Saturday, January 31, 2015

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

5th Ave at 89th Street

New York City

Families participated in a hands-on digital workshop to create their own sculptures with 3D modeling software and printers. Using these artworks, teaching artists Joseph Weissgold and Liz Arum helped participants explore the theme of metamorphosis in Wang Jianwei: Time Temple. Families were encouraged to take creations home.

Ok. I previously trashed on PTFE because it failed on me almost immediately. Now that i am printing in PLA primarily i realized why PTFE is the first choice in extruders.

PLA is a hard plastic. As it enters the extruder it is reshaped from a 'perfect' circle to something more of a oval in shape. Not only that, but there are teeth imprinted on the filament. As this malshaped plastic enters the insulator it rubs the walls because it is no longer 3mm diameter. At its fattest the filament can be 4+ mm diameter. This means that there is a ton of friction being introduced. This was my leading cause of the filament stripping or even snapping of insulator retainer.

I decided to purchase a replacement from Makerbot and try again. Considering PLA does not operate at the higher temperatures that ABS does i thought that "Hey it shouldnt melt this time" Turns out they (I) was right. :)

The PTFE insluator withstood the test of time and trial. I printed the full set of Mendel parts. I even left it printing over night and while i was at work. I would come home to find a buttery smell, and perfect Mendel parts. If you are printing in PLA I highly recommend revisiting PTFE. PEEK was nice for ABS, but it was killing my extruder with PLA.

This is an electro printing block on a columbian press. Its is a line block of a catalogue image for the 1874 coalbrookdale catalogue it is 10inches wide (25cm). On the bed can be seen hempel quions and quoin key.

This is how I try and stay organized.

Screen printed. I wanted to try printing a rasterized picture and this one couldn't have gone better.

Although the colour palette of the prints is rather limited, often up to 20 printing runs are needed for one print (one run for each colour). The artists' greatest challenge lies in the subtle skin colours.
