After a couple of wonderful nights in Seattle we got the train up to Vancouver in Canada. Unfortunately we arrived to rain - the first rain of the holiday. We'd heard rumours that the weather was going to change to record highs and glorious sun but at that moment we didn't believe it.

We went over to Stanley Park and went to the Vancouver Aquarium on the first day. It was great fun!

I snapped this little fellow stuck to the side of one of the tanks on his own.

This is a shot of an ordinary pedestrian underpass in Munich - very ugly and lonesome, but I think that it offers nevertheless some potential for an interesting shot. Although ugly it's good fun to try to give such places an interesting look. The dark figure in the shot is actually myself and I just used the tripod + timer, no copy and paste here.

It seems that this cub found a cool position to lie on the (fake) rock!

The forest did not echo.

It sealed.

Between the trees,

two presences took position;

not facing each other,

but facing what must not pass.

They were not mirrors.

They were refusals.

Their surfaces carried the memory of collapse,

layered inward,

as if geometry had learned shame

and folded itself to avoid recognition.

No light entered freely.

It hesitated, fractured,

returned altered.

The trees leaned away imperceptibly.

Moss withdrew its attention.

Even the soil compressed its breath,

aware that this clearing was no longer neutral ground.

This was not symmetry.

It was jurisdiction.

The guardians did not watch the forest; they watched possibility.

They filtered intention.

They weighed footsteps before they occurred.

They erased futures gently,

without noise, without cruelty.

Between them,

nothing stood; and that nothing was deliberate.

To cross here

would require the abandonment of narrative,

the surrender of memory as proof,

the consent to become unrecorded.

No one crossed.

The forest resumed its silence

only after the passage forgot

it had ever been imagined.

Awesome cars accelerating in Brazil in unique videos ? Go to our channel :

Exotcs Cars Brazil

Bet this doesn’t make much sense- right?

So the saga - we are three people needing the use of one car. The owner of said car (me) is short and getting shorter every year. The other principal driver is short-ish but not that short. The other thing you need to know is that my beloved Honda Fit is older, is a stick shift and I adore it

So when the other principal driver uses said vehicle, she adjusts the seat and mirrors to work for her. She does try to return things back but sometimes she’s *way* off - the seat back so far I can’t reach the clutch without a stretching exercise that would please my physical therapist’s heart. And sometimes the seat is so far forward that you’d have to be a munchkin or a five year old to even get into the car.

In an effort to be helpful and solution-based, I took a trusty silver Sharpie marker out and marked where I thought the optimal seating position might be for me. Although it’s not perfect, it seems to be about right. Of course I plumb forgot to tell the other principal driver that I’d created this helpful mark, but I finally did think to send her a text showing it yesterday.

So does anybody know of a reliable good used not too old Toyota Corolla for sale that’s been well-maintained, is an automatic, has got low-ish mileage and has been carefully driven by, say, a little old lady only to church/temple/mosque on Sundays/Saturdays or bingo or shopping? We’re in the market!!

Hello to all of my friends out there. 2013 was kind of a photography drought for me as conditions for when I was out shooting were not always conducive to me capturing a shot I liked. I could not even post a fireworks shot from the Space Needle for 2014 as 2013 ended and 2014 started with a big fog bank obscuring the Space Needle from view.

Well there was no obscuring of the view yesterday! I had checked the radar befor leaving home and saw a nice thin cloud bank pushing in from the south and west, that is perfect for capturing the colors of our Winter sunrises. It was super cold, below freezing and frosty on the roads as I drove to Kerry Park. The park was also covered in a layer of frost. Of course I send warm thoughts to everyone in the Midwest and East. They would not mind thirty degrees, as that would be warm for them!

This is a combination of three exposures (-3,-1, 1) merged and tonemapped in Photomatix. I shot at 400 ISO and at f/11. I removed a dust spec in Photoshop as well as did a little light "Dodge and Burn." I pulled back the saturation of the colors too...yes the sky was intense and brilliant. I added a little sharpening and noise removal in Lightroom.

Thank you for all of the views, comments and faves. I appreciate your support. The rain has moved in, so now it will be time to clean out the archives!

SZINTIA PHOTOGRAPHY on Facebook

Helmsley Castle is a medieval castle situated in the market town of Helmsley, North Yorkshire. The castle, constructed in wood around 1120, was built by Walter l'Espec. It is positioned on a rocky outcrop overlooking the River Rye. The castle at is only 1.9 miles (3 km) from Rievaulx Abbey, and Walter l'Espec granted the land for the abbey.

Walter was childless, and on his death in 1154 the castle passed to his sister Adelina, who had married Peter de Roos. In 1186 Robert de Ros, son of Everard de Ros, began work on converting the castle to stone. He built two main towers, the round corner towers and the main gateway on the south side of the castle. He died in 1227, granting the castle to his older son William who lived there from 1227 to 1258.

Helmsley Castle remained in the possession of the de Roos family until 1478 when Edmund de Roos sold it to Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who later became Richard III. Richard did nothing to the castle, staying instead at Middleham Castle. After Richard's death at the Battle of Bosworth, Helmsley Castle was restored to Edmund de Roos by Henry VII.

