Swan lake in a modern version.

During confrontations, the adult (usually the male but sometimes the female) pursues its rival with the head and neck resting on the body, wings raised and the bill pointing forward and close to the neck.

This posture is characteristic of aggressive interactions in the mute swan.

.....and he's on his way.

In our garden.

I have always found cormorants to be interesting birds. I like their body forms, the way they fly, and the postures that they assume. I once found a dead one floating in the lake and was stunned by the beauty of their feathers.

On bird island, where I made this image, the government tried to reduce the numbers of cormorants by destroying their eggs and shooting adults. It didn't work! There are 10 times more cormorants on the island now.

A team of experts from the University of Exeter have shown that mimicking the v-shaped posture adopted by Cabbage Whites to heat up their flight muscles before take-off, can raise the amount of solar power by nearly 50 per cent.

The secret appears to be the angle that the butterflies hold their wings, approximately 17 degrees from horizontal. It could even improve the effectiveness of sunbathing.

Cabbage White butterflies are known to take flight before other butterflies on cloudy days – which limit how quickly the insects can use the energy from the sun to heat their flight muscles.

This ability is thought to be due to the v-shaped posturing, known as reflectance basking, they adopt to maximise the concentration of solar energy, which allows for flight.

He had focused on the male of Onychogomphus costae and for the moment he curved his abdomen with this curious posture and I deduce that he is cleaning some dirt with his right hind leg.

Seen on this friendly Goose at a local Nature Reserve,

This new plant in our garden seemed dormant for some time, then it began to produce one passion flower per week and now it gives several at a time.

The bees seem unable to understand the intricate structure of the flowers which is perhaps why the plant has produced no fruit.
