Vienna’s position along a busy trade route made it especially susceptible to outbreaks of bubonic plague. The lack of drainage and sewerage systems, the crowded housing and the warehouses piled high with often rat-infested goods was a mixture so lethal to public health that the disease was referred to as the Viennese Death. Vienna was struck by plague in 1679, an epidemic which also carried off thousands in Prague and Dresden and killed half the population of Halle.
According to legend, the folk song Oh du Lieber Augustin is all about Marx Augustin, a musician who gets drunk, passes out, and is inadvertently thrown into a plague-pit; when he wakes up, he plays his bagpipes to attract attention and is saved, becoming a symbol of hope! The reality though was that 73,000 perished in Vienna in 1679. Emperor Leopold I fled the city, vowing to erect a monument once the danger was over. The commission for a Holy Trinity Column was awarded to an artist at Leopold’s court, Paul Strudel.
I positioned the hammer specifically to catch the sunlight so that it would have a hard shine; it manifested more as a strong glow, but the object appears to be substantial, which is something I want. Because of the angle of the light, the original photo had a large droopy shadow of the hammerhead. I had to use a layer mask in Photoshop to get rid of it, one of the most frustrating photo projects I've done so far.
Seems I never uploaded photos I took when Melissa and I went to the Virginia Signal Meet in 2019. These are on the NS Shenandoah Line which I hear are slowly being replaced now. This is Arcadia Control Points taken on 4/28/2019.
The Starting Positions - Blue got first Activation, so placed right at the front of the building. Red tried to keep out of Interference range (1 ruler unit), which forced Yellow and Green to squeeze in behind it. If there hand't been enough room on the rooftop, Frames could have started on the table (Ground Level).
