33 inches of freshly mashed potatoes brought the masses to Powder Tuesday at Alpental.
This line waited until 10:15 to load chair 1 due to the high avy danger on Denny Mountain and the surrounding area. The wait was not worth it - all the powder got cooked my the raising temps and Mother Nature threw everyone a curveball.

In mid-January, Total Heliski saw our first industry-specific tour depart from all places, Las Vegas. As the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) came to a close, our members said their goodbyes to the throes of the Sin City, and their hectic meeting schedules. They were whisked by direct flight up to the tour base near Revelstoke, in BC Canada which was covered by a blanket of metre deep fresh powder snow.

The arrival of the Hindu New Year (2026) is celebrated with abandon. Besides dancing and other performances, it is common to spray and smear each other with (washable) paint, powder and water. All in good community fun. I took these photos in Amsterdam-Bijlmer, where many (Surinam) Hindu's live.

Every day at Niseko there was a fresh dump of soft, cold, fluffy powder, especially on the slopes... whew..
So without to0 much trouble you can wander out amongst the trees and ski some wonderful snow. You and every powder hungry skier..
Over the years my skis have changed from long narrow planks to shorter and shorter skies with tapers from front to middle, that allow us hacks to carve up the groomed slopes.. great control and ease of use in the turns.. (They even want us to ski with our legs apart... dang that... I have spent too much time trying to ski with them together, and I aint going to change it now...)
Well, they don't have them here, well they do, just nobody hires them here, everybody skies (except for those degenerate boarders that is, but then they don't count) on long fat planks, almost parallel from front to end, very reminiscent of my skies of days long gone by, but only fatter.. they are for getting into that soft powder and trying to stay on top of it... and they work..
Oh what joy they were, when I gave up being afraid of that powder... (In australia we call powder leg breaker due to it being mostly wet and heavy, a real slog to turn in) here the powder was dry light and puffy, it might be upto your knees, but just lean in and turn and it blows away..
I think I enjoyed this stuff.... wonder if I should book again for next year... hmmmm

Another insect I was able to sneak up on next to the walkway along the Loop 610 service road and just north of Buffalo Bayou, on the west side of the freeway. Not a bright, but a powder or soft blue color and I could not get in front to get it's face in the pic.

this little one had been walking ahead with auntie when she turned round to check that mum was still following, mum had detoured and was having a super dust bath, I missed the action due to tall heather and short stature. It was good to be out on the forest early, the horses in general seeming to have a "lazy" day, the warm wind of today oh so different from the ice and snow of the winter
On Saturday the Guardian newspaper gave away a free wall chart illustrating Endangered Species of the UK. Most of these plants and animals have smashing names like Natterjack Toad, Angel Shark and Pink Waxcap, that will aid them in capturing the public’s imagination and hopefully help their survival. However, the butterfly above, whose Latin name is Maculinea arion, has the very boring common name of Large Blue Butterfly. I believe it needs a rebrand if it is to compete in the survival stakes. So I propose that from now on it starts calling itself the Powder Blue Lovely – who wouldn’t want to save that?
There are 943 species listed as Endangered on the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and some of them aren’t even as lucky as the Powder Blue Lovely (the insect formerly know as the Large Blue Butterfly) – they haven’t even got common names! The Guardian and Natural England are offering people the chance to change this and give these endangered species a name, you can find out more here: www.guardian.co.uk/environment/series/name-a-species
