YCNH juvenile practicing shading in order to see into the water like his parents were doing. He never actually shaded any part of the actual water when we were there, but he’s getting his techniques down! Marblehead neck, Massachusetts

Having a go at flying shots , quite pleased with this one !! Am really enjoying playing with the settings on the new camera , deleting loads i am really good at that x

Another day of practicing panning shots. First time attempting this on motorcycles during a trackday at the TT circuit in Assen The Netherlands. Given the fact that motorcycles are smaller then cars you have an advantage and a disadvantage. Smaller in length makes the deviation in focus front to back smaller when not shooting perpendicular to the axis of movement. But smaller also means more focal length is needed which makes it harder. This one was shot at 500mm handheld with 1/80sec shutterspeed.

My first go with PS CC. Maybe it's because it's 4am, but I'm pretty proud of what I managed ^^

The Geese are practicing their V formation as part of their fall ritual. The sounds of them squawking away as they fly overhead in large flocks is a sure sign the season is changing. I watched these geese take off together and I was impressed at how close they were beside each other. They were able to co-ordinate the movement of their wings so they did not bump into each other.

Let's do some exercise with Cranked and Escalated with a view to summer!

We went back and found the fledglings again. This chick was flapping its wings and taking short flights from branch to branch.

We revisited the Balancing Rocks Project along the Ottawa River last weekend. I finally spent some time playing with my new Big Stopper filter. I've actually had it for about 4 months but I haven't really had the time to see how it works. The balancing rocks were crowded with new sculptures which made it harder to isolate a few. The wind was heavier than I would have liked considering I was working with glass while standing on a rock ledge. It also made the water a bit choppy. However, I did try this shot for effect and I am pleased with what the filter can do. There are a few imperfections in this image.( I think I got a bit of spray on the lens.) However, I was encouraged to try more shots on a calmer day. The rocks will be taken down soon though for the winter.

Practice Makes Perfect - A couple weeks ago, I observed a cooperative immature Red-tailed Hawk on a family hike. I didn't get the shots I wanted that day, but figured I'd try again.

My buddy and I were treated to almost an hour of great passes by this hawk during a windy morning as it practiced hunting and chased a group of Turkey Vultures around. Was a great opportunity to practice bird in flight (BIF) techniques!

For the past two days, I've been practicing taking pictures of the Sun to prepare myself for the upcoming Solar Eclipse.

In NY State, the Eclipse will be partial! I just hope that the weather will be favorable.

The spot on the upper right of the sun's surface is actually a sunspot!

Sunspots are temporary phenomena on the Sun's atmosphere that appear as spots darker than the surrounding areas. They are regions of reduced surface temperature caused by concentration of magnetic field flux that inhibit convection.

Sunspots usually appear in pairs of opposite magnetic polarity. Their number varies according to the approximately 11-year solar cycle.
