This is the closest thing to autumn as I could find. It is not surprising because last Sunday we still went to the beach. Picture taken at Terrón Beach (Vilanova de Arousa). In the background is Arousa Island and at the left, between the trees, the access bridge.

The trees are London planetree, Platanus hybrida.

96 plane trees - Platanen.

The Tübingen public Park Avenue with 96 London plane trees (Platanenallee) is situated on a landscaped island in Neckar (Neckarinsel);

this Neckar island runs parallel to the city walls before the chocolate side of the old town. It begins at the Neckar bridge and ends on the Silcher Monument, where the path in the so-called "sigh grove" continues.

With its ancient, huge plane trees, the Avenue invites you to stroll, you can play boules there and has a great view over the Neckar. In summer you can sit there in the grass, watching the punting boats (Stocherkahn-Fahrten) and watching pigeons, swans, ducks and boat driver.

To back Neckar bridge, the "bottleneck", there is a dovecote, which is used for the purpose of organized theft eggs pigeons speed limit.

The yellow Hoelderlin tower (Hölderlin-Turm) is of her in the eastern part (the Neckar bridge out) well seen and photographed.

With nearly 200 years, the avenue is the oldest surviving this species in Germany - about the exact age of the avenue: see "Origin". (The old linden alley between the Wildermuth Gymnasium and the sports field SV 03 is in parts still significantly older, it was created already in 1508).

Avenue of plane trees giving much needed shade and rest.

Outside of automobiles, Parisians are not fond of air conditioning. I've only been here in Paris around fifty days and I'm already convinced that the good old American cool dark cave is a bit uncivilized.

Perhaps when I was a kid I fully appreciated a park bench in the shade but from my late teens on, air conditioning was where I went when it got hot.

I've long known the French word allée. We have some in New York City, the Poet's Walk in Central Park comes to mind. I never realized that on top of serving as a cooling center these linear patches of shade serve as places to get some exercise on a hot day.

This view is the Jardin des Plantes, just across the street from my non air conditioned apartment. On warm mornings exercise classes move from the sun drenched lawns to the shade below these trees. On hot afternoons families parade under the cooling London planetrees, but something tells me that the French probably have another name for Platanus × acerifolia. In late afternoon, while I sit there reading "A Movable Feast" the benches in the shade serve as social centers.

If I was home in New York on a hot day, instead of sitting and observing civilization, I'd be home in my cold dark living room watching and listening to some political pundit. Instead of conversation and exchange of ideas that pundit might be telling me about how "America never wants to become like France." Why not?

There are many newer buildings on the Berkeley campus, along with a rich collection of older ones, some dating to the 19th century.

This is Evans Hall, and it is apparently not loved on campus.

Canon F-1n and long expired (pre-1990) ORWO NP-7, I shot this film at 50 iso and developed it in homemade D23 replenished for 9 minutes.

This image showcases a magnificent Platanus tree (commonly known as a plane tree or sycamore) with its characteristic white bark and sprawling branches. The tree stands out prominently in a park or natural setting, illuminated by sunlight that accentuates its unique appearance. The remaining brown leaves add texture to the scene. The background features other trees with darker trunks and branches, set against an overcast sky with dramatic dark clouds. This contrast between the brightly lit Platanus tree and the moody sky creates a striking and captivating visual effect.
