The city of Jacksonville is perfectly positioned along the Atlantic Ocean in northeast Florida. This "River City by the Sea" boasts more than 20 miles of wide and uncrowded beaches, close to 40 miles of the tranquil Intracoastal Waterway canal, and the longest stretch of the beautiful St. Johns River. On land, Jacksonville is home to the largest urban park system in the nation, with 10 state and national parks. Its authentic cuisine, thriving craft-beer scene and fun and cosmopolitan nightlife make Jacksonville a unique destination.

Several comments have noted the strange position of the Woodpecker. He had just come out of the nesting hole and for some reason wanted to take another look at the nest. I caught him in mid-pivot.
Cascade Mountains – Jackson County – Oregon - USA
“Reminiscent of a troupe of wide-eyed clowns, Acorn Woodpeckers live in large groups in western oak woodlands. Their social lives are endlessly fascinating: they store thousands of acorns each year by jamming them into specially made holes in trees. A group member is always on alert to guard the hoard from thieves, while others race through the trees giving parrotlike waka-waka calls. Their breeding behavior is equally complicated, with multiple males and females combining efforts to raise young in a single nest….. Acorn Woodpeckers are medium-sized woodpeckers with straight, spike-like bills and stiff, wedge-shaped tails used for support as the birds cling to tree trunks….. These woodpeckers live in oak and mixed oak-conifer forests on slopes and mountains in the Southwest and West Coast. They’re tolerant of humans, and you can find them in towns where there are acorns and suitable places to store them.”

I haven't been really active these days, I'm sorry!!!
This is my first attempt with infrared and sea. It gives an effect similar to the 10 stops ND, plus some nice tonal shifts if you include greens, such as I did in this one.
Thanx a lot for the great appreciation comments for my previous upload!
The shot
This was shot one the little promontory you can see on my last upload.

Now for the real deal. A Metra inbound rolls under the PRR Position Lights at CP Morgan Street, preparing to enter the canyon of skyscrapers that make up Chicago's massive skyline. This was probably one of the most successful shots that resulted from today's expedition into the city.

Corfe Castle occupies a key strategic position on a chalk mound in the Purbeck hills, just inland from the Dorset coastline.
There has been a castle on the site since 900AD, but the oldest surviving parts of the current structure date back the 11th century when a stone hall and inner bailey wall were built just after 1066, but the castle was captured and destroyed by explosives after a siege during the English Civil War in 1645.
Following the destruction of the castle, the owners chose not to rebuild it but instead built a new house at their other nearby estate in Kingston Lacy, leaving the castle abandoned. The locals took advantage of all the unwanted masonry, windows, doors and other items to build houses of their own in the village!
The Afsluitdijk provides a road link between the provinces of Friesland and North Holland. Since North Holland was part of Vesting Holland ("Fortress Holland"), the national redoubt of the Netherlands at the time, and control of the sluices in the Afsluitdijk was necessary for planned defensive inundations in case of a military invasion, Kornwerderzand was considered strategically important by the Dutch government. From 1931 onwards, fortifications consisting of seventeen casemates and three bunkers were constructed. The position was manned with approximately 220 troops in 1939.
During the German invasion of the Netherlands in World War II, the Kornwerderzand position was defended by Dutch troops. On May 13 and May 14, 1940, the fortifications were attacked by the German first Cavalry Division, while the Luftwaffe attacked supporting Dutch naval units. The German troops, initially lacking support by heavy artillery, were unable to take the position. The fortifications also withstood attacks by dive bombers. The next day the Dutch military in the Netherlands (except for the province of Zealand) surrendered, and the battle ended with the surrender of the position.
In 1943, the occupying German military improved the defenses by building three additional bunkers.
Nowadays, some of the fortifications can be visited as part of the Kazemattenmuseum ("casemate museum").

New Years Day 2009 at False Kiva in Utah's Canyonlands. As I imagine is usual at this spot, we had the place entirely to ourselves.
For fear of breaking our necks in the dark on the climb back up, we left just as the sun dipped below the horizon. It developed into one of the most spectacular sunsets I've seen. However, I don't regret not getting the False Kiva in the sunset so much, as really this is about the ancestral Puebloan structure, not the sunset - probably best not to get the two mixed up too much.
I'll be posting more shots from this trip over at my web-site.
'Antique Furniture 101'
To distinguish whether a chair with turned legs is an antique simply position a caliper over one of the turnings and close until each end touches the wood. Remove the caliper in the same open position it is in and then place it 90 degrees on the same turning.
Did your notice that there was a gap?
Wood looses its moisture and shrinks. It takes a good 100 years for for a caliper to show a gap if used in the manner presented here.
*For this photo composition I used:
My circa 1820 Country American Tiger Maple Side Chair.
For a background a rosewood sewing box from about the same period.
The brass caliper is also antique.
I love the hardness and clatter of wood this age! All the years come a talking...

The right side is a mirror. I knew that, so i took the shot in a way the mirror would look nice. At least that's what i thought when i stood there with my cam. In the original image there is an ugly wall on the right side.

We sure did get some dramatic skies at Point Reyes last weekend. This was definitely one of the best coastal sunsets I've seen; between the amazing colors and huge clouds we got some pretty epic skies!
It took me a while to decide on which shot to post from this viewpoint, as I took a ton of photos from this location while the sun was going down. I tried a few different processing techniques on the various shots but I think this one captured the drama the best. This is actually a blend of two exposures by hand in Photoshop. It was a lot of work but I think it came out really well.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ~ WWT London Wetland Centre is a wetland reserve managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in the Barnes area of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, by Barn Elms.
In 2002 the Centre was recognized as a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest', a tribute to the positive environmental impact on the local area. Many birds have now made their home in the Centre that cannot be found anywhere else in London. The Centre was first opened in 2000, the London Wetlands Centre is host to regular lectures and events concerned with preserving Britain’s wetland animals.
The centre occupies more than 100 acres (40 hectares) of land which was formerly occupied by several small reservoirs. These were converted into a wide range of wetland features and habitats before the centre opened in May 2000. It was the first urban project of its kind in the United Kingdom. It became a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) in 2002 and supports nationally significant numbers of gadwall and shoveler duck.
Other wild birds that can be found on the reserve include: great bittern, pintail, lapwing, water rail, ring-necked parakeet, sparrowhawk, sand martin, kingfisher, little grebe and great crested grebe.
It was featured on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the London area, with focus on the region's parakeets, in an episode presented by Bill Oddie.
This juvenile Bald Eagle was totally exposed as he was surveying the lake for a meal. Having one in this position you can get a really good feel for the size of the wing span. You also get a great view of the colors and markings of this beautiful raptor.
