I've seen pictures of this tunnel before, but didn't realize it was as close as it was to me. I say close when it's about an hour and twenty minute drive from my house. I found a brief history of the tunnel on the "canaltrust.org" website and thought it pretty much sums it up pretty nicely.
From the canaltrust.org website:
First constructed in the 1860s, the tunnel was enlarged in 1902 to accommodate larger trains. In the early 1960s, the eastbound track was moved to the outside of the tunnel to accommodate still larger trains. This was done by blasting the rocks on the old alignment outside the tunnel, enlarging the road bed, and dumping the excavation rocks into the canal bed, where they remain today.

Amtrak P029-13 threads it's way through the interlocking at Point Of Rocks, MD, March 13, 2018. The clouds this day were both interesting and annoying. Just 30 seconds before the train arrived, a nice sized cloud had parked itself in front of the sun but fortunately chose to move on as the engineer called the signal at East Rocks. P42 #184 is painted in one of the "heritage schemes" that Amtrak adopted for a few locomotives to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2011.

At least I'm assuming this parent was feeding the chicks. They must have been pretty small as I never saw them.

Sunset on the shores of Crescent Beach in Siesta Key at an area known as "Point-of-Rocks."
Point-of-Rocks is a natural outcropping of flat, smooth beach rock located at the far southern end of Crescent Beach. It can be thought of as a natural boundary between Crescent Beach and Turtle Beach. The rocks begin on the beach and extend out into the water for about 300 feet.

This isn't the standard shot of the classic station at Point of Rocks Maryland, but one from the perspective of an underutilized leg of the wye. There wasn't much traffic using this leg of the wye at the time and weeds were beginning to claim the road bed, but it wasn't out of service.

Woke up from my nap this afternoon and decided to try and catch the sunset at this place that www.flickr.com/photos/51097281@N00 had told me about.
I had visited Mckee Beshers WMA this a.m. and their Sunflower fields are not in full bloom yet. Probably next week. They are also not in their usual fields and I had a tough time finding them!

I have long wanted to visit the classic station at Point of Rocks, Maryland. I finally got the chance on March 14, 2012 after spending most of the day at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum Annex at Dulles Airport. This westbound from Baltimore is one of several freights we saw that beautiful late afternoon.
