Medium-sized songbird that produces one of eastern Australia’s most familiar rainforest calls. Olive brown above, with white throat patch contrasting strongly with black face, crest, and breast. Juvenile lacks white patch. Feeds on the ground, most commonly in dense vegetation of rainforest and other wet forests. Very vocal. Male sings “oooooo...doo-doo-doo–whipp!” and female responds “pew pew.” (eBird)

Heard frequently in rainforests of eastern Australia, we quickly learned the song. At O'Reilly's, they are very tame and would come to people for food. In fact, a few times they were too close to photograph, even with the 100-400mm lens. The main problem is that they love the deepest, darkest parts of the forest, so very noisy and dark originals. This photo has been significantly edited to bring out the bird from the gloom.

He was having some problems staying off the road. I had to rescue him 3 times. There was also magpies and crows nearby. He is resting on the roof of a birdhouse, probably for the evening. I will check on him in the morning.
When life overwhelms us with its demands and problems, we can find moments of tranquility and happiness in nature. Looking at a beautiful landscape we realise that happiness lies in simple pleasures.

I haven't been on Flickr for awhile. Have been battling computer problems and kitchen renovations.
The problem with bribing Cleo in order to convince her to pose for a photo is that she stays glued to the package with the treats and that makes taking photos quite difficult. I finally manages a photo but had to sacrifice her ears. :)

Après une montée sans problème, le deuxième petit, nommé l'Intrépide par mon ami Sylvain, décide d'aller rejoindre sa mère dans l'arbre en face du nid....c'est là que ça se complique et notre petit nous à fait tout un spectacle, digne du cirque du Soleil...un spectacle qui a duré une dizaine de minutes mais qui nous a semblé beaucoup plus long...en arrière plan nous voyons sa mère qui le surveille.

This is an image I likely wouldn't have posted, but after an interesting conversation with Flickr friend Flaushi & Friends on a swan she captured out on the ocean, I decided to share.
I had heard there was an owl at the lake not too far from work, so I decided to take a second trip (first trip was unsuccessful) after my shift to look for her. My daughter and faithful Border Collie, Bandit came along on the adventure.
After looking for a short time I spotted her out on the docks and walked around the shore trying to find a half decent angle to photograph her. In the meantime, a pair of mute swans swam over to see if we had brought them any goodies. I ignored them at first, since the owl had my full attention, but one of the two was quite persistent. He (or she) came right up to shore, stood up tall and was almost beak to nose with Bandit. Bandit was quite entertained and went into his usual OCD dance bouncing up and down on his hind legs and licking the ice at his feet. The swan wasn't at all phased and stretched out his long neck with an expectant look on his face. When he finally decided I had nothing for him, he swiftly ruffled his feathers and turned away from me. This was captured as he swam away glancing back with a look of disgust at my insensitivity for showing up empty handed.
Vanwege problemen tussen Venlo en Kaldenkirchen werd ik met trein 40039 (Waalhaven-Zuid - Busto Arsizio) aan de kant genomen in Helmond. Venlo en Gekkengraaf stonden vol met treinen die nog richting Duitsland moesten, dus mocht er in Helmond gewacht werden tot er plek was; reden genoeg om de 193 657 nogmaals op de foto te zetten.
Gelukkig kon al vrij snel na het maken van de foto weer richting Venlo vertrokken worden, waarbij er nog een stopje op de planning stond in Gekkengraaf.
Sa taille, sa silhouette, son allure générale le font confondre par les débutants avec une Buse variable ou une Bondrée apivore. Ce problème d'identification ne résiste pas à un examen plus minutieux. Son plumage est brun uniforme par dessus contrastant avec les parties inférieures qui sont blanches et délicatement mouchetées de brun. Sa tête large et plus sombre apparaît comme disproportionnée par rapport au reste du corps. Son envergure importante lui confère une silhouette massive en vol, reconnaissable entre toutes. Sa tête un peu semblable à celle d'un strigidé et ses iris jaunes sont très caractéristiques.
La femelle est un peu plus grande que le mâle. Les immatures ressemblent aux adultes, mais ils sont plus pâles, avec la nuque plus blanche. La gorge et la poitrine sont brun-roux clair. Le reste des parties inférieures est blanc, légèrement teinté de brun. Les yeux sont jaunes très brillants. La cire et les pattes sont gris pâle.
Le Circaète Jean-le-Blanc a un régime alimentaire exclusif. Il se nourrit de reptiles et plus particulièrement de serpents parmi lesquels ses proies préférées sont les grandes couleuvres (à collier ou d'Esculape). Une telle spécialisation est un phénomène assez rare chez les rapaces. Les serpents et les lézards sont avalés entiers si bien que l'on peut voir la queue du reptile dépasser du bec alors que l'oiseau est déjà en train de digérer la tête.
Op zaterdag 27 mei 2023 had ik een wandelafspraak met een goede (verre) vriend op de Veluwe. Omdat het weer toch wel erg goed leek en de 1700'en van de NS warschijnlijk de laatste rondjes maken momenteel, werd 's ochtends ook het spoor opgezocht in Twente. De dag werd begonnen in Oldenzaal. Daar werd een 1700 met ICB gefotografeerd. In Notter werd vervolgens een fraaie militaire trein gespot. Niet een verkeerd begin van halve spotdag.
In Notter kreeg ik de melding dat de DBC 193 300 "Das ist grün" in aantocht was met een fraaie keteltrein. Deze zou mogelijk nog op tijd door Zenderen komen en vanuit Zenderen zou ik nog op tijd richting de Veluwe kunnen rijden. Eenmaal in Zenderen werd al vrij snel duidelijk dat de trein een pad later zou rijden. Dit zou betekenen dat ik een kwartiertje later op de locatie van de wandelafspraak zou komen. Dit was uiteraard geen enkel probleem. Uiteindelijk zat de trein ook niet in het volgende pad. Dat pad was ingenomen door een fraaie gastketeltrein met dubbeltractie van HSL. Geen verkeerde trein en een kleine verrassing, maar niet de trein waar ik voor kwam. Nadat deze trein was gepasseerd en het linkersein weer op groen ging, kon ik er nog een appje achteraan gooien dat ik nog een kwartier later zou komen. Dit was ook geen probleem (de vriend bleek ergens met zijn motor zonder navigatie verdwaald te zijn), maar het zat me toch niet lekker om veel later in de auto te stappen. Gelukkig sprong het linkersein weer op rood. Er was weer een trein vanuit Almelo in aantocht. Wat was ik blij toen ik uiteindelijk de rode loc om de bocht zag komen. Daarna beni ik gelijk in de auto gesprongen en richting Veluwe gereden. Een paar minuten later had ik ook nog RFO met een graantrein kunnen pakken, maar het is niet anders.
Hier zien we de DBC 193 300 "Das ist grün" met een fraaie keteltrein richting Duitsland bij Zenderen op 27-5-2023. Uiteindelijk bleek een machinistenwissel in Almelo de oorzaak van de kleine vertraging.

