Sapphire Pool, one of the prettiest in Yellowstone, settled down to its placid former self after a violent episode in 1959. The Hebgen Lake earthquake turned the placid clear pool into a powerful, muddy geyser for years afterward. T. Scott Bryan writes,

"No spring in Yellowstone was more greatly affected by the 1959 earthquake than Sapphire. The day after the shocks the crater was filled with muddy water, constantly boiling with vigor. Four weeks later Sapphire began having tremendous eruptions. Fully 125 high and almost equally as wide, these eruptions were among the most powerful ever known in Yellowstone. At first, the intervals were as short as two hours, and each play lasted five minutes."

The eruptions enlarged the pool by several feet, destroying the geyserite "biscuits" around its crater that had given Biscuit Basin its name. Over time the eruptions became less intense and frequent. By 1971 all the muddiness was gone, and Sapphire again regained its pristine aqua color, as you see it today.

Change is the only constant in Yellowstone's hot springs. Just 100 yards to the east of Sapphire Pool (out of frame to the right of the photo) is an area where explosions have created and altered springs and geysers in the decades following 1902. Explosions as recent as 2006-2008 threw rocks and debris as far as 50 feet. Remnants of these explosions are visible from the boardwalk as you walk to Sapphire Pool. Geologists are keeping an eye on the area (see next photo of Black Opal Pool).

Big Girl has been declared water safe. Meaning she can enter the pool from anywhere, at any time, and we know she will find her way to an edge or the stairs without assistance. (But not that she can be in or near the water without supervision.) Little Girl is not doing so well.

The pool in our building is now being heated, and julie was so excited she braved the chilly breeze Tuesday afternoon and took a quick dip! I'll wait until it gets a tad warmer...

This is the pool at the Alila in Ubud. When you swim in it, the infinity edge makes it look like this pool falls right off into the gorge and river below.

Our pool is now closed for maintenance but we can use the up market sister hotel next door's pool. They have a water slide! :S.I'll not be here long as the journey home starts in a few hours. :(

Just barely splashdown!

Lorin had just as much fun - if not more - at the hotel pool.

Pool Party - July, 1988 - Moline, IL

Rinnie hangs on to Meredith and Lauren. Or are Meredith and Lauren hanging on to Rinnie? Rinnie was one of my college roommates. She lives in FL but was in Chattanooga to visit.

OK, I know there's no bus, but to go along with a picture posted a couple of days ago of some of the Pooles Coachways fleet standing outdoors, here's a shot of their garage at Alsagers Bank. The large 'car port' type open structure with the quite imposing facade led to a workshop which could be locked off by roller doors.

Their Bedford CF 'pick up' can be seen on the left. In spite of the latter's faults, real or percieved, the type certainly had good all round visibility for the driver.

Whilst the front portion of the garage has definitely been demolished, the rearmost shed still remains so far as I'm aware.

Yesterday the Watersedge Kayak Club explored the headwaters of Broad Creek then paddled downstream into the mighty Conowingo main pool. it was a truly awesome paddle.
