Washburn Point is a scenic overlook in Yosemite National Park, located along the Glacier Point Road. Offering breathtaking panoramic views, it is slightly higher than the more famous Glacier Point. From Washburn Point, visitors can enjoy spectacular vistas of Yosemite Valley, including iconic landmarks such as Half Dome, Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall, and the Sierra Nevada range. The viewpoint is particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset, when the changing light paints the landscape in vivid colors. Washburn Point is a must-visit for those seeking to experience the grandeur and beauty of Yosemite from a serene and less crowded vantage point.

The closest point to Hawaii from the Continental United States, Point Arena was a geographically important location for navigation. Hence in 1870 a brick-and-mortar lighthouse was built atop Point Arena. This was damaged beyond repair by the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake and for its replacement, the United States Lighthouse Service specified that it needed to withstand another earthquake. It eventually contracted with a San Francisco company specializing in smokestacks, accounting for its long, thin design. The 1908 Point Arena Lighthouse is thus the first lighthouse built of reinforced concrete.

The lighthouse is 35m tall, tied with the Pigeon Point Lighthouse as the tallest lighthouse on the Pacific Coast. It has a 1st Order Fresnel Lens, made up of 666 glass prisms focused toward three sets of double bullseyes, providing two flashes every six seconds. It was automated in 1977.

I’m standing at the halfway point where I stop while on my morning walk. It’s every bit of a half mile from home. I’m a sucker for gates and this one is at the place where I would see my old friend Chewy, the llama. Chewy died a couple of years ago and I sure miss seeing his furry face. He always stopped to look at me whenever I went by and stopped. It was his way of recognizing me. As I turned to the southeast I caught sight of this view of the tree with the sun rising behind it. This time of year the sun tilts on its axis. Two months ago I wouldn’t have gotten this shot…….. by the way, there’s a buzzard sitting on a branch on the upper right watching me. I was about 100 yards from this point and saw them take flight and leave their roost. By the time I got to the top of the hill this one had decided he wanted to check me out. There was another hanging near by. I know what they were saying to another. They were saying “That ol’ geezer just walked a half mile uphill and downhill and he looks tuckered out! Let’s keep an eye on him, he might just keel over and we’ll get first dibs!” …… fooled them though. Maybe next time, guys.

Stand in the same spot where Captain Benjamin Bonneville and his expedition party overlooked the valley he named Les Bois, site of the city that today bears the same name Boise. The view takes in the entire Treasure Valley. The site is also an access point for the Oregon Trail and a place to hike, picnic, and view wildlife. A mountain bike trail to Lucky Peak Reservoir also runs nearby.
