Nash Point Lighthouse was designed and built by

Joseph Nelson being completed in 1832 to mark the

hazardous sandbanks off Nash Point, overlooking

the Bristol Channel. This followed the wrecking of

the passenger steamer Frolic on these sands in 1831,

with a heavy loss of life.

Two circular towers were built, each with massive walls and

a stone gallery. The eastern, or high lighthouse being 37

metres high and the western or low lighthouse 25 metres

high. Placed 302 metres apart they provided leading lights

to indicate safe passage past the sandbanks. The high

light was painted with black and white stripes and the low

light was white. In those days both towers showed a fixed

light which was either red or white depending on the

direction from which a vessel approached. The red sector

marked the Nash Sands.

The low light was abandoned circa 1925 and the high

light was modernised and painted white. In place of the

fixed light a new first order catadioptric lens was installed

which gave a white and red group flashing, this was

removed in the automation of the station and replaced

with a rotating optic. Nash Point Lighthouse was the last

manned lighthouse in Wales. It was automated in 1998

with the keepers leaving for the last time on the 5 August.

The lighthouse is now monitored and controlled from the

Planning Centre at Trinity House in Harwich, Essex.

The Point Perpendicular Lighthouse was established in 1899 to replace the inaccurately placed Cape St George Lighthouse.

The original 1860 lighthouse had been built in the wrong position due to inadequate supervision by the authorities of the day. It was not visible to the northern approach at Jervis Bay and failed to warn of offshore reefs.

Even though when the error was realised it was intended to show a light at Cape St George only as a temporary measure it was not until 1898, over 30 years later, that work began on its replacement on the northern side of the entrance to the bay.

This tower is believed to be a "first" in New South Wales. It is erected on a flat concrete base and is the first tower to be constructed of concrete blocks - made on the ground - lifted into position, then cement-rendered on both the inside and the outside.

This building technique eliminated the use of heavy scaffolding and shuttering which is necessary for the "concrete poured" construction of towers.

Most of the stores and materials for the new lighthouse were landed at Bindijine Wharf, constructed in 1898, on Honeymoon Bay inside the sheltered side of Jervis itself. They were then carted by house and cart to Point Perpendicular.

The original apparatus was vapourised kerosene, 100,000 cd with a range of 33 kilometres. The power was increased to 222,000 cd in 1909 and again to 316,000 in 1923. The light was converted to electric operation in 1964 with the installation of 2 diesel generators. When to light was finally replaced in 1993 the power was 1,200,000 cd.

The new "lattice" style tower is solar powered and the lightstation has been demanned.

There was much protest when the Department of Defence fenced off the area preventing public access to the lighthouse even though it had been agreed that access should continue. There have been mixed reports about what the current situation is though the restriction does seem to have been relaxed.

Also the keepers complex was put on the market at this time and it is also not known what the outcome has been.

The window above the main door is interesting as it displays the Waratah, the state flower of New South Wales, and the construction date of the tower.

The light was last lit by Ian Clifford on Saturday 17 November 1999 for the Seafarer's Festival Ball and to celebrate the centenary of Point Perpendicular.

The Point Arena Lighthouse stands tall and proud on the Northern California Mendocino Coast.

This lighthouse was built in 1908 to replace an earlier version after the original brick lighthouse was damaged beyond repair in the Great San Francisco Earthquake.

Constructed of reinforced concrete, this lighthouse was built by a company that specialized in smokestacks, which is why it looks like one.

At 115 feet tall, the Point Arena Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the U.S West Coast (tied with Pigeon Point)

Point Arena is the closest point to Hawaii on the U.S. mainland, which makes this as close as I will probably ever get to Hawaii.

Point Sur Lightstation is a lighthouse at Point Sur, California, 135 miles south of San Francisco, on the 361-foot tall rock at the head of the point. The light house is 40 feet tall and 270 feet above sea level. It was established in 1889. As of 2010, the light was still in operation as an aid to navigation.

The little one room school on the Harn Homestead.

This is what the sign said outside of the school

Education was a primary concern of the new Oklahomans and within six weeks of the land run, Oklahoma City boasted a school house. School buildings also served as churches, social centers, and polling places.

Stoney Point School was built in 1897 and located near present day Rose Hill Township. This "three window," one-room schoolhouse closed its doors to the last classes of all eight grades on July 16, 1947. The actual chalkboard, which was made of mud, plaster, and horse hair, can be seen in the schoolhouse today. The Stoney Point School was relocated to the Harn Homestead in 1987.

The West Point Lighthouse Inn is among the most recognizable places in the PEI Tourism environment.

The Inn was originally created in 1987 by the West Point Development Corporation (WPDC). In 2009 and after 20+ years in operation the WPDC undertook a project to redevelop their facilities and surrounding area in order to make West Point a leader in the Tourism industry in PEI.

This redevelopment concluded in 2010 with the expansion and complete renovations to the West Point Lighthouse Inn, the upgrading of the West Point Lighthouse Museum, the relocation of the restaurant to a newly created facility on the West Point Harbour and the integration of the facilities with uniform signage, a new boardwalk and a streetscape project.

This work has resulted in a beautiful destination for visitors of all ages.

The closest point to Hawaii from the Continental United States, Point Arena was a geographically important location for navigation. Hence in 1870 a brick-and-mortar lighthouse was built atop Point Arena. This was damaged beyond repair by the 1906 Great San Francisco Earthquake and for its replacement, the United States Lighthouse Service specified that it needed to withstand another earthquake. It eventually contracted with a San Francisco company specializing in smokestacks, accounting for its long, thin design. The 1908 Point Arena Lighthouse is thus the first lighthouse built of reinforced concrete.

The lighthouse is 35m tall, tied with the Pigeon Point Lighthouse as the tallest lighthouse on the Pacific Coast. It has a 1st Order Fresnel Lens, made up of 666 glass prisms focused toward three sets of double bullseyes, providing two flashes every six seconds. It was automated in 1977.
