Fish travel in schools because they are programmed by evolution to know that safety lies in numbers.

Should a hungry PREDATOR approach the group, the first line of defense begins with the many confusing silvery flashes or mesmerizing stripes that make it difficult to focus on a single fish.

He has been around for centuries, and learned to respect humanity's warriors.

These are but a few of the little alligators older relatives that he should fear as he attempts to reach adulthood! The bends in Horsepen Bayou where he was sunning has the heaviest concentration of alligators within the Armand/Horsepen bayou estuary system! He be wise to keep an extremely low profile! These photos were taken on Horsepen Bayou!

I just worked out where the chaps who made the Predator series of films got their inspiration from :)

These little guys, well our ones are certainly not little anymore they are getting quite large, look absolutely freakish when you get up close and have a proper look :) The other really neat thing about them is that whilst they have a standard insect compound eye, they have what looks like a eye ball on it.. and it moves, follows you around :)

Imagine being the size of a ant and coming across one of these in the bushes !

"Its blood was on the leaves..."

"If it bleeds, we can kill it."

This Red Fox ran down this Squirrel so fast, and killed him in less than a second.

I heard his final scream, and saw the whole thing ..... c r a z y ~

If you want to know exactly what happened....at first, a bunch of coots were running and flying away over to near I was. Then, I saw the Red Fox running after them. When he was unsuccessful, he went to the waters edge and took a drink. Then he went into the high piles of tules and weeds looking around for something. I could not see him, but you could hear him in there scraping around. Then, that Squirrel jumped out of the tall weeds about 10 feet from me. I noticed he was not looking at me. Then, he just takes off running down the access road. Oh he might be safe, I thought, then about 5 or more seconds later, the Red Fox just catapults out of the tall weeds and takes off like a rocket. It was impressive to watch how his speed increased so fast. It looked like he hit 45, 50 miles per hr in a distance of about 30 yards. If the Squirrel would have keep running across the trail to the bay rocks he would have lived, but he decided to take his chances in the iceplants, and the Fox nailed him. I guess if theres a lesson in this, it could be that, to really reason swiftly in important quick unexpected decisions we may need to make, because not making the right one, could cost us our life.

Wolves have been a love of mine since childhood. They are such beautiful creatures. So close to our furry companions and yet so lethal.

Story behind the photograph:

I captured this image from Srimangal, a small town on the southeast region of Bangladesh. I was walking down on an aisle of a pond and saw this Egret meditating. Initially I was interested on taking a portrait, but it turned out that this expert hunter caught a frog and quickly gulped it whole. The frog (common toad) tried to wrestle for a while but was almost helpless against the egret.

Successfull predator taking care of his next meal, some maintenance awaiting, too.

An alpha-predator lurks in the algae, as an adult alligator sticks up its snout. This view was taken within the safety of ZooTampa, but Florida residents are generally aware that these native animals can be encountered in any big patch of water.
