Kanji is one of the 3 oldest writing systems in Japan. It is however the most complex. Japanese Kanji symbols are actually taken from China, and like Chinese characters each symbol doesn’t actually represent a letter of the alphabet. Instead, each kanji symbol represents a word or a sound. In this respect they’re somewhat similar to hieroglyphics.

count the bricks - 6 million were used for the construction of the power station in the 1930s/40s and for the redevelopment project an additional 1.5 million new bricks have been made, by the same company that made the original ones.

This was the sunrise that greeted me at Conowingo Dam this morning. This is looking down the Susquehanna River below the dam. Eagles would be in action here shortly ... in fact while taking this shot an eagle swooped down and picked up a fish about 100 feet down the frame or more and only about 10 feet from the rocky shore. The light was too dark at this time for even the other photographers there to catch it. It did not even register in this long exposure :))
A power pole across the street from St. Joseph's Church in the little village of Theilman, MN.

Noah, all fluffed up. Over the past couple of weeks we have had two baby lizards find their way into the house... to Noah's delight. It took me two hours to catch one of them! Both were returned to the "wild" with no injuries. Noah has been keeping a better watch at the back door hoping that another little toy will make it into the house. :O

After overextending themselves acquiring Milwaukee Road, Soo Line established a wholly-owned division called Lake States Transportation Division on February 10, 1986, to operate its mostly former Soo Line trackage in Wisconsin and prepare it for sale. With this move, older locomotives and some leased power began to be much more common on these lines. On March 22, 1987, a southbound Soo Line (Lake States) freight climbs to the top of Byron Hill at Byron, Wisconsin, powered by two Soo EMD GP9s and a leased Conrail EMD GP38.

Yesterday, a friend and fellow photographer had a ride over into Yorkshire to photograph Ferrybridge Power Station, the power station is due to close on the 31st March, so needed to get this shot.
Yesterday while mowing the lawn I finished listening to "When Breath Becomes Air" for the second time. Nothing like bawling your eyes out while walking behind a power mower. The book is such a beautiful testament to figuring out how to live a meaningful life. Paul Kalanathi, the author, was a brilliant man and I am grateful he found meaning and drive to share his story. Start today and examine your life, where do you find meaning and purpose? No one can define your values for you, this takes work, time, and self-reflection. It's like the quote “The trouble is, you think you have time” from Jack Kornfield's Buddha's Little Instruction Book we skitter away our time mindlessly. Today I slowed down, breathed, sipped tea and enjoyed the sunlight in the crisp morning air.