During the English Civil War, the castle was besieged by Sir Thomas Fairfax, in 1644. Sir Jordan Crosland held it for the king for three months before surrendering. Parliament ordered the castle to be slighted and much of the walls, gates and part of the east tower were destroyed. However the mansion was spared. The castle had by this time been inherited by George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham who married Mary, daughter of Thomas Fairfax in 1657.

After his death in 1687 the castle was sold to Charles Duncombe in 1695. He was a banker and politician who was knighted in 1699 and became Lord Mayor of London in 1708. William Wakefield, a protégé of Sir John Vanbrugh, was hired to build a country house at Duncombe Park, overlooking the castle, and the castle was to decay, forming a picturesque backdrop for the Duncombe Park estate, and was sketched by the great J. M. W. Turner.

Is it because of what happened in 1989 that the tian'an men square is full of security forces? Or maybe just a way to show that the people here has no reason to feel in danger? I would better consider the first option but I guess the official reason won't match with my guess...

Il vento freddo e pungente ci ha aiutato ad avere tutta per noi una delle piazze più trafficate dell'Umbria, la piazza della Basilica Inferiore di San Francesco ad Assisi

(anche l'ora ha fatto la sua parte)

It was finally hoisted back into position this week after being in storage at the back of town over winter, spring and Covid-19 lockdown.

Wells Next The Sea is slowly returning to normal.

The statue is by Rachael Long and was purchased for £15,000 by the town following a previous exhibition here. It commemorates the many horses which were used to launch the former Wells lifeboat and stands opposite the former lifeboat house which is now the harbour master's office.

A characteristic of the border collie is the herding eye. It’s been said that “when working, this breed will usually be seen in the crouched position, with their alert eyes fixed on the job in hand. The ‘hypnotic’ eye characteristic is probably more defined in the Border Collie than any other breed and it is this quality which makes them so superb in herding sheep, using their eyes to guide a herd without the need to nip or bark.”

And that “most people admire a dog that works with its head low to the ground, with its hindquarters high and its tail tucked between its hind legs. They can run as fast as the wind, yet stop in an instant or switch directions without stopping. They don’t take their eyes off their sheep. Their intense gaze is focused on the stock, willing them to obey, to go where the dog directs them, to stop if the dog blocks their path. The stock aren’t rushed or afraid, but they certainly respect the dog. A good Border Collie’s obsession is its livestock, and this is as it should be.”

A very recognizable symbol of the Pennsylvania Railroad remains in service today in a location far away from a PRR served location. Union Switch & Signal was able to sell a couple of the H-2 pot signals to the Chicago & Illinois Midland for use with crossing warning indicators. This one is at Shops in Springfield, IL at the North Grand Ave crossing. Another one I recall was in Pekin, IL. ETTS may come one day when North Grand becomes a bridge over the NS and I&M diamond.

The pot is displaying the stop indication. Clear is displayed once the crossing warning devices have been activated. This signal does not appear to convey authority across the interlocking.

IN ENGLISH BELOW THE LINE

============================================

This is part of the Ebro battlefield (1938), in Southern Catalonia.

The last and dramatic combats of the battle took place in a vital position to protect the retreat of the Republican Army: "Los Raimats", north of La Fatarella. Sensing the paramount importance of this position, the Republicans conscientiously fortified it, with many trenches connecting eight concrete bunkers, most armed with machine guns but at least one with an anti-tank gun. The final assault began on November 14: the fascist troops occupied La Fatarella and continued towards Raimats with many tanks. German Commander Gustav Trippe died in the first assault. The defenders of the XV Brigade lost some positions (hill 554, were this bunker stands), but held on, while the rest of the Republican Army crossed the Ebro by Flix and Riba-roja.

On 15th November the attack increased, with much artillery and aviation bombing. T26 tanks fired directly at the bunkers' embrasures, killing the defenders. This allowed the infantry to assault the last defenses of Hill 562, killing almost all the defenders. Riba-roja and Flix fell on the 16th, but the Ebro army had not been annihilated.

This bunker, blown up after the war to take advantage of the iron (as in most bunkers at the time), is part of the first line of Los Raimats, which fell on the 14th.

The Battle of the Ebro (July 25 - November 16, 1938) was the most important and deadlier of the Spanish Civil War. There are those who also consider it the most decisive, but I think that unfortunately the war was already decided long before, at least since the breaking of the front of Aragon on March 9 of the same year.

The battle began with the greatest offensive made by the Republican forces, when they crossed the river Ebro between Mequinensa and Amposta (especially between Riba-roja and Miravet), and advanced to the line La Pobla de Massaluca -Vilalba dels Arcs -Gandesa - Serra de Pandols . But in just 48 hours, the dazzling advance was stopped short. Then Franco decided to crush the republican forces hill by hill (with massive artillery and bomber barrages), in a battle of attrition identical to the First World War for which the Republicans had no resources or alternative, especially with the river behind them. The main assaults, which lasted from August 10 to October 29, were concentrated in a very small and devastated area: the triangle Vertex Gaeta - Corbera - Camposines.

Finally, a final offensive on October 30 occupied the ridge of the Serra de Cavalls, making the entire Republican bridgehead unsustainable, which managed, however, to withdraw in an orderly manner until November 16. But the damage was already done, and there were no forces left for a proper defense of Catalonia, which fell three months later. Then, fascist darkness.
