Expired Film

Wanting to catch some of the early spring wildflowers, we made a trip over to Highlands Nature Sanctuary in April 2013 near Bainbridge, Ohio. This series of photos was taken along the Valley of the Ancients trail.

This was the first time I had seen wild Trout Lilies, so it was exciting to find such beauties in the woods.

I had planned to take the majority of these photos with my Canon 10D and 100mm f 2.8 lens, but I failed to take an extra battery along. The battery was very low when I arrived and didn't last long. So, some of these were taken with my Fujifilm FinePix Z20fd pocket camera, which I try to take everywhere I go so I am never without a camera.

Descriptions and a link below if interested ...

The Highlands Nature Sanctuary is 2,200-acre hiking and nature preserve in southern Ohio, located in the heart of the scenic Rocky Fork Gorge.

Valley of the Ancients Trail - A rock-lined trail curves down to the Rocky Fork Creek, winding through the bottom of a 100 foot high vertical dolomite gorge. Walk beneath towering hemlocks and rare white cedar trees of great antiquity, viewing the art of breathtaking panoramas sculpted from the elements of rock and water. 1/4 mile loop.

Continuing my series of flying insects, I'm posting seven shots from three summers ago when this butterfly decided to hang out on the siding of the house. It was not scared of me and did not fly away. Thanks to my new (FREE) Ohio Division of Wildlife field guide, "Butterflies & Skippers of Ohio", I have identified this as a Hackberry Emperor. I typed the description and information from the book below and have learned that they are curious about people. So, that's why I was allowed to have a photo session without scaring it.

Here's the information from the guide if you want to know more ...

Hackberry Emperor

Asterocampa celtis

Brushfoot Family (Nymphalidae)

Habitat: Wherever hackberry trees occur, which inclues stream bottom forests, mesic to dry woodlands, overgrown fields, and even residential areas.

Host Plants: Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis).

Discussion: Very active and pugnacious, hackberry emperors are noted for dashing out to investigate people, often alighting on them. They are drawn to white colors, and are fond of landing on white shirts and even the sides of buildings that are painted white. Although not brightly colored, the hackberry has one of the most beautiful patterns of any of our butterflies including the noticeable white antennae clubs. They are attracted to mud puddles, animal scat, rotten fruit, human perspiration, road tar and even oil drippings from your car. Hackberry emperors are seldom found away from areas where their larval host tree occurs. When found, they are usually plentiful. Interestingly, these butterflies often become more active toward dusk and have even been caught at light sources after dark. The hackberry has two broods each season and overwinters in the larval stage.

As I was waiting for the light to change, I pulled out my pocket camera to photograph the clouds of the tornado producing storm. The light had just turned green when I snapped this one.

The flock of birds in the sky was an added bonus to this early spring scene along a country road.

If you look at the larger view of the photo, you can see some of the early greens of the budding leaves on the trees along the hillside. Disregard the dirty spot on the windshield and the windshield wiper streaks. I shot it through the windshield.

When I did a batch upload earlier, this photo and the other went with it were separated. I am posting the other one in the comments section.

This is another shot from the summer of 2013. I have planted a number of seeds for the past few summers and only ever get one or two sunflowers to grow

Despite planting about 20 seeds this year, I only have one growing and it isn't going to bloom for a while.

Some old research material, shot for a customers web site layout.

I just snapped this picture with my little Continental pocket 110 camera at a reception my band played at. I didn't know the couple and I still don't know who it is, but it makes a good post when I'm looking for 110 images.

When I left to go exercise, I thought I should take a "good camera" with me. I was right.

Walking the path along Crooked Creek today, I heard all kinds of racket coming from two birds. When I finally spotted them, they seemed to be chasing each other back and forth above the creek. The sound they were making was short, sharp repeated chips at a machine-gun like pace.

Unfortunately, I only had my pocket point-and-shoot camera along, so these very poor shots were the best I could do. I'm only posting them in hopes that someone can help me identify what I saw.

I went home to get my Canon 7D Mark II and 100-400 lens, but when I returned, the birds were nowhere to be found. The consolation prize was getting some shots of Cedar Waxwings working on berries in the woods and a few butterflies.

This is one I did not add to the 365days pool, but I like it. I've never had blue hair, or eyelashes for that matter and I think it is kinda fun!
