The meerkat is a small diurnal mammal living in the arid desert environments of southwest Africa. It is a member of the Herpestidae family. Often nicknamed "the sentry of the desert", it owes this nickname to the posture it takes when it stands up on its 2 back legs. In this position, it observes the surroundings and watches for the slightest danger. One individual is more particularly affiliated with this task: the lookout! Posted high up, it scans the sky for birds of prey and other predators and warns its fellows by shouting or barking if it spots a threat.

Yellow-crowned Night-Heron (Nyctanassa violacea). Japanese Garden, Hermann Park, Houston, Texas. Too much sake, maybe?
This Great Horned owl starts to take a defensive posture, apparently towards a potential threat in the distance.
Seen around sunset in North Walnut Creek. Map location is approximate within 1 mile.

He had focused on the male of Onychogomphus costae and for the moment he curved his abdomen with this curious posture and I deduce that he is cleaning some dirt with his right hind leg.

I caught these two Arizona Woodpeckers posturing to each other on opposite sides of the tree. Not sure if it's two males or a male and a female. Looks like a crazy mirrored image!
(I assure you it's not a composite)

The Eastern Bluebird is a small thrush with a big, rounded head, large eye, plump body, and alert posture. The wings are long, but the tail and legs are fairly short. The bill is short and straight.
Male Eastern Bluebirds are vivid, deep blue above and rusty or brick-red on the throat and breast. Blue in birds always depends on the light, and males often look plain gray-brown from a distance. Females are grayish above with bluish wings and tail, and a subdued orange-brown breast.
This new plant in our garden seemed dormant for some time, then it began to produce one passion flower per week and now it gives several at a time.
The bees seem unable to understand the intricate structure of the flowers which is perhaps why the plant has produced no fruit.
Looking close... on Friday! tres/three
Sometimes it seems that Swallows never stop to perch, but that was not the case for this Barn Swallow at Huntley Meadows Park. It perched right on the boardwalk railing and didn't seem to mind me being there at all.
