The Probability Engine: Permafrost and the Last Piece of Antarctic Ice (2024) draws inspiration from studies predicting that a 1.5°C increase in global warming could trigger several global tipping points. This series of artworks envisions a machine allowing audiences to explore potential futures of climate disasters and justice. Three sculptures, 3D printed from recycled materials, form the core of this work. Additionally, an augmented reality app depicts the effects of permafrost loss and explores potential solutions. Among the envisioned futures is the melting of boreal permafrost, covering much of Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and parts of northern Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec. Scientists fear abrupt permafrost thawing, releasing huge amounts of currently frozen methane into the atmosphere. The project highlights tipping points and their consequences, such as Antarctic ice melting leading to sea-level rise. Collaborating with scientific publications, micha cárdenas and her team have created an immersive installation, making the realities of frozen landscapes and our interdependence tangible, particularly for those of us living in southern regions. The poems in the app make connections between genocide in Gaza, climate change and decolonization.

Mr. Phifer opened the year with a fun exercise in probability to get his students back into learning mode.
The Whole Lightning Bolt
Pointing a camera where a bolt had just hit has a good probability that a repeat performance is in order. It took me a second to zoom into where I thought the last strike was based on the residual image left on my retina . So I moved the camera, got it all set up just in time Flash…1,2,3,4 BOOOOM…. So not quite a mile just over the hill we call “Dobie” (don’t ask me why it’s called that).
It’s not too often I get a really large (OK, huge) bolt like this completely on the frame without cropping down a larger image. This is a full frame non-cropped image though. I couldn’t have centered it better if I knew ahead of time where it was going to be. Well I still had that ghost image from that last flash lol.
There was a whole series of storms that moved through this evening. Each had it’s own character and lighting into sunset. I worked each and every one till the lightning and lighting subsided. There were some amazing captures from this timeline . I spent over 3 hours with this storm train. That is 1000 to 1500 image stuff. This will take a while to sort it all out. I had two cameras on lightning trigger and others free handed. I can run up to three cameras but it get’s to resemble a rats nest on my truck window.

With the vast options that are available in the field of product designing I faced quite a challenge in deciding the topic for my thesis. I, also, wanted to make a conscious effort in selecting a topic that I could pursue professionally after my degree.
My first objective was to try something, which is relatively under-explored in Pakistan and steer clear from the run-of-the-mill ideas.
A “futuristic” theme seemed perfect because it has just that edge that I wanted in my work. Immensely experimental and completely new, it has provided me the challenge to test my creative skills as well as balancing practicality with some fun.
I have always been a technology fanatic, keeping up with the latest gadgetry, watching sci-fi films, and reading up on a lot of fiction. I also have considerable experience in filmmaking, having assisted and directed several AD Films, Art Direction, Documentaries, Short-plays, and Music videos. These experiences have enhanced my interest and given me insight in this topic and therefore I think that I will be able to do justice to it. I am also keen on continuing this work afterwards.

I have always been a technology fanatic, keeping up with the latest gadgetry, watching sci-fi films, and reading up on a lot of fiction. I also have considerable experience in filmmaking, having assisted and directed several AD Films, Art Direction, Documentaries, Short-plays, and Music videos. These experiences have enhanced my interest and given me insight in this topic and therefore I think that I will be able to do justice to it. I am also keen on continuing this work afterwards.
Forum was exploring practices of organising and supporting residency programmes, examining their role as hubs for inter-local and inter-cultural exchange. It gathered cultural professionals and artists from different fields of contemporary art, as well as decision-makers and experts. It provided an opportunity to discuss and critically reflect on current practices and support models, to learn from each other and to share ideas on how residency programmes can be improved in order to resonate better with current and future cultural and social dynamics. Forum aimed to contribute to the development of cultural policies that would provide an adequate support for such programmes in Croatia and other European countries that share similar challenges. Programme of the Forum consisted of working sessions, panel discussions, conversations and presentations.

I think that AI image generation is similar in many ways to photography. The camera itself handles all the fine details, but the photographer is in charge of curating the types of images that will be created.
Ultimately, it is all about maximizing the probability that something good will be created.
This is very similar to AI image generation, in terms of the skills involved and what the human does vs. what the machine does.
You can't compare AI image generation to the process of actually making these images from scratch with 3D software or paint/pencils, where the human controls every detail.
However, I think the process really is very similar to that of photography, as I made the case for above. I think that DALL-E 3 is by far the most powerful AI image generation tool currently available.
