I decided to post this uncropped version.
I like the way the forest bows to the bloom.
I was quite surprised to find such a perfect flower outdoors so late in the year. But this is Gainesville. Some parts of the city can tolerate the cold with a good protection of canopy and other areas are open to the elements.
This was taken on an overcast day with a bit of moisture.

Brugmansia is a genus of seven species of flowering plants in the family Solanaceae, native to subtropical regions of South America, along the Andes from Colombia to northern Chile, and also in southeastern Brazil. They are known as Angel's Trumpets, sharing that name with the closely related genus Datura. Brugmansia are long-lived, woody trees or bushes, with pendulous, not erect, flowers, that have no spines on their fruit. Datura species are herbaceous bushes with erect (not pendulous) flowers, and most have spines on their fruit.

Every year in the weeks preceeding Halloween comes the big debate - what to wear. With Paige this becomes an event unto itself which involves careful planning, extensive travel and countless hours of sewing. The first year she was fairy. The second year a tiger. This year she's a "pretty pink pricess".
It didn't actually start out that way. One of Paige's favorite television shows over the past year has been The Doodlebops. We thought we'd go for a full family thing where Marna was Moe Doodle, I was Rooney Doodle, and Paige was Dee Dee Doodle. It turns out that designing those costumes takes a considerable amount of work. In fact getting even one just right is tough.
When Marna made the trek to Omaha, NE to visit her mom and assemble Paige's costume, I believe she had every intention of returning with Dee Dee. Playing off the wig she had purchased however, they landed on one heck of a fancy pink princess costume. Bravo!
This weekend we went to my dad's house to show off Paige's new digs. Grandma Linda was able to make the appearance too. Paige carved pumpkins with family, and then slipped away for the ol' presto-change-o. She's ready for the week ahead. Sadly, I'll be on the road (again) this week and will have to miss out on sugar-amped Taz version of Paige. Just be sure to save some candy for dad!
is a Royal (Ball) python (Python Regius). Royal pythons are natives of West Africa. They are among the most docile and gentle snakes in the world and rarely exceed four feet in length. "Princess" was bred and hatched in my house in August, 1997. Amazingly, she's now twelve years old. And remember, pythons and boa constrictors have been on the earth for over 50 million years... Also notice her heat sensing pits on her lips and face. They are like infrared sensors and she can sense the heat from prey animals (mice and rats and gerbils) from 30 feet away at night. Claudia is a very pretty princess. She is gentil and sweet too. But at night her nose starts to grow, her hair changes a bit from glowing orange to dirty grey, and one big hairy wart appears on her pretty face. Who can save her? Where is her prince who can break this curse that rests upon her?
This doll is not for sale, I promised her to my daughter. I made this doll for the holiday softie awards. Isn't she creepy-cute?

The ship's elevator system took some getting used to, as there wasn't a way to go from the lowest to the highest deck on one elevator. The glass elevator just runs between the public decks where the restaurants, bars and shops are located, and then you needed either another elevator or to take the stairs to get to the passenger decks and the buffet. By the end of the cruise, we had learned our way around pretty well.
I took this photo just after I had re-boarded the Coral Princess in Ketchikan, shortly before our departure for Vancouver. I guess some people were still in town, which helps explain the lack of people in this otherwise busy area. Or, maybe the others were thinking about what was on my mind at the time... get something to eat!
I met a floating princess head on one of my late night graveyard constitutionals.
I am uncertain if it is Maria Teresa Luisa of Savoy, Princess of Lamballe because when her mouth moved no sound came out. We still had a nice walk and I told her about my hopes and fears.
I think she was glad to not have to listen about the backbiting politics of court.
