Los Angeles Superior Court Media Liaison and the author of "Anatomy of a Trial: Public Loss, Lessons Learned from The People vs. O.J. “Knot-A-Problem” is a puzzle/ problem solving interactive activity. It uses a data projector, and a ultraviolet lit touch screen to display the activity to the user. Before approaching the space, the screen is blank and no activity is visible therefore making the activity ‘invisible’ unless approached. When the user touches the screen, the ropes created by UV light and data projector appear and the sequence begins (as demonstrated in figure 1.) The first UV knot may not necessarily appear in the same direction of the guidline. Firstly the user must spin the rope around with their index finger, following the arrow prompts to make sure the two silhouettes are face the right direction (like a puzzle piece). The user then follows the prompts of the arrows to trace/ coax the UV rope to mimic the motion of the guide rope that is tying itself. The aim of this activity is to educate users on how to tie knots and how to identify them whilst engaging the active user with a simple ‘game’ that increases in difficulty once the user graduates from task to task.
Before someone challenges the statement on the window -- for instance, questioning whether I really know the country of origin of those bungee cords for instance -- let me clarify. Tras casi 13 años sin agua en algunos espacios clave, un centro de salud de Tegucigalpa fue rehabilitado con el apoyo de la OPS y del Gobierno de Canadá, y ya cuenta con este recurso indispensable en todos los lugares de atención a pacientes
Entre paciente y paciente, la ginecóloga Ana Carrillo debía salir de su consultorio para lavarse las manos, pero desde que se finalizaron las obras de rehabilitación en el Centro Integral de Salud (CIS) San Miguel, en Tegucigalpa, Honduras, puede lavar sus manos con agua y jabón en el lugar de atención, una medida crucial para prevenir y controlar infecciones y mejorar la calidad de la atención.
Cuando la higiene de manos se realiza adecuadamente, previene el 50% de las infecciones adquiridas durante la atención de la salud. Además, se evitan secuelas y muertes, y se reduce el uso de antibióticos, otros tratamientos y hospitalizaciones.

Antes me tenía que desplazar varios minutos al área de vacunas para lavar mis manos entre cada paciente y eso generaba una demora en la atención médica”, cuenta la doctora Carrillo. Ahora, dice, “el hecho de tener agua potable -en el consultorio- ha sido clave para no contaminar a mis pacientes y cuidar también mi salud”.
Las obras de rehabilitación del CIS San Miguel de la capital hondureña formaron parte del proyecto Prevención de nuevas infecciones y muertes por COVID-19 impulsado por la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) y financiado por el Gobierno de Canadá. El proyecto incluyó otros cinco establecimientos de salud de Honduras (dos más en el Distrito Central del departamento Francisco Morazán, uno en Atlántida y dos en Cortés), priorizados por la Secretaría de Salud del país.
El doctor Javier Almendares, Director del CIS San Miguel, dice que debido a la escasez y al racionamiento de agua en Tegucigalpa, y problemas de infraestructura, “el abastecimiento de agua era muy pobre” y algunos lugares clave del centro llevaban “casi 13 años sin tener agua”, lo que los obligaba a intentar solventar el problema almacenando el recurso, aunque insuficiente, en tanques, pilas y barriles.
Después del apoyo que tuvimos de la OPS – afirma Almendares - esto dio un giro de 180 grados y ahora no tenemos necesidad de buscar adónde ir a lavar nuestro equipo ni de salir de la clínica (espacio donde se brinda la consulta médica) para ir a lavarnos las manos con agua y jabón, y tenemos agua las 24 horas del día”.
Las mejoras en el centro de salud permitieron ampliar en 5.000 litros adicionales la capacidad de almacenamiento de agua, rehabilitar y reparar el tanque elevado, restaurar el abastecimiento e instalar 14 lavamanos nuevos en los lugares de atención a pacientes.
“La remodelación fue una bendición para nosotros y para los pacientes”, subraya María Verónica Cerrato Alabarda, jefa de Odontología del CIS San Miguel. “Eliminamos los recipientes con agua y ya tenemos agua potable en las llaves, con lo que comenzamos a trabajar con más comodidad y brindamos un mejor servicio”, asegura.
Las reformas, que se llevaron a cabo durante 2021, cobraron aún más relevancia con la circulación de la COVID-19, dado que el lavado frecuente de manos con agua y jabón es una de las medidas fundamentales para prevenir esta y otras infecciones en los servicios de salud y fuera de ellos, así como para garantizar una atención segura y de calidad para todos.
“El centro también está más limpio y la gente lo reconoce”, dice su Director. Y es que, con la mayor disponibilidad de agua, el personal de aseo ya puede hacer su trabajo regularmente y sin necesidad de cargar pesados recipientes desde la pila ubicada en el patio del establecimiento.
Tanques de agua
Pero las obras no se limitaron a restablecer el agua potable, sino también a mejorar los techos para solucionar goteras, restaurar áreas de trabajo como las de vacunación y lavado de equipos, y a construir una caseta para el manejo de residuos sólidos y hospitalarios, medidas clave para proteger la salud del personal y evitar la contaminación del ambiente.
Estas mejoras en la infraestructura, en la disponibilidad de agua y, por consiguiente, en la atención, permitieron al CIS San Miguel, que atiende a una población de 105.000 personas de 33 colonias, ampliar su horario de atención. “Además de la jornada matutina, ahora tenemos jornada vespertina y de fin de semana, donde se atienden entre cinco y seis mil pacientes al mes”, dice con orgullo el doctor Almendares.
La importancia de la higiene de las manos en el cuidado de la salud es destacada a nivel mundial cada 5 de mayo a través de la campaña SALVA VIDAS: Limpia tus manos. La iniciativa busca unir a las personas en apoyo a la mejora de la higiene de las manos durante la prestación de atención de salud, una práctica que salva millones de vidas cada año. En el CIS San Miguel, sobran las razones para celebrar este día.
