Handpress made by I.H. Hyttemeier in Copenhagen, Denmark

Bed size 51 x 71 cm.

Locksmith and watchmaker Johann Heinrich Hyttemeier was born in Bremen in 1804. In 1826 he moved to Copenhagen, where he established a Locksmith Workshop in 1831. In 1836 he made his fist Iron Handpress (the handpresses Hyttemeier made were all constructed with the Hagar toggle). The following year, 1837, he made the first Danish flat bed cylinder – a copy of the Napier Press. After some financial troubles he moved to Finland in 1849, where he died in 1866.

The bed, ribs and the barrel.

I found this at a used book store in Minneapolis. The copyright says 1940. I'm thinking of using it for a screen printing series on scouting. A good friend of mine made it to Eagle Scout (which is kind of like becoming a black belt in Dungeons and Dragons as I understand).

Printing an 80% tornado with .2mm layer height. Some weirdness with the extrusion but it's working quite well.

Riddles Court is the original locatiion of Pillans and Wilson. This printing firm is one of the oldest printing firms in Edinburgh. James Pillans, an apprentice of William Smellie, opened his own shop in Riddle's Court around 1775. While there his son Hugh entered the firm as a partner and the firm became J. Pillans & Son. A separate printing firm had been run by his other son John, but these two firms merged in 1827 when they became H & J Pillans. Soon after this the firm moved to James's Court. When this building was destroyed in 1857 the brothers re-established their business at another address in James's Court when they remained until 1877 when they moved to Thistle Street. In 1886 the firm became H & J Pillans and Wilson with the appointment of Mr W Scott Wilson as a major partner. The firm moved to another address in Thistle Street where they remained until 1919 when they moved to Newington. The firm was bought by Colorgraphic (An English based firm) in 1987 and is now part of the Ormolu Group with a base in Leith Walk in Edinburgh

Description: Wooden printing block showing an image of a bridge across a river with people crossing.

Accession Number: SH.2009.213

Further Notes: Prior to the Digital Age, newspapers, books, posters, tickets, forms, and all other types of printed-paper were produced with a printing press. To form the words, moveable type was used and print blocks would be used along side to add images or decorations around the text. A print block is also known as a letterpress cut or a printing die.

Steamroller!

Printing!

Together at last!

At the 2007 Roadworks: Steamroller Printing and Street Fair, linocut prints are inked and pressed by a two ton steamroller. The finished work is auctioned off to benefit the San Francisco Center for the Book.

The Printing room, kept at a constant temp and humidity.

Successful prototype on 20.12.2011, a little tweaking required. Was inspired to create one of these as something like this exists with a clone brand; alternatively a Kimono Girl/Flamenco Dancer fan could be modded, if you don't mind having a hand larger than five cards.

I forgot how much I like doing this!

I can't wait to show you these all finished!!
