For perfectly brittle and ductile materials obeying the Weibull or Gaussian distributions with the same coefficient of variation, the distances from the mean strength to 10-6 differ by cca 2:1. For quasibrittle or architectured materials such as concrete, composites, tough ceramics, rocks, ice, foams, bone or nacre, this distance can be anywhere in-between. This necessitates a new theory of strength probability distribution. The recent formulation of Gauss-Weibull statistics derived from analytical scale transitions and frequency of activation-energy controlled interatomic bond ruptures is reviewed. Then, motivated by imbricated lamellar architecture of nacre, a new probability model with alternating series and parallel links, resembling a diagonally-pulled fishnet, is developed. After the weakest-link and fiber-bundle models, it is the third model tractable analytically. It allows for a continuous transition between Gaussian and Weibull distributions, and is size-dependent. Comparisons with histograms and size-effect tests support the theory.

A survival study leads to calculate variation of survival probability of patients from time t0. We add progressively new patients in the study and, at some times, we count number of alive patients, lost patients, and deceased patients due to studied pathology.
Nevertheless, patients do not integrate simultaneously (but progressively) survival study. However calculation methods use also information supplied by patients that came early in the study, as well as lost patients.
Actuarial method calculates survival probability only at some dates, previously organized. It neglects details of the study between 2 dates of calculation. On the contrary, Kaplan-Meier's method calculates a new survival probability after each death, every information is then taken into account.
Due to its calculation way, actuarial method requires to respect a condition : that survival probability is independent from time, i.e. that survival probability is not modified by apparition, during study, of a new therapy susceptible to increase patients survival.

WHY
With the vast options that are available in the field of product designing I faced quite a challenge in deciding the topic for my thesis. I, also, wanted to make a conscious effort in selecting a topic that I could pursue professionally after my degree.
My first objective was to try something, which is relatively under-explored in Pakistan and steer clear from the run-of-the-mill ideas.
A “futuristic” theme seemed perfect because it has just that edge that I wanted in my work. Immensely experimental and completely new, it has provided me the challenge to test my creative skills as well as balancing practicality with some fun.
I have always been a technology fanatic, keeping up with the latest gadgetry, watching sci-fi films, and reading up on a lot of fiction. I also have considerable experience in filmmaking, having assisted and directed several AD Films, Art Direction, Documentaries, Short-plays, and Music videos. These experiences have enhanced my interest and given me insight in this topic and therefore I think that I will be able to do justice to it. I am also keen on continuing this work afterwards.
