This is a photograph from the sixth annual Donadea 50KM Ultramarathon which was held in Donadea Forest, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday 14th February 2015 at 10:00. The race was also an International Association of Ultrarunners Silver Label Event and the Athletics Association of Ireland (AAI) National 50KM Championships. There were 178 finishers.

Donadea Forest Park is situated in rural north Kildare and is approximately 640 acres in size. The amenities at the forest include good walking trails, a diversity of natural habitats, a walled stream, a large natural lake, and the ruins of Donadea castle. The Park is a designated National Heritage Area. The basic designation for wildlife is the Natural Heritage Area (NHA). This is an area considered important for the habitats present or which holds species of plants and animals whose habitat needs protection. It is a special occasion to allow the 50KM to be held in this environment.

The explaination is very simple.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

This one pull common press appears to be the oldest printing press in Denmark.
On the head of the press there is engraved: 1812 P – properly the year of manufacturing and the initial of the person who manufactured the press.
The press has belonged to the Viborg Stiftbogtrykkerie (The printing office of the Diocese of Viborg)
The bed is measuring 70x54 cm and the platen 53,5x42 cm.
Please remark the text on the printed label on the head of the press – Ein Spänngen raus, ein Spänngen nein, Das ist der Drucker ihr Latein.
This is the printing block that the previous halftones were printed from (see accompanying photos). The plate is attached to a wood block to make it type high. It's difficult to see the positive image when looking at this reverse one but I am pleased with the results.
Printing and papermaking provided occupational mobility for men, but roles allocated to women were more restrictive. Apart from brief periods (1860 to 1909 and during both World wars), it was practically unheard of for women to be employed within the main print house or papermill machine house.
As in this image, In printing firms, most worked in the bindery where their role was to collate, fold and hand sew books. In papermills women worked mainly in the ‘salle’ or overhauling department where paper was quality checked before being sent to customers. Women workers did not undergo the same intensive apprenticeship given to male counterparts. They learned on the job, often employed straight from school. Hours were long and wages low in comparison to men. Females were often paid piece rate; receiving a bonus depending on the number of items they completed per week.
As female labour was often used to undercut male wages, the response frequently was to exclude them from traditiona male spheres of work. In 1909 female compositors were banned from entry into the trade by an agreement between the union and the employers. Female unions were encouraged where there was no threat to the male workforce.

These printing plates were made by the stereotype process from paper molds, called flongs, in which the flong was placed into a casting form and filled with liquid type metal. They appear to have been created for stamps and coin advertisements. These flat stereotypes would not have gone on a newspaper press. Instead, they would be mounted to the right height and locked down with a full page of a newspaper in flat form, from which yet another flong was made, and that flong was then cast as a curved stereotyped for the high-speed rotary presses used in newspaper printing. These all look to be from the early 1970s, just before letterpress/relief printing was in its dying days, used increasingly only by newspapers before they switched to modern offset, a massive expense.

Being the oldest on a foundation art course was very daunting, especially as all the "bright" young things had fantastic drawing skills, which alas I am sadly lacking in. However once we started playing with dyes, I started to have fun!! Hope you like the results.

one of my letterpress blocks, printed on a classmate's handmade cotton rag paper, using my adana 8 x 5! the paper was made in that little size, and we lined it up perfectly for printing using masking tape, test prints & luck. so pleased with how this worked out.
