I had a lovely morning outing along Melbourne's Birrarung Marr with the Famous Flickr Five + Group. Walking along the corniche by the Yarra River provides some beautiful views of the Melbourne central business district also known as "the grid" because the original Melbourne city was based on a grid of main streets, famous Southbank precinct and views east along the Yarra.

Birrarung Marr is an inner city park between the Melbourne central business district and the Yarra River. It was opened in 2002. The name "Birrarung Marr" means "river of mists" and "river bank" in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, the Indigenous inhabitants at the time of European settlement of the Melbourne area.

The finely made base is decorated with a relief of interwoven plane-tree branches surmounted by bucrania (ox skulls). The rectangular setting on the base's upper surface suggests that it was used as a plinth for a statue, perhaps of Hercules. In the area of its discovery, there was probably an open-air sanctuary dedicated to the hero, for whome the plane tree was sacred.

There are visible suggestions of degraded pigments, but I couldn't find whether any tests had been performed on this base (I doubt it).

The Diarizos Valley lies west to south west of the Troodos mountain range and takes its name from the river Diarizos which runs through it. This valley has a wide variety of fauna and flora, with a number of protected species.

Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.

Just living is not enough... one must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.

St Kilda Road is a grand, tree lined boulevard in Melbourne. Along with Swanston Street, it forms a major spine of the city.

St Kilda Road begins at Flinders Street, in the Melbourne central business district and crosses Princes Bridge, which spans the Yarra River and connects the central business district of Melbourne with the suburb of St Kilda, ending at Carlisle Street, St Kilda. The road continues as Brighton Road, which becomes Nepean Highway, forming a major arterial connecting the bayside suburbs and Mornington Peninsula to the city. Along its length run dozens of trams.

In the distance you can see Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance. Architecturally designed by Hudson & Wardrop between 1927 and 1934, the classically inspired building looks like an ancient Greek or Roman temple.

Sunset in London's Holland Park seen through some of the Park's many mature London Plane Trees.

I can't resist images of leafless trees against the sky, so when I saw this on the way to another location I took a quick couple of shots. This is a further lesson in the importance of allowing time for shots, when I came to look at it the lower part of the image was entirely black; I should have aimed higher and reduced the amount given over to the gardens that you can't see! I cropped this area out, which I dont like to do very much as it spoils the proportions on the image. However, I thought the rest of the photo captured the feel of a Winter sunset rather well.

Platanus occidentalis, also known as American sycamore, American planetree, western plane, occidental plane, buttonwood, and water beech, is a species of Platanus native to the eastern and central United States, the mountains of northeastern Mexico, extreme southern Ontario, and possibly extreme southern Quebec. It is usually called sycamore in North America, a name which can refer to other types of tree in other parts of the world.

An American sycamore tree can often be easily distinguished from other trees by its mottled bark which flakes off in great irregular masses, leaving the surface mottled and gray, greenish-white and brown. The bark of all trees has to yield to a growing trunk by stretching, splitting, or infilling. The sycamore shows the process more openly than many other trees. The explanation is found in the rigid texture of the bark tissue which lacks the elasticity of the bark of some other trees, so it is incapable of stretching to accommodate the growth of the wood underneath, so the tree sloughs it off.

This beautiful red mushroom grows on living trees.

It is almost transparent and very tiny, its height not exceeding two centimetres.

It grows specifically in a kind of maple trees, in some parts of their trunks where the dead leaves accumulate and where also other parasites grow.

Troodos is the largest mountain range in Cyprus, located in roughly the center of the island. Troodos' highest peak is Mount Olympus at 1,952 meters, which hosts four ski slopes. The Troodos mountain range stretches across most of the western side of Cyprus. There are many famous mountain resorts, Byzantine monasteries and churches on mountain peaks, and nestling in its valleys and picturesque mountains are villages clinging to terraced hill slopes. The area has been known since antiquity for its mines, which for centuries supplied copper to the entire Mediterranean. In the Byzantine period it became a great centre of Byzantine art, as churches and monasteries were built in the mountains, away from the threatened coastline.
