They predicted bad weather, and They did not lie: We awoke on Three Kings Day to find the streets and sidewalks all iced and snowy. The snow fell all day long, so Jeremy and I hunkered down inside where it was warm and dry.

Predictive Art Bot is an algorithm that uses current discourse as a basis to create concepts for artistic projects and, at times, prophesize absurd future trajectories for art. Algorithms are now widely used in different fields to make predictions using data analysis, statistical analysis, and pattern recognition for applications including the purchasing behavior of particular groups, global market developments and even potential crimes. In contrast, the Predictive Art Bot is a specialist in making art forecasts, published daily on Twitter, which are meant to expand the limited human imagination with new, non-human perspectives. As a parody of transhumanist prophecies, the Predictive Art Bot liberates artists from the constraints of creativity and develops ideas not yet implemented or conceived by humans. - Inke Arns

As predicted, it was 45 and wet when we hit Matthiessen State Park on Thursday. It migrated to the low thirties throughout the day but the park was relatively deserted and most of the footing was pretty solid. Most of the footing.

Here, my (freezing) mother and dad, stand before the Giant's Bathtub down in the Dells part of the park. This was the first of three snaps. Mom looked progressively colder in each shot so we went with this one...

On this day, heavy rains were predicted to begin and last through the next. The clouds were heavy and we used our rain ponchos off and on because of sprinkles. Later, during the evening and night there were flash floods in the park, but only nice sounding rain to us after so long without rain. It was the result of what they call Monsoon patterns mixed with the remnants of a hurricane in the Pacific. Locals said they almost never see rain at this time of year. It rained through much of the night and into the next afternoon.

Scottish Munros: Actual and Predicted Route Times (excluded routes)

The previous graph presents a correlation between actual and predicted route times using a modified Naismith's Rule, with the effective walking pace being derived from data accumulated from 72 qualifying Munro routes (see text for background). Routes done under winter conditions, those involving a lot of scrambling, and two-day walks were excluded. In this graph, the excluded data are superimposed on the previous graph but with the qualifying data points removed for clarity. As might be expected, a significant proportion of both the winter and scrambling routes fall outside of the 25% upper margin, but this is not the case for the two-day walks. The reason this last category was excluded is that it seemed likely that the additional weight of the camping equipment would have had a noticeable impact on route times; however, the average walking pace for these routes was only slightly below the standard rate (4.1km/hr as opposed to 4.38km/hr), and so I guess I must have been fitter than I thought!

The routes falling furthest out-of-bounds (one from each category) are as follows:

Route 110: Buachaille Etive Mor (Section 3) (photo)

Route 102: Am Basteir - Bruach na Frithe (Section 17) (photo)

Route 134 (day 2): Luinne Bheinn - Meall Buidhe - Ladhar Bheinn (Section 10) (photo)

The tardy pace set during the winter ascent of Buachaille Etive Mor was largely due to the "wrong" type of snow, which extended right down to the roadside. All that needs to be said about Am Basteir and Bruach na Frithe is that they're Cuillin Munros, and so Naismith's Rule is largely irrelevant (although incurring a minor knee injury during a fall from the Bad Step was an additional factor in this case!). Cumulative fatigue probably accounted for my shoddy performance during the second day of the Knoydart route, as the previous day had involved a six hour drive from Carlisle, followed by a tough 9-hour walk over the first two Munros, followed by a sleepless night spent bivvying in Choire Odhair!

Note: My Flickr Munro photos are grouped into the SMC guidebook Sections and not individual routes. The easiest way to see any additional photos taken during the routes listed above is to follow the link back to the relevant Section (from the "This photo also appears in" link), where the photos are ordered sequentially.

As predicted, I regret staying up so late. The alarm went off, I turned on the radio and promptly fell back to sleep for 45 minutes. Shower and out the door into the bitter cold. Only 3 degrees this morning. My hands were freezing the entire drive, with gloves. Work. I was back teaching my lunch time yoga class. It refreshes and engergizes me. I can feel it does the same for my colleagues. I wish I could do it every day. Driving home I noticed it was nearly 5 and still somewhat light out. I'm happy for that. Into the kitchen. The bitter cold had me wanting soup so I whipped up a simple tomato soup with just a dash of cream. A citrus vinagrette, some washed greens for on the side. Then I sat myself down at the computer, hooked up the printer and wrote some letters to my nieces. I love sending them mail. Back out into the cold for my massage. Mia is a godsend. She knows just how to loosen up all the knots in my shoulders. Home again. I tell myself I'm just going to watch one episode of Scandal and then to bed early. But I get sucked into a second episode. I've already missed my bed time so I might as well catch up on Words with Friends.

While predicting where the Cranes will spend the night is always an uncertain undertaking, we have found that this shallow lake just off the tour-route road through this refuge is a good spot ot watch. The Cranes often seek additional protection offered by the water... it makes it more difficult for predators to sneak up on the roosting birds. While sometimes this lake draws a blank on such activity, we have often been rewarded by scenes such as this where the incoming birds are silhouetted against a grorious western sky. These conditions allow for a fast enough shutter speed to result in a sharp image. The show lasts for at least a half hour, and the bird continue their arrivals long after it's too dark for photography.

How to predict the future with big data: Thomas Nørmark at TEDxVennelystBlvd

In his talk Thomas Nørmark introduces us into the secret mechanisms of future predictions. This has nothing to do with fortune telling but patterns in big data. He illustrates how big data allows us to look into the future and even predict our individual future lives. He shows why you should see this inevitable development as an opportunity rather than a threat.

Thomas Nørmark is the head of innovation at itelligence Nordic. With his team he works on solutions using predictive analysis. He developed a “time machine” consisting of systems and solutions for predicting the future using social media data, object recognition and predictive analysis algorithms. One of his recent programs is to predict the movement of fish along Australia's coast. He hold a Master's degree in Computer Science from Aarhus University and gained extensive experience as SAP software consultant. When he was only nine years old, Thomas ran eight marathons and won bronze medal at The National Chess Championship.

On the 4th & 5th October 2016, leading international thinkers in the areas of Data, Predictive Models, Technology and Decision making gathered at the RDS, Dublin, for Predict 2016. The speakers, many of whom I managed to photograph, discussed the latest progress in Predictive Modelling and its future – from Data to Software and Hardware technology, plus Predictive Modelling methods and the best examples of Data-driven Decision-making.

The organisers kindly invited me to the Predict event at the RDS but as I arrived a bit early I took few backstage or behind the scenes shots. In case your are interested I used a Sony A7RM2 coupled with a Sony 29-135 full frame lens. The lens does attract a lot of attention which does allow me to to have interesting people … volunteers, students from Brazil, photographers etc.

They predicted that there might be up to 10,000 people show up for the start of the race. I don't think nearly that many came, but maybe three to four thousand. In any case, it looked like over half of those there had some gray hair. Apparently not an event for the younger generations. This is just my speculation, but I think that for those under the age of thirty, all family automobiles have looked sort of alike for all their lives (boring). The appearance of mom or dad's new car did little to inspire the kids who rode in them.

Now I wish I would have bought a program book, since it would have made identification of the vehicles a lot easier.

I'll change the title and the this description if I find out more details about this car.

www.greatrace.com

"The Great Race" is an annual event that started in 1983 and consists of classic cars (some more classic and/or classy than others) driving a specific route across the United States. The first race started at Knott’s Berry Farm California to Indianapolis Indiana. This year the race was to run along Highway 66 from Kirkwood to Santa Monica California.

From what I understand the routes are planned in such a way that the cars can avoid having to get on an Interstate highway.