Una vez llegada a esta colina, ya habíamos pasado la zona de grietas que pudimos salvar sin problemas.
Macro Mondays -- Theme "Handmade"
When this theme was announced I knew I would use a Christmas ornament. Choosing which one was a problem though for I have waaaaaay too much Christmas stuff and a lot of it is handmade. I settled on this one made of two nuts glued together then painted and dressed.
The ornament is about 2.5" tall but the portion of it shown is only about 1.5".
This gentleman was sat in a car park doing some paperwork as I passed by. His cardboard passenger caught my eye. I attracted the man's attention and indicated I was going to take a picture. As you can see, the gentleman had no problem with that......

As I was driving by this old barnyard, I noticed a few chickens hurriedly making their way across the yard to the shed. Then I spied the problem. A cocky rooster was purposely strutting toward the hens with just one thing on his mind. All I could think of was that the farmer bought a new young rooster and the hens were not pleased. I wish I could have watched what unfolded, but I was stopped in the middle of a country road (yet again). I can hear the ladies now, “We want old Mr. Doodledont back again.”

It is a real problem, is it not? How can we come to an understanding of this utterly diverse and complicated world whilst sitting in the particularity of our home? It is true that the media, from newspapers to TV and social media, offer us a daily digest of selected information. We would, I sincerely hope, critically examine these news and think for ourselves. However, even so, we would have to deal with the selective nature of the information. We never see "the whole picture". Our knowledge, even at the best of times, is necessarily fragmentary. It is absolutely important to be aware of this limitation - it is one of the virtues that make us human.
I am saying this because AI is on the march. AI has never ever left its ivory tower, it never "left home". It never made any experiences. AI has not seen anything. It does not know how to suffer. What it does is to harvest and (often illegally) exploit printed or published materials, information it has neither created nor even collected. It does not know what it does not know. And yet AI will come up with explanations and scenarios that are untroubled by any kind of self-doubt. AI does not know when it is peddling false information. It was erected by Trinity House in 1791 along with another on the cliff-top, which was demolished in 1884 before the sea could do the job, coastal erosion being a very big problem along this coast).
