Corvatsch powder day, Engadin, Swiss Alps

Founded in 1844 by Plymouth alderman George Frean, the Plymouth and Dartmoor Gunpowder Company built a gunpowder mill in the middle of Dartmoor to supply the many mines and quarries in the area that needed explosives. Powder Mills was operational by 1846 and comprised at least 18 buildings involved in the production and storage of gunpowder. Power was provided by the Cherrybrook which ran through the site, and leats from the nearby East Dart river. Production continued until 1897 when the site closed as a result of a slump in mining and competition from dynamite.

We are having lots of snow these days, and Shyla seemed to swim through it rather than run at times, ending up with a snow face!

Well, I did it. Pretty sure that in some places it might be more fray check than fabric, but I was able to sew up the holes. (It came with the shoes and gloves)

After sewing the seams and fray checking the seams I soaked the dress to see if I could get rid of the yellowing. (no agitation--literally just sat there) I think most of it came out.

Well, I've gone and done it again. Janet has banned me from the kitchen for the next week because I snorted the powder sugar she was planning to use on our apple turnovers. The shame is real.

Question. Does this photo qualify as a leading lines shot?

We had a photoshoot in AP Photo today. Here's Day 1's results. Hopefully will have a day two tomorrow!

The Powder Mills were built in 1844, a factory for making gunpowder which was built on the open moor, not far from Postbridge. Gunpowder was needed for the tin mines and granite quarries then in operation on the moor. The buildings were widely spaced from one another for safety and the mechanical power for grinding ("incorporating") the powder was derived from waterwheels driven by a leat.

Now known as "Powdermills" or "Powder Mills", there are extensive remains of this factory still visible. Two chimneys still stand and the walls of the two sturdily-built incorporating mills with central waterwheels survive well: they were built with substantial walls but flimsy roofs so that in the event of an explosion, the force of the blast would be directed safely upwards. The ruins of a number of ancillary buildings also survive. A proving mortar—a type of small cannon used to gauge the strength of the gunpowder—used by the factory still lies by the side of the road.

Another shot with Danielle Turner from Model Mayhem. This image is actually

a shot between shots. The main image of the model was caught after we had just done a take and she relaxed and looked down and I snapped a couple of shots. I think took powder from 2 other images and created this final composite of the 3 shots. Let me know how you think I did in the comments. Press the letter "L" to see on black.

Strobist: this was a mix of strobe and Flourescent lights. 1 Profoto acute b 600r in a 3'x4 softbox directly overhead. 2 1000watt lowell lights 1 camera right and 1 camera left about 3ft from the model.1 profoto acute b 600r behind and camera left shooting thru the powder and creating a highlight on the right side of the face. I also had a silver reflector under the models face to soften the shadows. Triggered by pocketwizards. I also recommend a damp cloth to with your gear down every so often because the powder gets on everything!

Facts of Pueraria Mirifica

The herb Pueraria Mirifica (grown and used in Thailand for over 100 years) is rich in isoflavones, providing female hormone-like effects and significant breast enhancement for 90% of all women. This magic herb contains chemicals called phytoestrogens - natural compounds which mimic the effects of the female sex hormone estrogen.

The isoflavone content of Pueraria Mirifica is about 40 times greater than soybeans. Since isoflavone is similar in molecular structure to hormones produced in the body, it is absorbed gently.

Studies indicate additional beneficial effects on menstrual abnormalities (PMS), improvement of the hair, skin, cardiac diseases, and anti-depression. Nature, an English science magazine, published that Pueraria Mirifica also contained puerine (not found in isoflavone from soybeans) which gives Pueraria its breast-enhancing effect.

Recommended intake: 2 cookies a day with plenty intake of water and bite slowly will get you a nice body. (You can eat more but not too much per day.) Those who are pregnant or having menstration are not recommended to consume.)

As it turns out, the best rhythm was to have littleboxestheater drive the mechanics of the powder and for me to take the photo. In a grand irony, they lit the scene about the same way I would (a gridded stripbox to each side) but all of the ideas and mechanics behind the powder is their brain, not mine. Meanwhile, mylittleecho was off to the side helping with the powder.
