On the back side of one of my recently received type cases there is an address label and some freight stamps from a railroad. This is enough to tell the story of this case.

The case was made by the monotype foundry Harry Løhr after WWII. In 1949 it was send to Svendborg Æskefabrik who sold it to a local printing shop - Th. Isager Bogtrykkeri. The office was established in 1949, and the colors on the address label (Royal Air Force colors) tell us that the lable/case is from the period just after WWII. The case was send by railroad to Faxe Ladeplads through the railroad company ØSJS (Øst Sjællandske Jernbaneselskab) for a cost of 2 Danish kroner – 2x100 Øre. From Faxe Ladeplads it was shipped to Svendborg. From 1949 the case was the home for a 48 pkt. Super-Grotesk Bold until I acquired it and mowed the type to another case.

Together at last!

At the 2007 Roadworks: Steamroller Printing and Street Fair, linocut prints are inked and pressed by a two ton steamroller. The finished work is auctioned off to benefit the San Francisco Center for the Book.

Went to a press check for a newsletter and got a full tour of Abbott Printing's fabulous set-up. This is the largest offset press, 4 color + Aqueous. This multi-million dollar machine prints something like 35000 large scale sheets an hour. Our 3500 item newsletter is like dessert. :)

Jennifer Horton, science librarian for Morris Library, turns on a newly acquired 3D printer, the MakerBot Replicator 2, at Morris Library Friday. Depending on the complexity of a project, a 3D printer can take anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours to produce an object. Gi Vania, the deputy director of information technology at SIU, said the printer will serve as an opportunity for students and researchers to work with cutting-edge technology on campus. A demonstration of the 3D printer takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Morris Library Rotunda. — Robert Olson | Daily Egyptian

Accession Number: SH.2009.198.4

Further Notes: Prior to the Digital Age, newspapers, books, posters, tickets, forms, and all other types of printed-paper were produced with a printing press. To form the words, moveable type was used and print blocks would be used along side to add images or decorations around the text. A print block is also known as a letterpress cut or a printing die.

History: The Patent Plumbago Crucible Company (as Morgan Crucible was originally known) was founded in 1856 in London by the Morgan brothers, when they secured a licence to sell American-built crucibles in the UK. Soon the brothers began manufacturing crucibles, not only for Englands Royal Mint but also for mints in India, France and Germany. A crucible is a heat-resistant container in which materials can be heated to very high temperatures.
