In mid-January, Total Heliski saw our first industry-specific tour depart from all places, Las Vegas. As the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) came to a close, our members said their goodbyes to the throes of the Sin City, and their hectic meeting schedules. They were whisked by direct flight up to the tour base near Revelstoke, in BC Canada which was covered by a blanket of metre deep fresh powder snow.

I found this unusual lichen sitting on the forest floor throughout Rocky Bayou State Park in Niceville, Florida. I checked with an expert, and learned that it is Cladonia Evansii, commonly known as Powder Puff Lichen. It grows on the forest floor rather than on tree limbs, and has a spongy texture.

During the Civil War, as a constant source of fresh water, the Lost River Cave was a popular encampment for both Confederate and Federal forces moving up and down the Nashville-Louisville Pike. The Army of the Cumberland briefly encamped here after the fighting in Kentucky before returning to Nashville. Three powder houses, designed to safely store gunpowder, were built in the Lost River Valley during this conflict, though it is unknown who built them and when.
