From the air at about 1500', listed as the No 3 top beach in world and having been there I can see and feel why.
Info: The sand is minute powder-size grains of quartz and has been assayed at 99.89% pure, well above the minimum requirement for glass-making and suitable for the finest glass for optical lenses for binoculars etc. Its origin is not known definitely but geologists say it does not have a local origin as rocks of the Whitsunday area are quartz-poor. They think the most likely explanation is that it is the result of a longshore drift system which brings sand from the south along the Queensland coast, very evident in the Gold Coast/Fraser Island area. The Whitehaven sand is so pure it indicates that during the drift all heavy mineral sands and other impurities have been winnowed out leaving the quartz sand.
The powder sand is so pure you can and I did clean your jewellry in it. Wow.

This shoot was inspired by the work of Darren McDonald and Solve Sundsbo. I conducted this shoot in an open field so that i had lots of space to throw the powder into the wind onto my model. I styled her all in white to create a blank canvas for the paint so that the patterns created just by using the wind.
Picked up the parts from the powder coaters this morning, quite pleased with the finish and the colour!

The arrival of the Hindu New Year (2026) is celebrated with abandon. Besides dancing and other performances, it is common to spray and smear each other with (washable) paint, powder and water. All in good community fun. I took these photos in Amsterdam-Bijlmer, where many (Surinam) Hindu's live.
