Common Gum Tree Shield Bug (Poecilometis patruelis)
I had a look to see if the Mantis was around today, I found this Shield Bug instead.
Dragonfly in the garden using the seedhead of a Nigella plant as his viewpoint to hunt. It was interesting to him and another dragonfly seemingly take turns to attack small flies.
Marjorie concentrates hard as she's seen something to photograph in the sand. I was happy also to catch her reflection on the wet beach.
Australian Reed Warbler (Acrocephalus australis)
I just managed to get a shot before it disappeared. At the Heathdale - Glen Orden Wetlands.

These little Brown Headed Nuthatches are super fast. They really love the stealthy approach when it comes to raiding the feeders.
There will often be other birds at the feeders and the Nuthatches will wait for an opening, fly in, grab a seed and take off almost without any of the other birds realizing what has happened.

The sunshine today brought a few Wasps out.
Happy Beautiful Bug Butt Thursday!
I might try something like this shot again. But don't wait up. Doing that stuff will drive you crazy...

Meet Tahlia. A beautiful and alluring model who dressed and played Audrey Hepburn for this portrait shoot. Well done Tahlia 👏👏 🔥

After heading to the local park in search of the Great White Egret, I came across this fella. While not as large as their cousins, this Green Heron was actually one of beefiest I've see for a long while. With the help of some cattails, I was able to get pretty close while he was busy preening himself. It's amazing how much they can extend themselves as usually they just look like a football when sitting still. What a beautiful bird, enjoy!
A green heron poised and ready to strike to at a small fish. There was a nest with three chicks about 10-15 feet above and to the right of where this parent was fishing - no doubt getting goodies for its hungry and rapidly growing brood. There was also a rather large alligator trolling the waters, waiting for an unsuspecting prey to venture too close to those hungry jaws. The alligator made its presence known by bellowing loudly almost every time I went to view the progress of the nests, eggs and chicks.

This White-Breasted nuthatch was perched on a nearby tree branch and ready to dive more food from my backyard bird food tray.
In the Countrywood/Bancroft neighborhood of Walnut Creek, California.
While hard to see in this photo, Pearl is poised on top of a bookshelf in the upper left corner, and Sundae is wondering if her sister plans to jump down to attack her (playfully). The two of them invent elaborate mock combat scenarios that are fun to watch. Great buddies!

Didn’t expect so much motion blur at 1/2000th. Shows what I know.

This is a photo I took over the summer while in D.C. I always really liked the way the proboscis looked all curled and back-lit, but I never posted it because of the way the antenna was cut off on the left ... I could never get a decent crop out of it.
Well, I stumbled across it again yesterday and thought I'd give it a try to finish off that antenna and extend the flowers and background myself. I think it came out pretty well! You wouldn't have known, if I hadn't told you ... right? ;)
Happy Friday everyone!!
A gorgeous adult male Lowland Copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) enacting a spirited threat display towards a perceived threat. He awaits further stimuli prior to delivering a strike. Taken on a Canon EOS 5D Mark 3 DSLR coupled to a vintage Leica R Series Leitz Wetzlar Macro Elmar 100/4 lens with a third party adapter from Leitax. A 13mm EOS EF extension tube incorporated. Hand-held @ f.4 with reflected side-lighting utilised.
I really love my Leitz..
