Parthenos sylvia, the clipper, is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in south and southeast Asia, mostly in forested areas. The clipper is a fast-flying butterfly and has a habit of flying with its wings flapping stiffly between the horizontal position and a few degrees below the horizontal. It may glide between spurts of flapping.

I took a walk after lunch along Skeleton Creek to see what I could see. The 'semi-resident' White-faced Heron was hunting for lunch.

This Bee Balm, variety 'Fireball', is new for my garden. I haven't even planted it yet, but based on its reception by the hummingbirds, it's a keeper!

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Kingfisher (m), West Lothian.

Composed by the roadside he weighed a level branch down knowing he was beautiful the clear white sweep of him

tufted ears and round orange head he blinked his eyes, rested iron claws easy let us see enough of him

and find undercurrents lifted slowly wafted wide wings poised in the even air figure skated on the breeze

allowed himself to fall a small space gracefully and rolled the lazy evening forward and backward over the hump in the road

he hung on those sunken eyes swung over the field hedge poured down from that low sky was gone…..

Juvenile egretta picata, pied heron. Captured at Fogg dam 2024.

No, there are no Duck Predators in the water basin for Lilies in the Amsterdam Botanical Garden. That's not what our Duckling fears. Downy is just the last of nine taking to the water - fearful of being left all alone - following Mother Duck, who's hatched them here in the Hortus.

But one supposes these huge leaves of Euryale ferox, Prickly Water-Lily, in their native Southeast Asia (even in semi-tropical Russia) would be a good sanctuary for Ducklings. The name Euryale is for a female Gorgon of Antiquity with fearsome (ferox) burning thorns for hair. Look at the inset and you'll be able to see Plant's thorns both on the leaf top and the magnificently purple underside. I got stuck by one myself, and would have loved to show you a thorn all blood-encrusted... but I didn't bleed. I read somewhere that these Lilies developed those thorns as a protection against leaf-munching predators no doubt with a taste for Duckling too. I'm a bit sceptical, but it's a nice story.

Goldfinch at the ready

Another shot from last week - I like the gentle curve of the plant that the butterfly had perched on.

Always after the elusive Kingfisher shot...but they are mostly so far away that the resulting image is iffy due to the mamooth crop!! But hey ho...one day. It's just always a joy to see them regardless 😍

A juvenile Yellow-crowned Night Heron watches his posture.

A Yellow Dung fly. Happy Fly Day Friday everyone! Have a great weekend.

A railway photographer stands in position at Spray Point half way along the sea wall waiting for the Westbury to St Blazey RHTT.

There is a storm blowing hard from the east generating a large amount of spray which is suspended in the air. As the sun bursts through the clouds everything is momentarily back lit. Fortunately i turned around just at the right time.

I watched this Grey Heron fishing for some time & the first thing that struck me about it was how incredibly patient they are. Standing stock-still for minutes at a time, poised like this & not striking until exactly the right moment.

I have always loved the styling of any car with multiple headlights, so I just love this 8 headlight set up on the front of the Bugatti Chiron parked in our street and looking like it is ready to take off!

A 1/18th scale model Bugatti Chiron by Bburago parked in the street under our bare silver birch tree in winter. A long shot taken to focus on those wonderful headlights and that famous Bugatti grille and badge.

The name Chiron is in honour of Loius Chiron, a French racing driver who won many grand prix races back in the 1920s and 1930s for Bugatti. It is also the name of a centaur in Greek mythology.

I'm pretty sure this little frog was posing just for me :-)

I'll give the frog series a rest now and move on to other subjects, but I expect I'll have a few more eventually since they're still hanging out in the garden. With any luck, next summer I'll have even more. I'm trying to figure out if I can create a space for them to reproduce right there in my small garden.

This owl was reacting to the sound of another owl hooting close by. Then he flew off after it into the trees. Wondering if these were siblings as a friend saw Great Grey owlets in this area in the summer.

A little egret (egretta garzetta) poised on a high bank overlooking a lake in Phang Nga, Thailand. The bird was staring intently into the shallow water at the edge of the lake, no doubt hoping to spot a passing fish.

Blue-fronted Dancer (Argia apicalis)

Santee State Park, South Carolina, U.S.A.

The Blue-fronted Dancer earns its name from its bouncy flight, a trait that distinguishes it from other similar damselflies like bluets. Interestingly, its adult life is incredibly brief—typically lasting only 7 or 8 days! They play a vital ecological role by controlling populations of other damselflies and smaller insects.
